3. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

3.1 FUNCTIONS

The auxiliary steam system is designed to supply steam to the following consumers:

 The turbine seal steam system, to prevent steam leakage in the high pressure turbine
and entry of non-condensables into the intermediate and low pressure turbine.

 Sparging steam in order to warm-up the condensate in the Feedwater Tank.

 Pegging steam in order to maintain the pressure in the Deaerator during start-ups (keep
the pressure at a minimum value allowing the proper deaeration) and transients.

 ACC Steam Ejector for hogging operation.

 SGS Reheater (train 1 and train 2) in order to warm-up during a long term start-up.

3.2 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

3.2.1 General

Auxiliary steam is distributed to the Steam Turbine seal steam system, to the Feedwater tank
for warming-up, to the Deaerator for pegging purposes, to the ACC Steam ejector for hogging
operation and to the SGS Reheaters for equipment and lines warming-up. It has been
dimensioned to provide these services.

For Steam Turbine seals demand, steam is supplied from the auxiliary boiler line
(01QLB30BR001) (during plant start-ups, after a plant shutdown (if needed), or when the Hot
Reheat Steam supply is not available) and when it is needed only a pipe pre-warming steam
flow downstream the electrical heaters or an external seal steam feeding to the steam turbine),
from the Hot Reheat Sub-System (during normal operation or during long term start-up when
the Hot Reheat Steam pressure is high enough) and from the SGS kettles in night operation.

For Deaerator pegging or sparging, steam is supplied from the auxiliary boiler line
(01QLB30BR001) (during plant start-ups, after a plant shutdown (if needed) or from the Cold
Reheat Sub-System (after a plant trip).

For ACC steam ejector, steam is supplied from the auxiliary boiler line (01QLB30BR001)
(during plant start-ups).

For Reheaters steam is supplied from the auxiliary boiler line (01QLB30BR002) (during plant
start-ups).

Turbine Seal Steam System

During start-up, transients (like a steam turbine trip) and low load operation, the amount of
steam flowing through the gland seals is too small to maintain the desired pressure in the
sealing system. During these operating modes, the pressure must be maintained by supplying
external seal steam from the auxiliary steam system through the gland steam control valve
(Siemens scope).

During operation at higher loads, the steam turbine is self-sealing so the auxiliary steam is not
required.

The drain pot installed downstream the electrical heaters allows a small flow and having all
time the needed conditions for seal steam external feeding in case after a transient (like a
steam turbine trip) external seals were needed.

Condensate System

Auxiliary steam is supplied to the ACC steam ejector, during start-ups. Auxiliary steam line to
ACC Steam ejector (01QLB70BR001) is provided with one motor-operated valve
(01QLB70AA301) to isolate the steam ejector to the rest of consumers and a pressure reducing
station (01QLB70AA201), where the steam conditions are accommodated to those required
by the ACC steam ejector.

The auxiliary steam pipe downstream the pressure station is equipped with two pressure
transmitters (01QLB70CP101/102) for the control of the pressure reduction.

Drain pots are located in low points where needed, provided with pneumatic control valves to
evacuate the accumulated condensate by using two level switches installed inside the pot. The
drain pots just before and after the motorized valve 01QLB70AA301 are also equipped with
on-off pneumatic valves (01QLB71/72AA251) used during pipe pre-warming and it is provided
with two level switches (01QLB71/72CL301/302) installed inside the pot. The drains will be
routed to the Electrical Auxiliary boiler blowdown tank.

Deaerator

Auxiliary steam is supplied to the deaerator, prior to the start-up, for pre-heating purposes
(sparging steam), during start-up (minimum pressure to allow condensate deaeration) and
during transients or turbine trips to maintain the pressure (pegging steam). The auxiliary steam
line to deaerator (01QLB40BR001) is provided with one drain pot (01QLB41BR001) to allow
condensate evacuation. This drain pot is also equipped with an on-off pneumatic valve
(01QLB41AA251) used during pipe pre-warming and it is provided with two level switches
(01QLB41CL301/302) installed inside the pot. The drain will be routed to the Atmospheric drain
tank.

Reheaters

Auxiliary steam is supplied to the SGS reheaters in order to pre-heating the equipment and
lines during long term start-up. The auxiliary steam line to reheaters is provided with one drain
pot equipped with an on-off pneumatic valve (01QLB81AA251) and two level switches
(01QLB81CL301/302) installed inside the pot. The drain will be routed to the Intermittent
Blowdown tank.

3.3 INTERFACES

The interfaces of the system with other systems or related equipment are described below.
The interfaces are classified into those that are necessary for the system or operation (support
systems) and those that are supplied by the system and needed so that the other systems can
perform their function (dependent systems).

The systems that interface with the auxiliary steam piping system are the following:

3.3.1 SUPPORT SYSTEMS / EQUIPMENT

 Electrical Auxiliary boiler, supply steam during start-ups.

4. OPERATION MODES

The auxiliary steam system is comprised of four different steam sources, depending on their
availability and the respective consumers, as will be described in this section and summarized
in the following table.

ST Seals FW Tank-Deaerator ACC Ejectors SGS Reheaters

HRH CRH
SGS Kettles SGS Kettles Aux.Boiler Aux.Boiler
Aux.Boiler Aux.Boiler
*Priority: from top to bottom

4.1 NORMAL OPERATION

During normal operation, the auxiliary steam is fed by the hot reheat steam (HRH) for ST seals.
Motorized isolation valves from Auxiliary boiler and SGS lines (01QLB30AA301 and
01QLB50AA301/302) are closed.

The pressure in the auxiliary steam system for ST sealing system is controlled by pressure
control valve 01QLB10AA201 when the steam comes from HRH. All (except 01QLB63AA302)
auxiliary steam drain pot motorized valves are closed (if closed conditions are met).

4.2 START-UP

Long term start-up

Auxiliary steam consumers during a long term start-up are the seals, the ACC steam ejector,
the steam for deaerator (sparging steam) and the SGS reheaters (pre-heating the equipment
and lines).

Steam for deaerator is only needed during the beginning of the start-up until the steam coming
from the steam turbine is available (the extraction is open at very low loads), after that the
control valve (01LBQ56AA201) can be closed.

There is not hot reheat steam available with the conditions required in case of a long term
start-up. The steam will be supplied by the Auxiliary boiler, so that the motorized isolation valve
(01QLB30AA301) is opened. Auxiliary steam pressure control valves (01QLB10/20/50AA201)
are closed.

When the pressure in the HRH line (01LBB10CP101/102) is higher than the pressure in the
ST sealing steam line (measured with pressure transmitter 01QLB61CP101/102), auxiliary
steam pressure control valve (01QLB10AA201) will take over the pressure control of the
auxiliary steam to ST seals with the pressure transmitters 01QLB61CP101/102.

DESCRIPTION AUXILIARY STEAM SYSTEM 16 / 32
Rev. 6

The supply of steam to ACC steam ejector from auxiliary boiler is only used during hogging
mode.

Auxiliary steam is supplied to the SGS reheaters in order to pre-heating the equipment and
lines from auxiliary boiler.

Cold start-up

Auxiliary steam consumers during a cold start-up are the seals and the steam for deaerator
(sparging steam only needed during the beginning of the start-up until the steam coming from
the steam turbine is available (the extraction is open at very low loads)).

Please note that the steam turbine needs external sealing until a load over 25% and so when
hot reheat steam pressure was higher than the one existing in the auxiliary steam line to ST
seals, the required auxiliary steam would be from hot reheat steam.

All auxiliary steam drain pot pneumatic on-off valves are open (if open conditions are met).
The valve 01QLB63AA301 will be open, whereas the valve 01QLB63AA302 is closed. Pipe
pre-warming is assured by the automatic control valves installed in the drain pots.

4.3 SHUTDOWN

During the steam turbine shutdown at night the external seals required by the steam turbine
seal steam system are provided by the SGS kettles, being the motorized isolation valve
01QLB50AA301/302 open.

When there is not more auxiliary steam demand (this means when pressure values in the lines
01QLB10/20/30/60CP001 are below a certain value), the auxiliary steam system will be shut
down. Auxiliary steam pressure control valves (01QLB10/20/50/60AA201) will be closed.

All auxiliary steam drain pot pneumatic on-off valves are closed (if closed conditions are met).
The valves 01QLB63AA301/302 are closed.

The motorized valves 01QLB10AA301, 01QLB20AA301, 01QLB30AA301 and

01QLB50AA301/302 are closed.

All the actions mentioned above will be carried out automatically.

4.4 EMERGENCIES AND TRANSIENTS

During steam turbine trip, auxiliary steam to deaerator is fed by the cold reheat steam (CRH)
for pegging purposes.

Several events can alter the normal operation of the system, the most relevant ones are listed
below:

4.4.1 Emergencies

 Failure in the operation of motor-operated valves.

 Failure in the operation of regulation control valves and on-off pneumatic operated
valves.

 Low pressure in auxiliary steam supply lines

 High pressure in auxiliary steam supply lines.

 High temperature in auxiliary steam supply lines.

 Low temperature in auxiliary steam supply lines.

 Low temperature in pipe feeding the steam turbine seal steam system downstream the
electrical heaters.

 High level in the drain pots controlled by level.

 Low temperature in the drain pots controlled by temperature.

 Electrical heater malfunction.

 Auxiliary Boiler Malfunction

The actions related to each of above mentioned emergencies will be developed in the
Operating and Maintenance Manual of the system, to be developed during de detailed
engineering phase.

4.4.2 Transients

Transfer to Hot Reheat Steam supply

During start-ups (see point 4.2 above), the auxiliary steam required is supplied from the
Auxiliary boiler. In this scenario, the motor-operated valve (01QLB30AA301) of the steam line
from the Auxiliary boiler outlet line are open to allow the supply of auxiliary steam to ST seal
system, ejector and deaerator.

When the pressure in the hot reheat subsystem (01LBB10CP101/102) reaches the transfer
pressure values (pressure in the HRH higher than pressure measured in the auxiliary steam

ST seals lines) (see point 4.2 above), the HRH motor-operated isolation valve
(01QLB10AA301) opens and the HRH pressure control valve (01QLB10AA201) starts to
regulate the pressure in the ST seals lines and the Auxiliary steam header to seal steam
pressure control valve (01QLB60AA201) will be closed gradually.

Transfer to SGS Kettles Steam supply

During normal operation, the auxiliary steam required is supplied from hot reheat steam. In this
scenario, the motor-operated valve 01QLB10AA301 from the hot reheat steam to the ST seals
is opened to allow the supply of auxiliary steam, after being properly conditioned by the
pressure control valve 01QLB10AA201.

The auxiliary steam from SGS kettles will be in operation only during cold shutdown mode
when the SGS steam side is bottled and steam from SGS kettles will be used for keeping the
deaerator warm and for ST seals (as long as vacuum conditions are required to be maintained).

When the pressure in the SGS kettles to deaerator pressure (01QLB30CP101/102) is higher
than a predefined pressure, Auxiliary steam header to seal steam pressure control valve
(01QLB60AA201) will start to regulate the pressure in the ST seals lines and the HRH to seal
steam pressure control valve (01QLB10AA201) will be closed gradually.

Transfer to Cold Reheat Steam supply

During ST trip, the auxiliary steam required by deaerator is supplied from the CRH. In this
scenario, the motor-operated valve (01QLB20AA301) is open and the CRH pressure control
valve (01QLB20AA201) starts to regulate the pressure in the CRH lines and the Auxiliary
steam header to allow the supply of auxiliary steam to deaerator.

5. INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL

5.1 INSTRUMENTATION

The system instrumentation is depicted in the Auxiliary Steam System P&ID (RDST-00-QLB-
MDD-EAI-13300).

5.2 CONTROL GENERAL CRITERIA

Control general criteria are defined in referenced document RDST-00-YY_-YSK-EAI-00601-

Typical Control Diagrams Description.

5.3 SYSTEM CONTROL

Details about system control, protections, interlocks and automatic actions will be depicted in
the corresponding system control diagram (doc. Control Diagrams. Auxiliary Steam System
(RDST-00-QLB-YSK-EAI-13300).

From the point of view of control, the system is mainly formed by one (1) functional group (FG)
that will control two (2) redundant seal steam electrical heater functional subgroups (FSG)
through a selector of two actuators. Besides that, the functional group will actuate on the
system pneumatic and motorized valves by putting them in automatic. By means of this
actuation, regulation valves constantly monitor their respective process variables and on/off
valves suitably open/close to accomplish their functionality.

The different controls developed for the system are defined below.

5.3.1 Auxiliary Steam Functional Group (01QLB01EA001)

The different controls developed for the system are defined below.

When the system is started up via its FG or from a command coming from a higher hierarchical
level, the following actions will be carried out automatically:

 All drives controlled by the functional group shall be switched to automatic control mode

 The seal steam electrical heater FSG selector (01QLB60EA021) shall start the seal
steam electrical heater FSG selected as main by the operator once any of the three
auxiliary steam sources are open.

The following start-up permissives shall be programmed for the group to ensure that the
functional group only starts up whenever it can achieve its goal in all safety for the equipment
and its dependent systems:

 At least one seal steam electrical heater FSG (01QLB61/62EA011) are available. The
FSG is available if all associated components are available.

 Auxiliary boiler (01QHA30AC001) available.

 Auxiliary boiler isolation valve (01QLB30AA301) available.

 Aux Steam from SGS kettles isolation valves (01QLB50AA301/302) and pressure
control valve (01QLB50AA201) available AND pressure measurements downstream
the valve in good quality.

 Auxiliary steam header to Seal steam pressure control valve (01QLB60AA201) AND
pressure measurements downstream the valve in good quality.

 HRH to Seal steam isolation valves (01QLB10AA301) and pressure control valve
(01QLB10AA201) available AND pressure measurements downstream the valve in
good quality.

 CRH to Deareator pressure control valve (01QLB20AA201) available and pressure

measurements downstream the valve in good quality.

The functional group will always have a stop permissive.

The shutdown of the FG no specific action is taken directly into any associated valve. When
the process conditions are met, the valves close automatically.

All the group actuations shall remain on automatic control unless the operator expressly
actuates otherwise.

KKS tags and detailed description of the elements controlled by FG are defined in RDST-00-
QLB-YSK-EAI-13300 CONTROL DIAGRAMS AUXILIARY STEAM SYSTEM, sheet 3
“Hierarchical Control Structure”.

5.3.2 Seal Steam Electrical Heater Functional Subgroup (01QLB61/62EA011)

The FSG shall manage the operation of the seal steam electrical heater and it associated inlet
valve.

In order to start up safely the seal steam electrical heater FSG independently of the control
mode selected, the following start-up permissives must be complied with:

 Seal steam electrical heater available.

 Seal steam electrical heater isolation valve available.

Once the FSG is started manually by plant operator or automatically by FSG selector, its
associated equipment is set to AUTO control mode to react properly to FSG selector orders.

The FSG shall be forced to stop (pulsed command) when the associated electrical heater is
tripped.

5.3.3 Seal Steam Electrical Heater (01QLB61/62AC011)

The function of the seal steam electrical heaters (2x100%) (01QLB61/62AC001) is to assure
that the steam sent to the steam turbine seal steam system is superheated enough with the
conditions required by the steam turbine supplier.

To start-up the heater it is required the fulfillment of the following clauses:

 Any start permissive defined by electrical heater Supplier.

 Seal steam electrical isolation valve (01QLB61/62AA301) open

 Seal steam flow (01QLB60CF101/102) higher than the minimum flow required for Seal
Steam Electrical Heater operation (to be defined in Supplier documentation).

The electrical heater local controller shall perform the seal steam temperature control and the
electrical heater protection (see Supplier documentation for details).

5.3.4 Seal Steam Electrical Isolation Valve (01QLB61/62AA301)

The function of this valve is to facilitate the changeover manoeuvre between the two electric
heaters.

The valve will automatically open when the seal steam electrical heater FSG
(01QLB61/62EA011) is ON.

The valve will automatically close when the seal steam electrical heater FSG
(01QLB61/62EA011) is OFF.

The valve 01QLB61AA301 is then interlocked with the valve 01QLB62AA301, so that when
valve 01QLB61AA301 is closed, valve 01QLB62AA301 opens to assure a minimum auxiliary
steam warming flow within the seal steam header.

Each motorized valve contains a mini bypass valve to eliminate the possible thermal shock.

(01HA_01/02EA001) and when the Auxiliary Boiler source is required. It will close when the
SGS start-up sequence does not need the auxiliary steam to heat up the Reheaters or when
the Auxiliary Boiler source is not required. This will happen once the cold molten salts are
circulating through the SGS.

The valve will be force to close if the T1/T2: Reheater Inlet Temperature
(01LBC50/60CT101/102) gradient is over 10ºC/min.

5.3.8 Auxiliary Boiler to Reheaters Drain Pot Valve (01QLB81AA251)

5.3.11 Auxiliary Boiler to Ejector Valve (01QLB70AA301)

The function of this valve is to supply steam to ejectors for hogging operation.

To accomplish its function, it shall continuously monitor the auxiliary steam line pressure
(01QLB30CP001) and temperature (01QLB30CT001). It shall move automatically as follows:

The valve shall open when ejector operation is required (Hogging mode starts) from the ACC
AND the pressure (01QLB30CP001) and temperature (01QLB30CT001) in the auxiliary line is
higher than the required value AND the Auxiliary Boiler Isolation Valve (01QLB30AA301) is
open.

The valve shall close when the vacuum for hogging operation is completed (01MAG10EA001).

5.3.12 Auxiliary Boiler to Ejector Control Valve (01QLB70AA201)

This valve regulate the pressure downstream it to the value required by the Ejector (setpoint
of the PID loop).

To do this, it shall use as process variable the output value from the block of the two redundant
pressure measurements (01QLB70CP101/102) downstream the valves, which shall be
programmed in the control system.

Control shall be done through an inverse PID loop that shall continuously compare the process
variable with the established setpoint. If this variable is greater than the setpoint, the valve will
tend to close, reducing the steam outlet pressure. Otherwise, the valve will tend to open.

The valve shall be forced to closed in the following cases:

 Discharge steam pressure (01QLB70CP101/102) is very high.

 Auxiliary Boiler to Ejector Valve (01QLB70AA301) closed.

5.3.13 Ejector Drain Pot QLB72 Valve (01QLB72AA251)

The function of this valve is to assure that there is no ingress of water into the auxiliary steam
header upstream the ejector.

The drain pot valve is open during start up. When the Auxiliary Boiler Outlet Pressure
(01QLB70CP101/102) is over a certain value, the Drain Pot valve will be controlled by the
condensate level switches (01QLB72CL301/302) measured in the pot.

5.3.30 Steam Turbine Seal Steam Pot Drain Valves (01QLB63AA301/302)

The function of these valves is to assure that seal steam has the superheating grade required
by the steam turbine seal steam system prior to be admitted to the Steam turbine seal steam
system.

During start-up, the valve 01QLB63AA301 shall be opening (through intermediate positions)
until the ST Seal Steam Drain Pot Temp is over a certain value (01QLB63CT001), then
01QLB63AA301 will close and 01QLB63AA302 will open.

When the pressure (01QLB61CP001) in the Seal header is over High Pressure, valve has
been open for a defined time, and the seal steam Electrical heater FSG in operation
(01QLB61/62EA011), the Seal steam drain pot valve change to Drain pot temperature
controller.

After, the 01QLB63AA302 will be controlled by the ST Seal Steam Drain Pot Temp
(01QLB63CT001), the valve will open and close as the following indications:

 close if the Seal Steam Drain Pot Temp (01QLB63CT001) is higher than a certain value
AND if the Seal Steam Flow (01QLB60CF101/102) is higher than a certain value

 open if the Seal Steam Drain Pot Temp (01QLB63CT001) is lower than a certain value
OR if the Seal Steam Flow (01QLB60CF101/102) is lower than a certain value.

The function of this valve (01QLB63AA302) related with the flow is to maintain the minimum
steam flow (01QLB60CF101/102) from the auxiliary steam line to the sealing system.

5.3.31 Deaerator pressure control valve (01LBQ56AA201)

This valve regulate the pressure downstream it to the value required by the deaerator pressure
