Intoruction IntlTrade Policy LectureNote Ch01
Disadvantages of Globalization
1. An economic downturn in one country can create a domino effect through its trade
partners.
2. Globalization has created a concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a small
corporate elite that can gobble up smaller competitors around the globe. Only the first
can survive.
3. Globalization has become a polarizing issue in many countries with the disappearance of
entire industries to new locations abroad, and the economic squeeze on the low-income
or low-skill class.
4. Globalization has also increased homogenization around the world. Starbucks, Nike,
and McDonalds dominate commercial space in many nations. Fear of losing cultural
diversities.
On April 14, 2010, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland roared to life after being dormant for
more than two centuries.
An event like this has dramatic consequences for international trade, the movement of goods
and services across borders.
Roughly 100,000 flights to and from Northern Europe were cancelled, and billions of dollars in air
freight and millions of travelers were delayed, cancelled, or re-routed.
Countries buy and sell goods and services from one another constantly. Korea, for example,
imports all of her crude oil and natural gas supplies. Also 80% of all grain consumptions except
rice.
An export is a product sold from one country to another. Produced in home country, but
consumed in foreign country.
An import is a product bought by one country from another. Produced in foreign country, but
consumed in home country.
A country’s trade balance is the difference between its total value of exports and its total value of
imports (usually including both goods and services).
Countries that export more than they import, such as China in recent years, run a trade surplus,
whereas countries that import more than they export, such as the United States, run a trade
deficit.
The bilateral trade balance is the difference of exports and imports between two countries
Neoliberalism is the 20th century resurgence of 19th century ideas associated with economic
liberalism and free-market capitalism. It is generally associated with policies of economic
liberalization, including privatization, deregulation, globalization, free trade and reductions in
government spending in order to increase the role of the private sector in the economy and
society.
Politicians and policy-makers such as Margaret Thatcher who became British Prime Minister 1979,
and Ronald Reagan who became U.S President 1981 are strong supporters of Neoliberalism to
boost economy.
Even new Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping initiated the historic “Reform and Opening-up of
China("改革开放")”, designated special economic zones including Shenzen 1978.
All these incidents coincidentally happened late 1970s through early 1980s marked the beginning
of free trade increases and economic growth of U.S.A., U.K, and People’s Republic of China.
Trade statistics show that volume of international trade burgeons since late 1970s until today.
The timing of China’s getting into world market was perfect. It could not be better than this.
