Design thebraced circular column of diameter 400mm with helical

reinforcement subjected to a working load of 1200KN. The column has
unsupported length of 3m and is effectively held in position at both ends but not
restrained against rotation. Assume M25 concrete and Fe415 steels. Adopt limit
state method. (N/D 2014)(M/J 2014)(Nov/Dec 2015,16)
(13)
Solution:-
i) Given data:-
Unsupported length of column, L0 = 3m.
For the condition the column is effectively held in position at both ends but not
restrained against rotation = Leff = 1.0; L0 = 3.0m.
Diameter of column, D= 400mm.
f ck = 20N / mm2 , f y = 415N / mm2

Axial working load = 1200KN.

Factored load = 1.5 x 1200 = 1800KN.
ii) Slenderness ratio
Leff 3000
= = 7.5
D 400
As the slenderness ratio < 12, the column is designed as a short column.
(8)
iii) Minimum eccentricity
L D 3000 400
emin = + = + = 19.33mm  20mm
500 30 500 30
And 0.05D = 0.05 x 400 = 20 mm.
iv) Main reinforcement
We know
( Pu ) helical = 1.05 ( Pu ) tie
0.4 f ck Ag + (0.67 f y − 0.4 f ck ) Asc 
( Pu ) helical = 1.05 
 
 1800  10 3   0.4  25    400 2  
  =   + (0.67  415 − 0.4  25) Asc 
 1.05   4  
1714.3  10 6 = 1256000 + 268.05 Asc

458000
Asc = = 1708.6mm 2
268.05
Asc (minimum) = 0.8% of cross section
  4002
= 0.008  = 1004.8mm2
4
Hence the calculated Asc (1708.6mm2) is more than the minimum
Provide 6 bars of 20mm diameter (Asc = 1884 mm2)
v) Helical reinforcement:-
Adopting a clear cover of 50 mm over spirals
Core diameter = (400-(2 x 50)) = 300mm.
Assuming 8 mm dia. Bars are to be used the pitch.
11.1  a  Dk f y
S=
( D 2 − Dk ) f ck

  82
a= = 50.24mm 2

11.1  50.24  300  415

S= = 39.8 cm.
( 400 2 − 300 2 )25
Hence provide 8 mm diameter helical spiral at a pitch of 30mm.
