Ι. Εισαγωγή
Με την χάρη του Θεού, ύστερα από τις δια-
κοπές του καλοκαιριού, ξαναρχίζουμε και
πάλι τις συναντήσεις μας. Όλοι σας είσαστε
ένα χρόνο μεγαλύτεροι από πέρυσι και σί-
γουρα θα βρείτε όλα τα μαθήματα ακόμα πιο
ενδιαφέροντα. Σήμερα θα αρχίσουμε με ένα
πολύ σημαντικό μάθημα που ενδιαφέρει κάθε
άνθρωπο που θέλει να επιτύχει στην ζωή
του. Ας αρχίσουμε με μια ιστορία.
Παιδιά, βλέπουμε πως ήταν αδύνατο για τον
Πέτρο να νικήσει στον αγώνα του γιατί δεν
είχε κάνει την κατάλληλη εξάσκηση για να
πετύχει. Είχε πάρει τον εύκολο δρόμο και
είχε γίνει τεμπέλης, κάνοντας ό,τι του άρεσε
αλλά όχι αυτό που χρειαζόταν. Ακριβώς το
ίδιο συμβαίνει πολλές φορές και στο πνευμα-
τικό μας αγώνα.
ΙΙ. Αγιογραφική Μελέτη
Προσέξτε παιδιά να δείτε τι μας συμβουλεύει
ο Κύριος για την πορεία μας στην ζωή.
«Εισέλθετε δια της στενής πύλης ότι πλα-
τεία η πύλη και ευρύχωρος η οδός η απά-
γουσα (which leads) εις την απώλειαν και
πολλοί εισίν οι εισερχόμενοι δι’ αυτής, ότι
στενή η πύλη και τεθλιμμένη η οδός η απά-
γουσα εις την ζωήν, και ολίγοι εισίν οι ευ-
ρίσκοντες αυτήν» (Ματθ. ζ' 13-14).
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the
gate and broad is the way that leads to de-
struction, and there are many who go in by
it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult
is the way which leads to life, and there
are few who find it” (Matthew 7, 13-14).
Ι. Introduction
School holidays have now finished and, with
God's grace, we are here to start the Sun-
day School year. You are all older than you
were last year and will surely find the les-
sons even more challenging and of greater
interest.
We will start with a lesson which should be
of interest to every person who wishes to
succeed in life. Let's start with a short sto-
ry. The sound of the starter’s gun echoed
around the swim centre. The Boys under 15’s
Final of the 200 m freestyle was under way.
As Peter jumped in, the cheers of the
crowd became buried under the watery
swish of his arms scything through the wa-
ter interspersed with the steady rhythm of
his breathing. He had been most surprised
of all when he had qualified last for the fi-
nal, but he knew could win this comfortably.
After all he had won this event for the last
3 years. That is why it came as a shock to
him to find himself trailing the pack by the
1st turn. He increased his stroke rate to
catch up. Maybe his start had been off a
touch. By the 2nd turn he knew this year
would be different from the previous ones.
A mixed feeling of panic and embarrassed
pride wrapped itself around his chest. He
dug into his reserves. By the 3rd turn he
was in second last position. He could never
win from here but at least he would place.
Wouldn’t he?

Ποθείτε να φθάσετε την αληθινή ζωή;
Προσέξτε τότε μην γελαστείτε και πάρετε
τον δρόμο τον στραβό. Μην παρασυρθείτε
και μπείτε από την πλατειά και εύκολη πύ-
λη της αμαρτίας, που βλέπετε να μπαίνουν
πολλοί. Προσοχή! Κίνδυνος!
«Εισέλθετε δια της στενής πύλης». Ακο-
λουθήστε τον δρόμο της αρετής που χά-
ραξα εγώ, μας λέει ο Χριστός. Έχει εμπό-
δια, έχει δυσκολίες και ανηφοριές, όμως
οδηγεί εκεί που ποθείτε, στην αληθινή
ζωή, στην αιώνια ζωή, κοντά στον Χρι-
στό.
ΙΙΙ. Ανάπτυξη
Αν ρίχναμε μια ματιά στον «δρόμο τον
πλατύ» της εποχής μας. θα βλέπαμε
σπορτ αυτοκίνητα και πολυτελή κέντρα,
θα ακούγαμε ξεφαντώματα και θα βλέπα-
με υποκρισία και πονηριά.
Αν κοιτούσαμε όμως στον «δρόμο τον
στενό» θα βλέπαμε σεμνές και ηρωικές
μορφές, αγίους, κοινωνικούς εργάτες,
αφοσιωμένες μητέρες και πολλούς
άλλους. Και στα μάτια τους θα βλέπαμε
να ακτινοβολεί η ειρήνη και η αγάπη.
Τι είναι άραγε αυτό που σπρώχνει τους
πολλούς να ακολουθούν τον εύκολο δρό-
μο;

Allow the children to express in their
own words what makes most people
fall into the easy way of life.
Το ότι στην αρχή φαίνεται άνετος, εύκο-
λος, δεν έχει απαγορεύσεις. Κάνουμε ότι
θέλουμε και ζούμε όπως θέλουμε. Μας
θυμίζει λίγο την παραβολή του Ασώτου.
Τι είναι αυτό που κάνει τον δρόμο της αρε-
τής δύσβατο;
Συζήτηση / Discussion
Again allow the children to express
their thoughts on this and summarise
them using the following 3 points.
As he touched the wall to finish last, the
words of his coach bore into his head:
“You’ll never win the way you’ve been train-
ing.” He thought of the countless times in
the past 3 months the alarm had gone off
and he’d just kept pressing the snooze but-
ton. He thought of the hours wasted in
front of the Xbox on the weekends, when
he should’ve been pushing out laps at the
pool. He remembered all those late nights
he had stayed up watching movies with his
friends. He thought of the treadmill in his
room, which was gathering dust, how it had
become a useful place to toss his clothes
onto. He hauled himself out of the pool and
with head bowed down, trudged to the
showers.
As you heard, it was impossible for Peter to
succeed without the necessary training. He
was lazy and took the easy route. He pre-
ferred to do what he liked instead of what
was required to win. Exactly the same thing
can take place in our spiritual struggle.
ΙΙ. Bible Study
Listen to what Christ said about how we
should journey through life.
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the
gate and broad is the way that leads to de-
struction, and there are many who go in by
it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult
is the way which leads to life, and there are
few who find it” (Matthew 7: 13-14).
Do you wish to follow a true/genuine life?
Be careful that you are not fooled into tak-
ing the wrong road. Do not allow yourself to
be led astray, to follow the wide road
through the easy gates of sin. You will see
many people choose that path. Beware of
the danger!
"Enter by the narrow gate". Christ tells us
to follow the road of virtue which He him-
self chose. Yes, there are obstacles on this
road, ups and downs, yet it leads to that
which is desired, true life, eternal life close
to Christ.
α) Ο Εαυτός μας. Έχουμε όλη μας την ροπή
προς την αμαρτία. Σαν την μπάλα, που μόλις
βρίσκει κατηφόρα κατρακυλά με ταχύτητα
προς τα χαμηλά, έτσι είναι και η καρδιά μας.
Ευκολότερα γλιστράει στην πλεονεξία στον θυ-
μό, στο ψέμα και στην αμαρτωλή ζωή.
β) Ο Κόσμος. Οι αντιλήψεις και τα φρονήματα
αυτού του κόσμου θέλουν να μας πείσουν
πως η ζωή αρχίζει και τελειώνει εδώ. Ότι
όλη η χαρά που μπορεί να φανταστεί κανείς
υπάρχει στη ζωή της ηδονής, της καλοφαγίας
και της καλοπέρασης. Υπάρχουν και οι βλα-
βερές επιδράσεις των δήθεν φίλων μας που
όλο μας σπρώχνουν στην αμαρτία.
γ) Ο Πονηρός. Ο Απόστολος Πέτρος για να
δείξει το πείσμα του διαβόλου και το άγριο μί-
σος του γράφει στην Επιστολή του πως «ως
λέων ωρυόμενος περιπατεί ζητών τίνα καταπί-
η» (Α’ Καθολ. Επιστ. Πέτρου ε’ 8). Αυτό
σημαίνει πως δεν παρουσιάζεται ποτέ ο ίδιος
μπροστά μας να μας δώσει γνωριμία. Η τέχνη
του είναι να κάνει την δουλειά του κρυφά, να
καμουφλάρεται, να μην αφήνει ίχνη. Γνωρίζει
τις αδυναμίες μας και έρχεται να μας σπρώξει
στον δρόμο τον κακό. Όλα αυτά κάνουν την
αρχή κάπως δύσκολο στον δρόμο της αρετής,
αλλά αυτό δεν πρέπει να μας ανησυχεί γιατί
μας βοηθάει και μας ενισχύει ο Κύριος. Κάθε
βήμα στον δρόμο τον στενό μας οδηγεί στην
χαρά, στην αγάπη και στην αληθινή ζωή.
IV. Εφαρμογή
Για να επιτύχουμε στον δρόμο της στενής
πύλης χρειάζεται να κάνουμε μεγάλη προ-
σπάθεια. Αλλά ας εξετάσουμε μερικά πρακτι-
κά παραδείγματα που δίνουν όσοι αγωνίζο-
νται στον πνευματικό αγώνα.
Άσκηση (Focus word)
Η Μητέρα μας η Εκκλησία, μας έχει δώσει τό-
σους τρόπους να μας βοηθήσουν στον πνευμα-
τικό μας αγώνα. Η νηστεία, η ελεημοσύνη και η
προσευχή είναι πρακτικοί τρόποι να προοδεύ-
σουμε στον πνευματικό αγώνα.
III. Discussion
If we cast our eyes over the wide road for a
moment we would probably see sports cars,
luxurious night clubs, hear the sounds of
loud parties but also witness hypocrisy and
evil.
On the other hand, if we cast our eyes over
the narrow road, we would probably see
modesty, heroes, saints, community work-
ers, dedicated mothers and many other
righteous people. In their eyes we would be
able to see true peace and love.
What is it that makes the majority of peo-
ple choose the easy way, the wide road?
[Allow the children to express in their own
words what makes most people fall into the
easy way of life.]
Maybe it is because at the start it appears
comfortable and easier. There are no rules
and nothing appears to be forbidden. We do
as we like and live self-indulgent lives. This
way of life brings to mind the parable of
the prodigal son.
What is it which makes the road of virtue
so difficult?
[Again allow the children to express their
thoughts on this and summarise them using
the following 3 points.]
A) Ourselves. We all have a tendency to
sin. Just like a ball accelerates more and
more as it rolls down a hill, so too our hearts
can slip towards every excess. Becoming an-
gry, lying easily and living in sin all take off
and we find it hard to apply the brakes.
B) The World. The ideas and mindset of
the world are designed to convince us that
life starts and ends here on earth. It tries
to convince us that all pleasures that we
could ever imagine can be found in this life.
In other words, hedonism, eating well and
passing our time in pleasure are the only
things that matter. The harmful influences
of so-called friends can also be catastrophic
to our souls.

Η νηστεία, (όχι μόνο απ’το φαγητό αλλά
και από ότι μας αρέσει) μας αφήνει να
σκεφτούμε πιό εύκολα για το Θεό και λι-
γότερα εγωιστικά.
Η ελεημοσύνη μας διδάσκει λίγο για θυσία,
να δίνουμε κάτι δικό μας στους άλλους.
Δεν χρειάζεται να είναι αποκλειστικά χρη-
ματική βοήθεια μπορεί να είναι φαγητό, ή
ένα παιχνίδι που μας αρέσει.
Η προσευχή συγκεντρώνει όλο το είναι
μας στην πιο σημαντική πράξη που υπάρ-
χει : Να δοξολογούμε τον Θεό. Τίποτα
άλλο σε αυτό το κόσμο έχει την ίδια αξία.
Ενθουσιασμός και αγάπη στον Χριστό
Εκτός από την άσκηση της θελήσεως,
χρειάζεται κάποιος να ποθεί μια ανώτερη
ζωή, να έχει αληθινή αγάπη για τον
Χριστό.
Αυτό έκαναν οι άγιοι που αγάπησαν με
όλη την ψυχή τους τον Κύριο και
«βάδισαν τον στενό δρόμο μέχρι τέ-
λους», π.χ. ο Άγιος Γεώργιος, η Αγία
Βαρβάρα και τόσοι άλλοι που θυσίασαν
πλούτη, ομορφιά, δόξα και ακόμη και
την ίδια την ζωή τους.
Επιμονή και Υπομονή
Συνήθως πολλοί άνθρωποι ενθουσιάζονται
εύκολα, αλλά δεν προχωρούν σταθερά στις
προσπάθειές τους μέχρι τέλους. Όταν συ-
ναντούν δυσκολίες, ανυπομονούν, εκνευρί-
ζονται και τα θέλουν όλα αμέσως. Αυτή η
έλλειψη αντοχής κάνει πολλούς νέους να
αρχίζουν καλά, αλλά να μένουν όμως στα
μισά του δρόμου της αρετής. Για να το κα-
ταφέρουμε αυτό χρειαζόμαστε να σπρώ-
χνουμε τον εαυτό μας ή να έχουμε κάτι που
μας ενθαρρύνει.
3) The Devil. To illustrate how stubborn and
how full of wild anger the devil is, Apostle
Peter writes in his epistle "the devil walks
like a roaring lion seeking whom it may de-
vour" (Peter 5:8). This means that he never
appears to us as he actually is. He does his
work in secret, in camouflage so that he can
never leave footsteps.
The devil knows our weaknesses and he
comes to push us onto the road of wicked-
ness. This makes the journey on the path of
virtue more difficult but this shouldn't
trouble us as we have Christ by our side
helping us at every step. Every step on the
narrow path leads us to joy, love and true
life.
IV. Application
In order to succeed on the path of the nar-
row gate, we need to put in great efforts.
We should examine what is needed from a
practical perspective.
A) Asceticism. Our mother church has giv-
en us so many methods with which to fight
the spiritual struggle. Fasting, almsgiving
and prayer are practical ways to advance
spiritually.
Fasting (not just from food but from every-
thing we enjoy) helps us to think more about
God and less about ourselves.
Almsgiving teaches us how to sacrifice. Sac-
rifices can be internal and external. We
need to cultivate within ourselves a spirit of
sacrifice. Our almsgiving does not have to
always involve money. It can be something
like volunteering our time to help others.
Prayer is the means by which we can do the
most important thing in our lives - glorify
God. Nothing in the world can match that.
There is nothing more precious on earth
than to be able to communicate with God.
B) Enthusiasm and Love for Christ. Apart
from reigning in our will, one also needs to
have a yearning for a more perfect life clos-
er to God. One requires a true love for
Christ to progress spiritually.
This is what the saints achieved. They loved
God with all their bodies and souls and
"walked the narrow path until the end of
their earthy lives". Look at the lives of St
George and St Barbara for example. They
sacrificed riches, beauty, glory and, in the
end, their very lives for the love of God.
C) Persistence and Patience.

It is easy for people to get enthusiastic but to maintain it to the end is difficult. When
they encounter difficulties, they lose patience or get frustrated. People often seek re-
sults immediately. This lack of patience causes many to start well but to soon fall off the
narrow path. In order to overcome this, we need to push ourselves to turn to something
for encouragement.
One practical method is to have appropriate, encouraging quotes written down somewhere
helpful. Apostle Paul says "I can achieve anything when Christ strengthens me".
It is also very important to read the Bible regularly, to go to confession, and to frequently
partake in Holy Communion. These will all help us to stay on the narrow path, on the path of
virtue which leads to the heavenly kingdom.
What conclusion can be drawn from everything we have discussed today?

V. Conclusion
Your presence here today at the new year's first Sunday School lesson shows that you
have already chosen the correct road. But, as we discussed, it is not enough to simply make
a good start. There are too many hurdles which could cause us to fall and take the other
path. On your journeys you will encounter all sorts of difficulties. Your friends may laugh
at you tease you telling you not to go to Church or Sunday School. Don't pay attention to
them. If you wish to succeed in life, remember always that you must pass through the nar-
row gate.

Focus Word: Ascesis (Άσκησις) is the interior combat necessary in order that the spiritual
acquire a mastery over the material. (Paul Evdokimov – The Struggle with God).

Ένα πρακτικό παράδειγμα θα είναι να
έχουμε κατάλληλα συνθήματα γραμμένα σε
χαρτί όπως λόγια από την Αγία Γραφή. Ο
Απόστολος Παύλος μας λέει – «πάντα ι-
σχύω εν τω ενδυναμούντι με Χριστώ», δη-
λαδή όλα τα κατορθώνω όταν με δυναμώνει
ο Χριστός
Εκτός από αυτά πρέπει να διαβάζουμε την
Αγία Γραφή, να εξομολογούμαστε και να
κοινωνούμε. Αυτά θα μας βοηθήσουν να
μένουμε πάντα στον δρόμο τον στενό, τον
δρόμο της αρετής, τον δρόμο που οδηγεί
στην Ουράνια Βασιλεία.
Ποιο συμπέρασμα μπορούμε να βγάλουμε
από όλα αυτά;
V. Επίλογος
Η παρουσία σας στο πρώτο μάθημα του Κα-
τηχητικού μου δίνει το θάρρος να πω ότι
ήδη έχετε διαλέξει τον δρόμο τον σωστό.
Όπως είπαμε στο μάθημα, δεν φθάνει μόνο
ότι αρχίσατε καλά. Υπάρχουν πολλά μονο-
πάτια από τα οποία μπορεί κανείς εύκολα
να γλιστρήσει στον κατήφορο του εύκολου
δρόμου της κακίας. Στην πορεία σας θα
συναντήσετε εμπόδια, θα ακούσετε σχόλια
και ειρωνείες από φίλους να σας λένε να
μην πηγαίνετε στο Κατηχητικό, να μην πη-
γαίνετε Εκκλησία κάθε Κυριακή, αλλά μην
τους ακούστε. Αν θέλετε να επιτύχετε και
να κερδίστε την ζωή σας να θυμόσαστε πά-
ντα πως πρέπει να «εισέλθετε δια της στε-
νής πύλης».
Is there another enemy of virtue that prevents
us from acquiring it?
The wicked one, the devil. With bad thoughts,
sinful desires and with temptations and traps he
sets before us. All these create obstacles and
difficulties.
Since there are so many difficulties, can we ev-
er conquer/attain virtues?
We need courage and attention. To acquire vir-
tue we need a joyous mood and the confidence
that we will win. When we strive in good spirits,
without stress, the acquisition of virtue will be a
pleasant struggle.
It also needs a workout. An athlete is constantly
training, and the same applies to spiritual sport.
This training is a continual struggle, a daily ef-
fort to improve ourselves.
So what do we need to do everyday?
If, for example, the student reads with great
care every day, every lesson he has will become
diligent. If he hears his parents every day he
becomes obedient. If he does a good deed every
day he will become workman of good deeds. If
he regularly prays, he will be associated with
God.
Let us assume, therefore, that a child uses all
these means to become virtuous.
Are human efforts sufficient?
One will also need the help of God. They will
need the means of grace. I mean Christ will
need to help us in the struggle, where we have
to deal with so many enemies including Satan
Himself. (John 15: 5) In other words, he needs
constant contact with the Lord.
And how will we be in constant communication
with Christ?
Prayer is the most immediate means. With pray-
er we ask the Lord to come and help us. Confes-
sion then cleanses the wounds and strengthens
us with the grace of forgiveness. With Holy
Communion we accept the Lord in our hearts.
Then what are we afraid of? Christ is always
with us.
