Chapter-CELL-Fundamental unit of life

Section A(very short answer)

1. Why are lysosomes known as suicidal bags of a cell?
Ans- Lysosomes are known as suicide bags of the cell because they contain lytic enzymes
capable of digesting cells and unwanted materials.
2. What is the unit of life?
Ans- cell is the basic unit of life.
3. Why is plasma membrane called a selectively permeable membrane?
Ans- A cell or plasma membrane is called "selectively permeable" because it
is selective about what it allows to pass through it.
4. Name two cell organelles that contain Sown genetic material.
Ans- Mitochondria and plastids

Section B(short answer

5. Differentiate between a prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cell.
Ans- Eukaryotic cells contain membrane-bound organelles, including a nucleus.
Eukaryotes can be single-celled or multi-celled, such as you, me, plants, fungi, and insects.
Bacteria are an example of prokaryotes. Prokaryotic cells do not contain a nucleus or any other
membrane-bound organelle

6. Differentiate between osmosis and diffusion.

Ans- The main difference between the two is that diffusion can occur in any
mixture, even when two solutions are separated by a semipermeable
membrane, whereas osmosis exclusively occurs across a semipermeable
membrane.
7. Write about cell theory.
Ans- all living things are composed of one or more cells; the cell is the basic
unit of life; and new cells arise from existing cells.
8. What are Phanerogams and how they differ from Pteridophytes?
Ans- Phanerogams or spermatophyta are the most advanced type of plants
bearing seeds. They have roots, stems, leaves and flowers.Pteridophytes
have much more primitive type of vascular system. They have advanced
vascular system as compared to pteridophytes

Section C(Long answer type )

9. Write the main function of Ribosomes and Mitochonria.
Ans- The most prominent roles of mitochondria are to produce the energy
currency of the cell, ATP (i.e., phosphorylation of ADP), through respiration, and to
regulate cellular metabolism. The function of ribosomes is to synthesize proteins as
directed in the messenger RNA.
10 Discuss the structure and function of nucleus.

Ans-The main function of the cell nucleus is to control gene expression and
mediate the replication of DNA during the cell cycle. The nucleus is an
organelle found in eukaryotic cells.
