PREFACE

S h ilh a i s one o f th e most w idely d is tr ib u te d o f th e B erber

lan g u ag es. I t i s spoken in southw estern Morocco, and th e d i a l e c t

d e s c rib e d i n t h i s d i s s e r ta tio n i s found i n th e area extending from

.A gadir t o I f n i , and as f a r e a s t as T arouant. Although S h ilh a has

been re p la c e d by A rabic in urban a re a s , i t i s s t i l l th e predom inant

language i n - r u r a l a r e a s . The presence of A rabic has in flu e n c e d th e

d i a l e c t , however, and tr a c e s o f t h i s in flu e n c e are found in th e la r g e

number o f borrowed words th a t occur in th e language. A nother example

o f th e in flu e n c e o f A rabic i s found in th e f a c t th a t two methods o f

counting a re used i n S h ilh a. The f i r s t system , in which n a tiv e

S h ilh a words are u sed , i s found in the speech o f women and occa­

s io n a lly in th e speech o f men in r u r a l a r e a s . The second system

which makes use o f A rabic words i s used g e n e ra lly by men in a l l

b u sin e ss tr a n s a c tio n s . T races o f Spanish and French in flu e n c e a re

a ls o d is c e rn ib le in S h ilh a . The names o f the months, fo r example,

a re o b v io u sly words t h a t have been borrowed from S panish.

The a n a ly s is p re se n te d in t h i s d is s e r ta tio n i s based c h ie f ly

on the speech o f Mr. Madani Embarek, a n a tiv e o f I f n i . A d d itio n a l

m a te r ia l was su p p lie d by h is b r o th e r, Mr. Houssein Bouchenne. Sup­

plem entary evidence to su p p o rt some o f the conclusions reached in

th e a n a ly s is was provided by co n v ersatio n s o f Mr. Embarek, h is

The purpose o f th is grammar i s to provide a g e n e ra l d e s c rip tio n

o f th e s tr u c tu r e o f th e language by examining th e phonology, i . e . ,
