ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I would like to express my special thanks &

gratitude of my physics teacher Mrs. Anjula Kainth

for her able guidance and Mr. Jagdish Sir for his

support in completing my project.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to the

principal ma’am, Mrs M.N. Arul Raj for providing me

with all the facilities which were required

1
CERTIFICATE

This is to certify that ARCHIT YADAV of class

XII-A has successfully completed his
project on topic “To determine Internal
Resistance of a cell using potentiometer”
under complete guidance of the physics
teacher, Anjula Kainth.

2
AIM OF EXPERIMENT

To determine Internal resistance of cell with

the help of potentiometer

3
MATERIALS REQUIRED

1. 1 galvanometer
2. A battery
3. 1 potentiometer
4. 1 rheostat of low resistance
5. A fractional resistance box
6. 1 ammeter
7. 2 numbers keys (one-way)
8. Connecting wires
9. A jockey
10. 1 high resistance box
11. Sandpaper
12. 2 cell
13. 1 set square
14. 1 voltmeter

4
THEORY
PROCEDURE

1. Clean the ends of the connecting wires with sand paper and make tight
connections according to the circuit diagram.
2. Tighten the plugs of the resistance box.The plugs in the resistance box
should be tight.
3. The e.m.f of the cell and battery is more than that of the cell. If it is not
then the null point won’t be obtained.
4. Rheostat resistance can be
made minimum by taking
maximum current from the
battery.
5. Without inserting a plug in
key K2, adjust the rheostat
so that a null point is
obtained on the last.
6. Determine the position of
the null point accurately
using a set square and measure the balancing length (hi) between the
null point and the end P.
7. Next introduce plugs in both keys Ki and K2. At the same time, take out a
small resistance (1 - 5 W) from the shunt resistance box connected in
parallel with the cell.
8. Slide the jockey along a potentiometer wire and obtain the null point.
9. Measure the balancing length (12) from end P.
10. Record your observation and then perform the experiment again with
another cell

5
OBSERVATION

1) Everyday Cell

2) Nippo Cell
