What is a Properties of Dilute and Solubility and

solution ? solution concentrated temperature
solutions
Chapter 2.1 - Dissolving

What is a solution?
The substance that dissolves is called the solute (salts)
The substance that it dissolves into is called the solvent
(Water)
All solutions are transparent -> can see through them
Chapter 2.1 - Dissolving

What is a solution?
Dissolving a colored salt such as copper sulfate
=> it is Blue but transparent
Milk is not transparent-> not a solution, it is opaque.
Chapter 2.1 - Dissolving

What is a solution?
Melting and Dissolving:
Dissolving needs two substances ( a solute and a solvent)

Mass of solute + Mass of solvent = Mass of solution -> not lost, conserved
Chapter 2.1 - Dissolving

What is a solution?
Chapter 2.2 - Solution and solubility

Solutions
is made when a solute is dissolved in a
solvent.

Dilute solution

Concentrated solution
Chapter 2.2 - Solution and solubility

Solubility
A solid that dissolves in a solvent such as water
is soluble
A solid that will not dissolve in water is
insoluble.
Saturated solution is a solution that contains
the maximum amount of solute that can be
dissolved under the condition at which the
solution exists.
Chapter 2.2 - Solution and solubility

Solubility
Solubility: the amount of a given substance that can be
dissolved in a certain amount of solvent.

100 cm3 of water, can dissolve a lot of sodium

chloride in, but only a tiny amount of lead
chloride -> sodium chloride has greater solubility
than lead chloride
Chapter 2.2 - Solution and solubility

Comparing solubility
Chapter 2.2 - Solution and solubility

Temperature and solubility

Most solutes will dissolve more quickly in hot water

than in cold water.

Have 100 g of water at 20°C -> dissolve 204 g of sugar in

heat water to 80°C -> dissolve 362 g of sugar in
Chapter 2.2 - Solution and solubility

different salts
Chapter 2.2 - Solution and solubility

Chapter 2.2 - Solution and solubility

Other solvents
Water is not the only solvent. Some substances that are
insoluble in water will dissolve in other solvents.
