LEARNING
COMPETENCIES
Reads and interprets electric and water meter readings (M6ME-IVd-100)

READ ELECTRIC METERS:

1. Always read all the dials from right to left, starting from Dial E to Dial A.
2. Read the number of the pointer of the dial. When the pointer is between two numbers, the lower number is
recorded.
3. If the pointer appears to be exactly on a number, check the dial to the right to find the correct reading.
 If the dial on the right has passed zero, then use the number the pointer points to on the dial you are
reading.
KEY CONCEPTS TO  If the dial has passed zero, then make use of the smaller number, then make use of the smaller
BE DEVELOPED number of the dial you are reading.
TO READ WATER METERS:
1. Start reading from right to left (clockwise). Read the number by the pointer of the dial. When the pointer is
between two numbers, the lower number is recorded.
2. When the pointer is directly on the number, look at the dial to the right. If it passes zero, use the next
higher number. If the dial has not passed zero, use the lower number.
3. Record the numbers from right to left.

electric and water meter.

PRESENTATION OF ACTIVITY
 Show the class a model of an electric meter and an actual water meter (If available) model of a
water meter, then identify its parts.
 Illustrates how the dials move for the electric and water meters.
 Then the pupils are asked to read the electric and water consumption as shown by the dials.
 Comparison is made between consumptions.
Activity III
GROUP ACTIVITY : R e a d i n g and Interpreting Electric and Water

DIRECTIONS:
Group the pupils into two groups. GROUP I for STATION I and GROUP II for STATION

PRESENTATION E 6673 6816

Station I Guide Questions:

1. Which household consumes the most? The least?
2. Which two houses consumed almost the same kwh?
3. What can you say about their bill?
4. As a household member, how can you lower your electric bill?
5. Why is it important to use electricity wisely?

Station II Guide Questions:

1. In what month do you consume the most water?
2. Least water?
3. What is the average monthly consumption?
4. How many liters of water did they use?
5. What is the equivalent in cubic meters?
ANALYSIS Possible Answer: T o r e a d a w a t e r m e t e r , t h e r e a r e e s s e n t i a l s t e p s t o f o l l o w .
To solve the monthly consumption, you will need to take two water meter
readings: one at the beginning of the month and one at the end of the
month. Follow the same steps as above to record the readings, and then
subtract the initial reading from the final reading to calculate the total
water usage for the month. The water company typically charges based on
the amount of water used, which is measured in gallons or cubic feet,
depending on the unit of measurement used by the water meter.

METER DESIGN ANALYSIS :

ASSIGNMENT Research the Design and Function of Electric and Water Meters.

DIRECTIONS:
Assign students to research the design and function of electric and water meters. Instruct them to
analyze the pros and cons of different meter designs and to propose ideas for how meters could be
improved.
