Comparative Education Reflection #1

The article states a lot of data connected to what the Philippines is doing to

achieve SDG 4. The data presented was eye-opening for me. I was never really

exposed to a detailed explanation or breakdown of it before. To be honest, I never really

paid that much attention to what the government is doing to achieve SDG 4 in public

schools. I have always taught in private schools and that is my main exposure to what an

institution is doing to achieve it. I have seen and experienced how the schools I taught in

are developing programs that will enable them to bring up the level of teaching, and

learning. There is a constant desire to create an environment that will be at par with what

is happening in other countries. The data presented allowed me to see that the

government is indeed trying to meet it but there is still a long way to go.

I feel that funding will be a critical component for us to achieve our goal of quality

education for all. Top private schools can easily do this, but the biggest challenge is

to ensure that all public schools are also given the necessary funding to make this

happen. Policies must be created that will ensure that all the necessary components are

given ample funding. Continuity is also critical that is why the government must ensure

that if a policy or a plan is proven to be effective then it must continue even if there is a

change in leadership. Transparency should also be given importance since this will allow

all stakeholders to understand where the budget was allocated. This will quell any form
of mistrust from the public because they will be able to see for themselves that the funding

given to the agency was indeed used to address the various issues education is facing in

the country.

Given the necessary funding, deficiencies in the number of classrooms can be

addressed. This will allow for the creation of a better learning environment for our

students. The training, and development of our teachers can also be given attention to if

funding for education will be given importance. Private school teachers get to experience

a lot of this, but this should not just be limited to them. Both private, and public school are

important in achieving the goal so teacher training must be made available to all. This

will ensure that we are able to create lessons that will help our students become better

versions of themselves. There are a lot more components that proper funding can

address. It really is a domino effect if it is given importance and is used properly. The

necessary components to achieve the goal will be hit one after the other.

I know that I keep mentioning the idea of funding and how important it is. This belief

that this is a critical component in achieving a goal goes back to my experience as a

teacher, and coach to a team of athletes. I have been developing athletes for a

considerable amount of time already. In my years of coaching, I have noticed that we

achieve success when we do get enough funding for our program. We can address the

deficiencies of each athlete and we are able to create a program that will help them reach

their potential and possibly go beyond it. I firmly believe that this is parallel to how
education in our country will benefit from proper funding. Our country is capable of

achieving the goal of SDG 4 but it will just remain a dream if the people leading will not

allocate the necessary funding to create programs that will help address the issues.

It will take a focused and unselfish leadership to make this a reality.
