Most methods of distillation used by industry and in
laboratory research are variations of simple
distillation.
The process of distillation begins with heating a
liquid in the distilling flask to boiling point. The liquid
evaporates, forming a vapor this process is called
evaporation. The vapor is then cooled, usually by

compounds in solution or to separate mixtures of solutes. For
example, different compounds have different boiling points. This
property means that a more volatile compound will evaporate at
a lower temperature than a less volatile compound. Let us look
at it this way: imagine you have a mixture of two compounds. If
these compounds have different boiling points, you can separate
them using distillation. The process takes advantage of
substances readily changing their 'states of matter' from a liquid
phase to a gas phase and back to a liquid phase again.

3. Discussion:
What processes are involved in distillation?
How does distillation separate mixtures?
What important materials can be derived from
distillation?

4.
B. Guided Practice:
The learners with the help of the teacher will perform the activity.
B. Independent Practice:

Generalization:
1. Distillation is the process of separating the components or
substances from a liquid mixture by using selective boiling
(heating and evaporation) and condensation.
2. There are three processes involved in distillation: b. a.
Heating/boiling b. Evaporation c. Condensation
3. Distillation is used to purify a liquid by separating the
components of a liquid mixture.
4. If there is a sufficient difference between the boiling point of
substances, these components can be separated by simple
distillation.
5. The by-product of distillation is called distillate.

Application:
One of the many products of distillation is alcoholic beverages
like wine and beer. Alcohol is made from grains, fruits or vegetables
through a process called fermentation. Alcohol is extracted from the
fermented mixture by the process of distillation. Ask your parents
about the adverse/ bad effects of drinking too much alcoholic
beverages and make a simple slogan about its effects on the body.
Distillation has many uses. In fact, you may not be aware but many of
the products you use every day are the results of distillation.
Interview your parents about the different by-products of distillation.
