CONTENT ANALYSIS. What do you think is the meaning of Rizal’s statement:

“If the book (Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas) succeeds to awaken your consciousness of our
past, already effaced from your memory, and to rectify what has been falsified and slandered,
then have I not worked in vain, and with this as a basis, however, small it may be, we shall be
able to study the future?”
Answer in 5-7 sentences.

I think the meaning of the statement is that Rizal seeks to correct historical falsehoods.
Rizal seems to be saying that if Morga's book achieves what it portrays, then all the work
that he went into would not have been for nothing. He wants to correct any erroneous
narratives or malicious depictions of Philippine history in the book. He thinks that fixing
mistakes in history is an important step for the intellectual and cultural growth of the
Filipino people. This quote by Rizal shows how important historical awareness, truth, and
a correct understanding of the past are for making smart decisions and moving forward in
the future.
