    The eye has three concentric layers: 1. The outer fibrous layer consists of the sclera and cornea. The sclera is thick and vascular while the cornea is avascular and transparent. 2. The middle vascular layer contains the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. The iris controls the pupil size and the ciliary body produces aqueous humor. 3. The inner sensory layer is the retina, which contains photoreceptor cells and is nourished by the choroid and vitreous humor. Light passes through the layers to the retina where it is processed into visual signals.
