CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
Two significant variables that can affect students' academic success are

self-confidence and self-esteem. While it is well known that these qualities can

affect a student's behaviour and attitudes toward learning, it is still unclear to

what extent they affect academic success. The objective of this study is to offer a

quantitative investigation of the role of students' self-esteem and confidence in

their academic achievement

Self-confidence is a powerful mindset that enables people with a sense of

personal responsibility to make constructive decisions in their lives. It involves

faith in one's own abilities and a positive mental attitude, believing in and relying

on one's own self to achieve a desired outcome. Self-confidence is characterized

by one's mental attitude of trust and reliance on oneself and one's own abilities to

accomplish the task at hand. Students who have a supportive network, including

caring parents, peers, and teachers, exhibit more confidence compared to those

who have negative experiences with their parents, peers, or teachers. A student

who has a positive view of themselves has a realistic grasp of their own abilities

and potential (LONE, 2021).

Self-esteem refers to the way individuals perceive and evaluate their own

worth, abilities, and values. During adolescence, when individuals are exposed to

numerous changes, such as expanding roles and increased responsibilities, Self-

esteem tends to fluctuate. For example, self-esteem often declines in early

adolescence and then recovers in the middle and later stages. Moreover,

adolescents with high levels of self-esteem tend to report positive self-

experiences, beneficial relationships, and better physical and mental health

outcomes compared to those with low self-esteem (Zhao Y, Zheng Z, Pan C and

Zhou L., 2021).

Furthermore, the topic of students' academic performance has been a hot

topic among stakeholders. Schools exist primarily to impart knowledge to their

students, making academic performance a key indicator of students' knowledge.

Numerous policies and innovations have been implemented, and studies have

been and are being conducted to identify ways to improve the performance of

students across all levels of education.

However, low academic performance refers to an individual's inability to

effectively complete their academic duties and maintain the required standard.

This can result in a failure to meet expectations or achieve desired outcomes,

and can negatively impact overall academic success. Hence, to achieve

outstanding academic success, a high level of intelligence is required, but it is not

the only determining factor. Personality, behaviour, and mental characteristics, in

addition to intelligence, can also serve as good predictors of academic

performance. Moreover, the mental activities that students use to process, retain,

evaluate, and apply information when making decisions and solving problems are

essential for effective learning and academic success.

The results of this study can provide insights to students and educators on

the impact of self-confidence and self-esteem on academic performance,

allowing for more effective strategies to be developed for enhancing students'

abilities and achieving their full potential.
