Utilization of Musa acuminata (Lakatan Banana) Extract as primary component of body

moisturizer

A. Problems with chemically and naturally made moisturizers.

Nearly everyone will at some point in their lives encounter dry skin. While many people

only have sporadic episodes, some people have a bothersome and persistent xerosis issue. Eczema

can develop in patients with atopic diathesis from dry skin. Moisturizers are the cornerstone of

many skin disorders' adjuvant therapy, daily maintenance of normal skin, and treatment for dry

skin. (Timothy Corcoran Flynn MD, 2001) When applied as a cream, stearic acid, which is present

in many natural products, acts as a moisturizer to help keep skin hydrated. One type of antioxidant

included in fruits, vegetables, tea, red wine, and chocolate is called polyphenol. (Lutfiah Nur

Fitria1, 2022)

A moisturizer is a kind of cosmetic that draws moisture from the air into the dry stratum

corneum and decreases the amount of water that evaporates from the skin. There are many

moisturizers available on the market, but the majority of them contain several substances that may

interfere with the skin's structure and barrier. (Lutfiah Nur Fitria1, 2022) Moisturizers are used by

people with healthy skin as well as those who have dry skin problems to preserve and enhance

skin smoothness and interrupt the dry skin cycle. While topical medicines can cause allergic

contact dermatitis and other skin conditions, moisturizers are typically regarded as safe. One of
the main contributors of allergic contact dermatitis in cosmetic products is moisturizers. (Matthew

J. Zirwas, 2008)

Even while the FDA mandates that manufacturers of skin-care products identify every

chemical on the label, it might not be possible to understand them all. What is polyglycryl-2

dipolyhydroxystearate and ethylhexylglycerin, anyway? It almost seems as though the purpose of

these ingredient names is to be as confused as possible so that you will buy the product based only

on the guarantee that you will have less wrinkles or more radiant skin in just one month. These

compounds are added by companies to improve the product's scent, extend its shelf life, reduce

costs, and facilitate easier manufacturing. Numerous components in these products have been

demonstrated to cause skin irritation, even if the companies producing them may benefit from

them.( Enlightened Publishing, 2015)

Potential side effects of using banana on skin Although unusual, an allergic response to

this form of face mask is likely. If you are allergic to bananas or latex, you should avoid using a

banana face mask. Pollen allergies might increase your chances of developing banana allergies.

The following symptoms may indicate an allergic response to banana face mask: Itching skin

Swelling of the skin Sneezing Wheezing, and other asthma symptoms A severe allergic response

from bananas is also possible. Anaphylaxis is a potentially fatal disorder that needs immediate

medical attention. Breathing difficulty, face puffiness, and fainting are also symptoms. (Narula,

A., 2022)
B. Phytochemical properties of Musa acuminata (Lakatan Banana).

The various phytochemical components found in Musa acuminata (Lakatan Banana) peels.

Depending on their polarity, different phytoconstituents have been found to have varying degrees

of solubility in various solvent types. The phytochemicals included in the ethanol extract include

flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, and tannins. Only two of the phytochemicals

analyzed—glycosides and alkaloids—were detected in the water extract. (Ehiowemwenguan G.,

2014)

The term "phototoxicity" (also known as "photoirritation") refers to a toxic reaction that

occurs when skin is first exposed to specific chemicals and then exposed to light, or when skin is

exposed to radiation following systemic (oral or intravenous) injection of a chemical agent.

(European Comission,1998) This indicates that some people react negatively with the

phytochemicals of Musa acuminata (Lakatan Banana). With inflammation and swelling being

some of the side effects. If the side effects are noticed, please seek medical advice immediately.
C. Benefits of using Musa acuminata (Lakatan Banana)

Bananas can be used for more than just producing fruit, The main plants are also known as

multifunctional plants because they can also be used for other components of the plant, such as

their leaves or tubers. (Cahyono, 2009).

Bananas are well-known in the field of medicine for their ability to improve digestion and

promote cell renewal. The preservation of calcium, phosphorus, and nitrogen by bananas aids in

tissue regeneration. Additionally, bananas can help treat anemia, uremia, allergies, menstruation

issues, constipation and diarrhea, dysentery, and arthritis and gout symptoms reduction. (Wianlie

Cendana, 2019)

Springer International Publishing states that bananas are utilized as beauty treatments for

the skin and hair. The minerals, vitamins, natural oils, potassium, calcium, and carbohydrates

included in bananas aid in hair smoothing, preserving its elasticity, and preventing breakage and

split ends. In addition, bananas are utilized to replenish lost moisture and soothe dry, chapped, and

damaged skin. Rich in minerals and antioxidants, bananas help maintain youthful skin and stave

off wrinkles. Anti-inflammatory nutrients include zinc, manganese, and vitamin A. (Springer

International Publishing. 2021)
