LONG DIVISION ALGORITHM
Given the polynomials P(x) and D(x), where D(x) ≠ 0,
there exist a unique polynomials Q(x) and R(x), where
R(x) is either 0 or of a degree less than D(x) such that:
Divisor Remainder
𝑃 𝑥 = 𝐷 𝑥 ∙ 𝑄 𝑥 + 𝑅(𝑥)

SYNTHETIC DIVISION
Synthetic Division is the simplest and shortest way
of dividing polynomials by linear expressions of the
form x - a. In this method only the essential parts of
the long division are written.
STEPS IN UISNG SYNTHETIC DIVISION
• STEP 1: Arrange the polynomial function in standard form
then write horizontally the coefficient of each term.
Replace every missing term with 0.
• STEP 2: Write the value of a.
• STEP 3: Draw a horizontal line one space below the
coefficients and bring down the first coefficient
• STEP 4: Multiply the first coefficient and then write the
product below the next coefficient.
• STEP 5: Add the result, then write the sum below the
horizontal bar.
• STEP 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5
