Criterion D

Target market survey - strand i

Responses - 19

Analysis - I chose to conduct a survey with 19 different people who closely matched my target market, which were 11 -
18 year old inorder to gain feedback on my product.

Image Explanation

Question 1 - what would you rate the aesthetics of my

product?

Options 1-5
- 1 - No, not aesthetically pleasing
- 5 - yes, very aesthetically pleasing

When I asked my target market to rank the aesthetics of

my product on a scale of 1 to 5, 42.1% of the respondents
chose 5, which was the highest rating. This demonstrates
that the vast majority of those who saw my product
believed its looks were highly appealing and found my
product very aesthetically pleasing

Question 2 - what is your favorite part about my product?

Options
- size/dimensions (210 x 210 mm) (36%)
- aesthetics/art movement (pop art - de stijl) (40%)
- Manufacturing techniques (24%)

For the second question of my target market survey I

asked what their favorite part was about my product and
the highest votes was option 2 (aesthetics/art movement)
with 40% of the votes which shows that many think the
highlight of my product are the aesthetics and bright
colors. Although, considering the manufacturing of my
product was the least voted with 24% of the votes shows it
still has room for improvement.
Question 3 - do you think that this product will help you
organize your desk?

Options 1 - 5
- 1 - No, not at all
- 2 - Yes, alot

In the third question of my target market survey, I asked if

they felt that my product would help them arrange their
desks on a scale of 1 to 5, and 26.3% chose option 3.
Another 36.8% chose option 4, and 31.6% chose option 5.
It's encouraging to see that the majority of people found
my product useful in helping them arrange their
workstations because that was its primary purpose,
although since many voted for option 3 and 4 there is still
room for vast improvement.

Question 4 - what price range are you willing to pay for

this product?

Options
- 5 - 10 JD (5%)
- 15 - 20 JD (73.7%)
- 25 - 30 JD (21.1%)

I asked my target market what price range they would be

willing to pay for my product in question four and gave
them three options: 5–10 JD, 15-20 JD, and 25–30 JD.
With 73.7% of the total votes, option 2, which is 15 -
20JD, has the most support. Which I will be willing to
meet because it's a fair price for my product and I will be
ranging my final product price in this range.

Question 5 - what would you recommend to improve my

product?

For the fifth question of my target market survey I asked

what they would recommend to improve my product and
received a total of 9 responses for this question. The
majority of recommendations recommended that I add
more partitions or space in general through drawers, extra
shelves or smaller partitions for better organization. Other
responses recommended that I add todo lists/reminders
and this can be incorporated in the future through the use
of adding a small whiteboard on the side of the product.
Question 6 - from 1-5 do you believe the dimensions of
my product are suitable/do you think there is enough space
to store all your items?

Options 1-5
- 1 - No. Not suitable at all
- 5 - Yes, very suitable

For the sixth and final question in my target market survey

i asked my target market if they believe the dimensions of
my product and 47.4% voted for option 4 and 31.6% voted
for option 5 meaning that the majority of the voters think
that the dimensions of my product are very suitable for a
desk organizer

User testing - strand i

In order to test my product in a real life situation I decided to test my product in a real life desk and use the desk
organizer to make sure it functions as its supposed to.

Before The desk I was testing on was generally tidy and wasn't
extremely cluttered previously, but there were lots of
stationery in cup holders and plastic Tupperwares, which
may make it difficult to identify specific things. As you
can see in the after photo, the desk now appears a little bit
neater and is more colorful thanks to the organization of
the books and stationery in one area. Additionally, it
increased the amount of space available for work, writing,
studying, and other activities that the individual would use
the desk for.

This picture shows all the items that were placed inside the
product. Overall i wanted to see how much my product
would fit and it was able to store:
- Scissors
- Stapler
- Over 20 pencils and pens
- Highlighters
- 1 big rolls of tape
- 3 small rolls
- 2 rulers
- 4 papers
With remaining space.

Success criteria/to what extent has the design brief been met? - strand ii

Criteria and rating Justification

Function 5/5 I rated the "function" criterion a 5/5 since it was absolutely beyond my expectations and
carried out my requests. My product's primary purpose was to store and organize files,
workplace essentials, and stationery. I am aware of this because I included a question in my
target market survey asking, "Do you find that this product helped you organize your desk?"
The options were from 1 to 5, 36.8% chose option 4, and 31.6% chose option 5 which shows
the majority agree that the product will help them organize their things.

User - 5/5 The "user" criteria received a 5/5 from me since it absolutely delivered the outcomes I was
after. Secondary students need a decent organizer to assist them manage their time and
correctly keep their belongings because they have a lot of examinations and homework due
each day. My solution can suit their demands. Students in secondary school, especially those
in grades 6 to 12, were my first target audience. Since students need to maintain a lot of
notebooks, I made sure to have plenty of compartments, especially in the drawer, to store a lot
of stationery. I also made sure to have adequate space for files.

Manufacture 3/5 I rated the success criteria “manufacture” a 3/5 because there are things I intended to include
in my product initially that I wasn't able to due to time constraints. For example each and
every partition was supposed to be adjustable and able to be taken out and slid back in using
housing joints across the product but completing that needed a lot of resources and a lot of
time.

Materials - 5/5 I rated the criteria “materials” a 5/5 because similar to my initial plan I intended on only using
MDF and my final product matched my initial plan where I used MDF for the entire product.

Size - 4/5 I gave the success criteria size/dimensions a 4/5 because I ended up with the same dimensions
in my final product as the initial plan. I also proceeded to ask my target market if they thought
the size/dimensions of my product were suitable for a desk organizer and 47.4% voted for
option 4 and 31.6% voted for option 5 clearly showing that the vast majority of respondent
believe the dimensions of my product are very suitable for a desk organizer

Aesthetics - 5/5 I rated the aesthetics of my product a 5/5 considering I followed the mixture of my art
movement accurately and a majority of my target market believes my product is very
aesthetically pleasing. According to my target survey when I asked my target market to rank
the aesthetics of my product on a scale of 1 to 5, 42.1% of the respondents chose 5, which was
the highest rating. This demonstrates that the vast majority of those who saw my product
believed its looks were highly appealing. Further evidence to this is that for the second
question of my target market survey I asked what their favorite part was about my product and
the highest number of votes was option 2 (aesthetics/art movement) with 40% of the votes
which shows that many think the highlight of my product are the aesthetics and bright colors.

Cost 5/5 I questioned my target market about the price they would be prepared to pay for this desk
organizer. Since 15–20 JD received 73.7% of the votes, I will make an effort to adjust my
final price to fall within this range. The major component of my product is MDF, and because
a 12-pack of 9- to 12-inch MDF boards costs around $20, I can create two of them. The
projected cost of my product would be 16 dollars because each item required 10 dollars worth
of MDF, plus an additional 6 dollars for paint and production.
Environment 5/5 I rated the criteri environment a 5/5 because my entire product is environmentally friendly
considering the entirety of it is made out of MDF-Medium density fiberboard which is made
fully out of recycled wood and does not promote harming the environment by cutting down
trees

Safety 5/5 I rated the criteria safety 5/5 because during the manufacturing process of my product I made
sure to make it fully safe, i did this by curving all the edges and sharp corners using sand
paper. I also made sure to use a good amount of glue to make sure that it doesn't break or fall
apart.

Strengths, weaknesses and improvements - strand iii

Strengths Weaknesses Improvement

One of the strengths of my product is Although having many partitions is a As an improvement i will make the
the high amount of partitions which strength it can also be a weakness, partitions using a tongue and groove
provide several compartments to this is because small partitions won't join next time which will will the the

availability of the compartment in stationary supply and depending on partitions as they wish.

organization and variety which give compartment more than a smaller Tongue and groove joint

thing with completely different sizes. product can also make it hard to easily
reach very small items.

Explain the impact of the solution on the client/target audience - strand iv

To what extent has the clients or target audience's problem been solved?
- The extent to which my clients/target audiences problem has been solved is very high. This is because in
criterion A the issue I was dealing with was that students weren't able to focus and found that their desks are
very extremely messy and they aren't able to find a desk organizer that is both functional and aesthetically
pleasing. I know that the problem has been addressed according to my target market survey when I asked if
they felt that my product would help them arrange their desks on a scale of 1 to 5, and 26.3% chose option 3.
Another 36.8% chose option 4, and 31.6% chose option 5. It's encouraging to see that the majority of people
found my product useful in helping them arrange their workstations because that was its primary purpose.

How does this solution improve the target audience’s situation?

- The circumstance of my audience was made better by my goods. I am aware of this since criteria A's statistical
data showed that students waste over 32% of their time tidying up their workspaces or cleaning their desks,
when they might be spending that time studying or doing other more essential activities. More than 87% of
students, according to Techjury, could significantly enhance their academic performance and learning if they
had better organizing abilities, which is where my solution comes in. In this instance, my product helped my
target audience by arranging and keeping their desk/workplace constantly clean and tidy, saving time that
would have been spent studying and allowing you to concentrate better when studying and lowering stress
levels.

Are there negative effects to the solution?

- Yes, despite the fact that my product aids students in time management and desk organization, which will
improve their learning and raise their marks, it has a detrimental impact. The student could eventually grow
dependent on my product to keep and manage their stationery, failing to develop any organizing skills that will
be useful to them in the future. Even while the product helps the student, if it were to go lost or broken in the
future, whether it were the student's fault or not, they wouldn't be able to manage their time on their own.

Link to global context/exploration – orientation in space and time.

- Because my product is designed to help you manage your stationary, keeping your desk tidy for most, if not all
of the time, it leverages available space to help achieve this. This is how my product links to the global context,
which is "orientation in space and time." Because it is a time management tool that encourages you to make the
most of your available time by preventing waste, you can now use that time to study instead of wasting it on
chores like cleaning your desk. This also relates to orientation in space and time.
