ACTIVITY TASK SHEET No. 4

Learning Competencies:
1. Explain various volcano-related hazards;
2. Differentiate among different volcanic hazards;
3. Recognize signs of an impending volcanic eruption.

Name of Student: BALLINAN, Katrina Jade A. Grade and Section: 11-St.Albert the Great

IV-A. Volcanic Hazards

Volcanoes in the Philippines are a major source of hazards. The archipelago was formed largely by
volcanism and has one of the biggest concentrations of volcanoes. The Philippines is located on the Pacific
Ring of Fire where multiple tectonic plates meet. Most of the world's volcanoes have formed in the Ring of Fire
because of this tectonic plate activity, more than 75% (452 volcanoes). With 53 volcanoes in the Philippines
combined with their tropical weather, volcanic eruptions and side effects of volcanic activity leave the
Philippines at great risk for all kinds of destruction.

The following are your tasks for this activity:

1. Using the table below list at least 20 active volcanoes in the Philippines. (20 points)

(Use any font color for your answers)

a. Enumerate ways by which communities near volcanoes can be protected from lava
flows.

b. In situations where evacuation cannot be carried out right away, what personal safety
measures can one adopt as protection from the effects of volcanic gases?

c. Name ways by which pyroclastic flow hazard maps may be used as safety guides by
planners and residents.

d. What was the biggest cause of death during the Pinatubo ashfalls? What contributed to
these incidents?

e. How is it relevant to distinguish lahar deposits from non-lahar deposits? How important
is it to differentiate types of lahars?

f. What would be the best thing to do to ensure one’s safety from debris avalanches?

The following is your task for this activity:

1. Paper Advertisement. As a local government official, you are tasked to create a flyer about
volcanic eruption to ensure the safety of the people living in communities near volcanoes. Choose
one from the following:

a. Create a flyer about the things to do for a specific volcanic hazard.

Example: Things to do before, during, and after pyroclastic flow.
Things to do before, during, and after ashfall.
Things to do before, during, and after debris avalanche.
or

b. Create a flyer on the general rules on the things to do before, during, and after a volcanic
eruption.

2. You may use any editing tools/apps. Size must be Letter (8.5 x 11 inches), Landscape, and divided
into 3 to 4 columns. Do not forget to insert your name in the flyer. Save as picture file format.
