STEADY STATE

THEORY VS BIG
BANG THEORY
One of the elegant features of the Steady State theory is
that because the Universe is infinitely old the question
of its origin doesn’t arise. It has always existed.

The Big Bang Theory, proposed by George Gammow

believes that the universe always changes but the
Steady-state Theory, proposed by Fred Hoyle believes it
is and always has been the exact same forever and will

THE BIG BANG never change.

THEORY
suggests that the universe has a
beginning in the form of a singularity that
is unimaginably hot and dense.

STEADY STATE
THEORY
suggests that the universe has no
beginning and matter was created at a
constant state throughout an infinite time.

BOTH THE BIG BANG THEORY AND THE STEADY

STATE THEORY
believes that the universe is expanding,
but the Steady State Theory states that
the expansion is at a constant rate and
new matter is created, while the Big Bang
Theory states that the expansion would
slow over time.

EVIDENCES THAT LEAD TO THE

REJECTION OF THE STEADY STATE
THEORY:
1. Radio Telescope Observation - this observation was saying that there were
more cosmic radio sources billion years ago than there are now. This would
suggest that the universe is changing over time wich contradicted the theory.

2. Discovery of Quasars - bright objects but are very small, only found at great
distances from us. Light from them was emitted billions of light years ago. The
fact that quasars are only found in the early Universe provides strong evidence
that the Universe has change over time.

3. Cosmic Microwave Background - this is a weak background radiation wich

fills the whole space and is the same in all directions. In the steady Steady
State Theory it is almost impossible to explain the origin of this radiation.
