The Steady-State Theory
What is the steady-state theory?
is a view that the universe is always expanding yet
maintaining a constant average density, matter being
continuously created to form new stars and galaxies at
the same rate
that old ones become unobservable as a consequence of
their increasing distance and velocity of recession.
The Steady-State Theory
The Steady State Theory suggest that:
• The universe did not start with an explosion and was
always the way it is now.

• The universe has always existed and will always exist;

and the universe is expanding.

• The density of the universe does not change.

• Hydrogen gas bubbles build up into the universe so the

density doesn’t change.

Fun Fact
Did you know?

that the steady state theory

started when Fred Hoyle,
Hermann Bondi, and Thomas
Gold was inspired by a movie
they watched entitled Dead of
Night.
DYK?

By the early 1970s the Steady State Theory

was no longer accepted by the vast majority
of cosmologists.
Main Idea
Main Idea
At the heart of the Steady State Theory is
the Perfect Cosmological Principle.
Universe is infinite in extent, infinitely old, and it
is the same in all directions; and at all times in
the past and at all times in the future, is one of
the major features of the Steady State Theory.
