MACHINE DESIGN – WELDED JOINTS

QUIZ -1
Time Allowed: 30 minutes 04th of June 2021

Questions 01: [50 marks]

a) List four advantages of welded joints over riveted joints. [10 marks]

b) An eccentrically loaded bracket is welded to the support as shown in Figure-Q2. The

bracket is held by three fillet welds having throat areas A1, A2 and A3 as shown in the
Figure-Q2. If the permissible shear stress for the weld material is 55 MPa and applied
eccentric load is 25 kN, determine the required throat and leg dimensions for the welds.

Quiz-1

Annex
Polar moment of inertia of a fillet weld about an axis passing though G is given
by as follows.

r1
𝑡𝑙13
l1 𝐽1 = + 𝐴1 𝑟12
12
Throat area
A1 = t×l1

Similarly, for other welds,

𝑡𝑙23 𝑡𝑙33
𝐽2 = + 𝐴2 𝑟22 , 𝐽3 = + 𝐴3 𝑟32
12 12
Where, r1 = GG1, r2 = GG2, r3=GG3 and l1, l2, l3 are weld lengths
Then resultant polar moment of inertia is given by, J = J1 + J2 + J3
Primary shear τ1 = Load/Throat area, Secondary shear τ2 = T×r/J
