The Tenth of Muharram; The Day of `Ashura’
‫ﺷﮩﺎدت ﺎ دن ﯾﮧ اﺋﻤﮧ ﻃﺎ ﻦ اور ان‬ ؑ ‫ﯾﮧ ﯾﻮم ﻋﺎﺷﻮر ﺟﻮ اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ‬
، ‫اور ﺣﺰن و ﻣﻼل ﻣ ر ﺎدن‬ ‫ﭘ و ﺎروں ﮐ ﻠ ﻣﺼ ﺖ ﺎ دن‬
On this day, Imam al-husayn (as) was martyred. It is
indeed the day of the calamitous misfortune and the day of
grief for the Holy Imams (`a) and their adherents.
‫ﮐﮧ اﻣﺎم ﻋ ؑ ﭼﺎ اور ان اﺗ ﺎع ﮐﺮ وا ﻣﻮﻣﻦ ﻣﺴﻠﻤﺎن آج‬ ‫ﺑﮩ ﯾ‬
‫دن دﻧ ﺎوی ﺎﻣﻮں ﻣ ﻣ وف ﻧﮧ ﻮں اور ﮔﮭﺮ ﻟ ﮐﭽﮫ ﻧﮧ ﻤﺎﺋ ﻠ ﮧ‬
‫اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ ؑ ﮐ ﻠ ﻣﺠﺎﻟﺲ ﺑ ﺎ ﮐ ﮟ اور‬، ‫ﻧﻮﺣﮧ و ﻣﺎﺗﻢ اور ﻧﺎﻟﮧ ﺎئ ﮐﺮ ر‬
‫اس ﻃ ح ﻣﺎﺗﻢ و ﺳ ﻨﮧ ز ﮐ ﮟ ﺟﺲ ﻃ ح اﭘ ﮐ ﻋ ﺰ ﻣﻮت ﭘﺮ ﻣﺎﺗﻢ ﮐ ﺎ‬
‫ﮐﺮ ﻮں‬
Thus, the Shi`ah are required to stop earning any worldly
benefit, stop storing anything in their houses, and devote
themselves to weeping and mourning the misfortunes of
Imam al-husayn (as). They are thus required to hold
consolation ceremonies in the same way as they do for
their dead sons and relatives.

‫اﻟﺴ ُم‬ ‫إﻣﺎم اﻟ ُﺤ َﺴ ْ َﻋﻠ ْ ِﻪ‬
َ ‫ز ﺎرت ﻋﺎﺷﻮرا‬
Ziyarah of ‘Ashura Imam Husayn (as)
، ‫ذﮐﺮ ﻮ‬ ‫ﺎب ﻣ‬ ‫آج دن اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ ؑ ز ﺎرت ﻋﺎﺷﻮر ﭘﮍﮬ ﺟﻮ ﺗ‬
‫ﺣ ت ﻗﺎﺗﻠﻮں ﭘﺮ ﺑﮩﺖ ز ﺎدە ﻟﻌﻨﺖ ﮐ ﮟ اور‬
They are also required to visit the holy tomb of Imam al-
husayn (as) with the famous form of Ziyarah (Ziyarat
`Ashura’) that will be later on cited in this book. They are
also required to invoke curse upon the enemies and slayers
of Imam al-husayn (as) and

‫آپ ﭘﺮ ﺳﻼم ﻮاے ا ﺎ ﻋ ﺪ ﷲ‬
Peace be upon you, O Aba-`Abdullah.

ِ ‫ﻮل ٱ‬
ِ ‫اﻟﺴ ؑ م ﻋﻠ ﻚ ﺎ ﺑﻦ رﺳ‬
‫ﻓﺮزﻧﺪ‬ ‫آپ ﭘﺮ ﺳﻼم ﻮاے رﺳﻮل ﺧﺪا‬
Peace be upon you, O son of Allah’s Messenger.
‫ﻮ۔‬ ‫آﺳﺎ‬ ‫ﺗﺎ ﮧ ﭘﮍﮬ ﻣ‬ ‫ﻋﻠ ﺤﺪە ﮐﺮ د ﺎ‬ ‫اس ﮐﺘﺎﺑ‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ﻢ‬ ‫وﺟﮧ‬ ‫ دﻋﺎء ﻃ ﻞ ﻮ‬: ‫ﻧﻮٹ‬
Note : As this supplication is lenghty, we have separetd it from this booklet,
this is just to ease in reading.

‫ﻗﺎﺗﻠﻮں ﭘﺮ ﻟﻌﻨﺖ ﮐ ﮟ‬
‫ﻗﺎﺗﻠﻮں ﭘﺮ ﺑﮩﺖ ز ﺎدە ﻟﻌﻨﺖ ﮐ ﮟ اور‬ ‫ت‬ ‫دن ﺣ‬ ‫آج‬
They are also required to invoke curse upon the enemies
and slayers of Imam al-husayn (as) and

‫ﮐﻮ ﭘﺮﺳﮧ دﯾﮟ۔‬ ‫ا ﮏ دو‬


‫ﭘﺮﺳﮧ دﯾﮟ۔‬ ‫ﮐﻮ اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ ؑ ﻣﺼ ﺖ ﭘﺮ ان اﻟﻔﺎظ ﻣ‬ ‫ا ﮏ دو‬
express sympathy to each other, saying,
َ ‫ﱠ‬ َ َ ََ ُ ُ َ ْ
‫ٱﻟﺴ ُم‬ ‫ﻮرﻧﺎ ِ ُﻤ َﺼ ِﺎﺑﻨﺎ ِ ﭑﻟ ُﺤ َﺴ ْ ﻋﻠ ْ ِﻪ‬ ‫اﻋﻈﻢ ٱ اﺟ‬
ؑ ‫اﺟﺮ و ﺛﻮاب ﮐﻮ اس ﭘﺮ ﺟﻮ ﮐﭽﮫ ﻢ اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ‬ ‫ﻤﺎر‬ ‫ﷲ ز ﺎدە ﮐﺮ‬
‫ﺳﻮﮔﻮاری ﻣ ﮐﺮ ﮨ‬
May Allah double up our rewards on account of our sorrow
for (the martyrdom of) al-Husayn (`a)
َ ‫ﱠ‬ َ
‫َو َﺟ َﻌﻠﻨﺎ َو ِ ﱠ ﺎ ْﻢ ِﻣ َﻦ ٱﻟﻄ ِﺎﻟ ِﺒ َ ِﺑﺜﺎرِە‬
‫ﻗﺮار دے‬ ‫ﺧﻮن ﺎ ﺪﻟﮧ ﻟﯿ واﻟﻮں ﻣ‬ ؑ ‫اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ‬ ‫ﺗﻤﮩ‬ ‫اور ﻤ‬
and may He include you and us with those who shall take
revenge upon his killers

‫آل ُﻣ َﺤ ﱠﻤ ٍﺪ ﻋﻠ ْﻴ ِﻬ ُﻢ‬ َ ‫َ َ َ ﱢ‬
ِ ‫ﻣﻊ و ِﻟ ِﻪ ِٱﻹﻣ ِﺎم ٱﻟﻤﻬ ِﺪي َ ِﻣﻦ‬
‫ٱﻟﺴ ُم‬‫ﱠ‬
‫۔‬ ‫ﮨ‬ ‫ﻢ رﺎب ﻮ ﮐﺮ ﮐﮧ ﺟﻮ آل ﷴ ﻣ‬ ؑ
‫ﻣﮩﺪی‬ ‫اﭘ و اﻣﺎم‬
with his blood-claimer; Imam al-Mahdi, who belongs to the
Household of Muhammad, peace be upon them all.

‫ﻣﺠﻠﺲ اور واﻗﻌﺎت ﺷﮩﺎدت ﭘﮍﮬ‬


‫ﮐﮧ آج دن اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ ؑ ﻣﺠﻠﺲ اور واﻗﻌﺎت ﺷﮩﺎدت ﮐﻮ ﭘﮍﮬ‬ ‫وری‬
، ‫اور دو وں ﮐﻮ رﻻﺋ‬ ‫ﺧﻮد روﺋ‬
The adherents (Shi`ah) of Imam al-husayn (as) should
confer the martyrdom of their Imam and should weep for
him.
‫ﻣﻼﻗﺎت ﮐﺮ اور‬ ؑ ‫ﮐﮧ ﺟﺐ ﺣ ت ﻣﻮ ٰؑ ﮐﻮ ﺣ ت ﺧ‬ ‫روا ﺖ ﻣ‬
‫ان ﺗﻌﻠ ﻢ ﻟﯿ ﺎ ﺣ ﻢ ﻮا ﺗﻮ ﺳﺐ ﭘﮩ ﺎت ﺟﺲ ﭘﺮ ان درﻣ ﺎن‬
‫ﻣﺬا ﺮە ﻣ ﺎﻟﻤﮧ ﻮا وە ﯾﮧ ﮐﮧ ﺣ ت ﺧ ؑ ﺣ ت ﻣﻮ ٰؑ ﺳﺎﻣ ان‬
‫اور ان دوﻧﻮں ﺑﺰرﮔﻮاروں ان‬، ‫ﻣﺼﺎﺋﺐ ﺎ ذﮐﺮ ﮐ ﺎ ﺟﻮ آل ﷴ ﭘﮧ آﻧﺎ ﺗﮭ‬
‫ﻣﺼﺎﺋﺐ ﭘﺮ ﺑﮩﺖ ﮔ ﮧ و ﺎ ﮐ ﺎ ۔‬
It is narrated that when Prophet Moses (as) was ordered to
meet the Scholar, namely al-Khazir (as), the first matter
they discussed was the misfortune that the Household of
Prophet Muhammad (as) would face. They therefore wept
heavily for these misfortunes.
ؑ ‫ﻣ ﻣﻘﺎم ذ ﻘﺎر ﻣ اﻣ اﻟﻤﺆﻣﻨ‬:‫اﺑﻦ ﻋ ﺎس روا ﺖ ﮐﮧ اﻧﮩﻮں ﮐﮩﺎ‬
‫ﺣﻀﻮر ﮔ ﺎﺗﻮ آپ ا ﮏ ﮐﺘﺎ ﭽﮧ ﻧ ﺎﻻ ﺟﻮ آپ ﺎ اﭘﻨﺎ ﻟ ﮭﺎ ﻮا اور رﺳﻮل ﷲ ﺎ‬
‫ﺳﺎﻣ ﭘﮍﮬﺎ اس ﻣ اﻣﺎم‬ ‫ آپ اس ﺎ ﮐﭽﮫ ﺣﺼﮧ ﻣ‬،‫ﻟ ﮭﻮا ﺎ ﻮا ﺗﮭﺎ‬
‫ﺣﺴ ؑ ﺷﮩﺎدت ﺎ ذﮐﺮ ﺗﮭﺎ اور ا ﻃ ح ﯾﮧ ﺑ ﺗﮭﺎ ﮐﮧ ﺷﮩﺎدت ﮐﺲ ﻃ ح ﻮ‬
‫ﮐﻮن ﮐﻮن آپ ﻣﺪد و ﻧ ت ﮐﺮ ﺎ اور‬، ‫اور ﮐﻮن آپ ﮐﻮ ﺷﮩ ﺪ ﮐﺮ ﺎ‬
ؑ ‫ﻤﺮﺎب رە ﮐﺮ ﺷﮩ ﺪ ﻮ ﺎ ﯾﮧ ذﮐﺮ ﭘﮍھ ﮐﺮ اﻣ اﻟﻤﺆﻣﻨ‬ ‫ﮐﻮن ﮐﻮن آپ‬
‫ﺧﻮد ﺑ ﮔ ﮧ ﮐ ﺎ اور ﻣﺠﮫ ﮐﻮ ﺑ ﺧﻮب رﻻ ﺎ ۔ﻣﺆﻟﻒ ﮐﮩ ﮨ‬
Ibn `Abbas is reported to have said, “When I accompanied
Imam `Ali (as) in Dhi-Qar, he took out a paper comprising
the dictations of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and handwritten
by Imam `Ali (as) himself. He read some segments of that
paper and I heard. It contained the story of Imam al-
husayn’s martyrdom with full details of the way he would
be killed, the person who would kill him, those who would
support him, and those who would be martyred with him.
Imam `Ali (as) then wept heavily and caused me to weep.”
‫ا ﺮ اس ﮐﺘﺎب ﻣ ﮔﻨﺠﺎ ﺶ ﻮ ﺗﻮ ﻣ ﯾﮩﺎں اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ ؑ ﮐﭽﮫ ﻣﺼﺎﺋﺐ‬
‫ﻟ ﮑﻦ ﻣﻮﺿ ع ﻟﺤﺎظ اس ﻣ ان واﻗﻌﺎت ﺎ ذﮐﺮ ﻧﮩ ﮐ ﺎ‬، ‫ذﮐﺮ ﮐﺮﺗﺎ‬
‫ﻟﮩﺬا ﻗﺎرﺋ ﻣ ی ﮐﺘﺐ ﻣﻘﺎﺗﻞ ﻃﺮف رﺟ ع ﮐ ﮟ ۔‬، ‫ﺟﺎﺳﮑﺘﺎ‬
There is not enough space in this book to mention a part of
the story of Imam al-husayn’s martyrdom; therefore, the
complete story can be seen in the books specified for this
respect. These books are called al-maqtal.
‫روﺿﮧ اﻗﺪس‬ ؑ ‫ﺧﻼﺻﮧ ﯾﮧ ﮐﮧ ا ﺮ ﮐﻮ ﺷﺨﺺ آج دن اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ‬
‫ ﺟﺲ‬، ‫ﻧﺰد ﮏ رە ﮐﺮ ﻟﻮﮔﻮں ﮐﻮ ﺎ ﻼﺗﺎ ر ﺗﻮ وە اس ﺷﺨﺺ ﻣﺎﻧﻨﺪ‬
‫ﻤﺮﺎب ﮐ ﻼ ﻣ ﻣﻮﺟﻮد ر ﺎ ﻮ‬ ‫ﺣ ت ﻟﺸﮑﺮ ﮐﻮ ﺎ ﻼ ﺎ ﻮ اور آپ‬
‫ روا ﺖ ﻣ‬، ‫ﺑﮍی ﻓﻀ ﻠﺖ‬ ‫آج دن ﺰار ﻣﺮﺗﺒﮧ ﺳﻮر ﺗﻮﺣ ﺪ ﭘﮍﮬ‬
، ‫ﮐﮧ ﺧﺪا ﺗﻌﺎ ٰ ا ﺷﺨﺺ ﭘﺮ ﻧﻈﺮ رﺣﻤﺖ ﻓﺮﻣﺎﺗﺎ‬
At any rate, if one offers water to people on this day at the
holy tomb of Imam al-husayn (as), his reward will be
similar to the reward of one who offered water to the
companions of Imam al-husayn (as) at Karbala'. A great
reward is also recorded for one who repeats Surah al-
Tawhed one thousand times on this day. It is narrated that
Almighty Allah shall have a merciful look at one who
repeats this Surah one thousand times on this day.
‫۔ ﺟﻮ دﻋﺎ ﻋ ات‬ ‫ﺗﺎ ﺪ ﻓﺮﻣﺎ‬ ‫ﺳ ﺪ آج دن ا ﮏ دﻋﺎ ﭘﮍﮬ‬
‫۔‬ ‫ ﻠ ﮧ ﻌﺾ روا ﺎت ﻣﻄﺎﺑﻖ وە دﻋﺎ ﻋ ات‬، ‫ﻣﺜﻞ‬
Sayyid Ibn Tawus has mentioned a prayer similar to Du`a'
al-`Asharat to be said on this day. More specifically,

this prayer seems to be the same as Du`a' al-`Asharat but


according to another narration.
ؑ
‫ﮐﮧ‬ ‫ﺷﯿﺦ ﻋ ﺪ ﷲ ﺑﻦ ﺳﻨﺎن اﻧﮩﻮں اﻣﺎم ﺟﻌﻔﺮ ﺻﺎدق روا ﺖ‬
‫ﯾﻮم ﻋﺎﺷﻮر ﮐﻮ ﭼﺎﺷﺖ وﻗﺖ ﭼﺎر رﮐﻌﺖ ﻧﻤﺎز و دﻋﺎ ﭘﮍﮬ ﭼﺎ ﮐﮧ ﺟ‬
‫ﺲ ﺟﻮ ﺷﺨﺺ ا ﭘﮍﮬﻨﺎ ﭼﺎ ﺘﺎ‬ ‫ﻢ اﺧﺘﺼﺎر ﭘ ﺶ ﻧﻈﺮ ﺗﺮک ﮐﺮ د ﺎ‬
‫ﮐﺘﺎب زاداﻟﻤﻌﺎد ﻣ ﻣﻼﺣﻈﮧ ﮐﺮ ۔‬ ‫ﻮ وە ﻋﻼﻣﮧ ﻣﺠﻠ‬
Shaykh al-Tusi has mentioned that `Abdullah ibn Sin¡n
reported from Imam al-S¡diq (as) a four unit prayer and
a prayer to be offered and said at the first hours of this
day; but on account of briefness, they will not be cited in
this book. They, however, can be seen in the book of Zad
al-Ma`ad.
‫ ﻌ‬،‫وری اور ﻣﻨﺎﺳﺐ ﮐﮧ ﺷ ﻌﮧ ﻣﺴﻠﻤﺎن آج دن ﻓﺎﻗﮧ ﮐ ﮟ‬ ‫ﯾﮧ ﺑ‬
‫ﻌﺪ ا‬ ‫ ﻣﮕﺮ روز ﺎ ﻗﺼﺪ ﺑ ﻧﮧ ﮐ ﮟ ﻋ‬، ‫ﮐﭽﮫ ﮐﮭﺎﺋ ﭘﺌ ﻧﮩ‬
‫اﻓﻄﺎر ﮐ ﮟ ﺟﻮ ﻣﺼ ﺖ زدە ا ﺴﺎن ﮐﮭﺎ ﮨ ﻣﺜﻼ دودھ ﺎ د وﻏ ە‬ ‫ﭼ‬
‫ﻧ آج دن ﻗﻤ ﻀﻮں ﮔ ﺎن ﮐﮭ رﮐﮭ اور آﺳ ﯿﻨ ﭼﮍﮬﺎ ﮐﺮ ان ﻟﻮﮔﻮں‬
‫ﻃ ح ر ﺟﻮ ﻣﺼ ﺖ ﻣ ﻣﺒﺘﻼ ﻮ ﮨ ﻌ ﻣﺼ ﺖ زدە ﻟﻮﮔﻮں ﺟ‬
‫ﺷ ﻞ و ﺻﻮرت ﺑﻨﺎ ر ۔‬
The adherents of Imam al-husayn (`a) are required not to
eat or drink anything on this day, but not in the intention of
ritual fasting, and to break this abstention from food and
drink with a meal that is usually offered to the unfortunate
people, such as yoghurt, milk, or the like meals; and that
should be at the last hour of this day after the afternoon
time. In other words, they should avoid having rich or
delicious meals on this day, for it is a day of misfortune.
They are also required to put on clean dresses and to
unfasten the buttons and raise their sleeves just like the
unfortunate people.

‫ﻣﺤﺮم ﺎ روزە ﻧﮧ رﮐﮭ ﮐﯿﻮﻧﮑﮧ ﺑ اﻣﯿﮧ اور ان ﭘ و ﺎر ان دو دﻧﻮں ﮐﻮ اﻣﺎم‬
‫ﺎﻋﺚ ﺑﮍ ﺎﺑﺮﮐﺖ وﺣﺸﻤﺖ ﺗﺼﻮر ﮐﺮ ﮨ اور ان‬ ‫ﺣﺴ ؑ ﮐﻮ ﻗﺘﻞ ﮐﺮ‬
‫وﺿ ﺣﺪﯾﺜ ﺣ ت رﺳﻮل‬ ‫اﻧﮩﻮں ﺑﮩﺖ‬، ‫دﻧﻮں ﻣ روزە رﮐﮭ ﺗﮭ‬
‫ﻃﺮف ﻣ ﺴﻮب ﮐﺮ ﯾﮧ ﻇﺎ ﺮ ﮐ ﺎ ﮐﮧ ان دو دﻧﻮں ﺎ روزە رﮐﮭ ﺎ ﺑﮍا اﺟﺮ و‬
‫ﺛﻮاب ﺣﺎﻻﻧﮑﮧ اﮨﻠﺒ ﺖ ﻣﺮوی ﮐﺜ ﺣﺪﯾﺜﻮں ﻣ ان دودﻧﻮں اور ﺧﺎص ﮐﺮ‬
، ‫ﻣﺬﻣﺖ آ‬ ‫ﯾﻮم ﻋﺎﺷﻮر ﺎ روزە رﮐﮭ‬
In Zad al-Ma`ad, `All¡mah al-Majlisi says that it is
preferable not to observe fasting on the ninth and tenth of
Muharram because the Umayyads used to observe fasting
on these two days in order to express delight for and to
gloat over the martyrdom of Imam al-husayn (as). Having
seen a good omen in the killing of Imam al-husayn (as),
the Umayyads and their fans fabricated many lies against
the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and falsely ascribed to him that
he mentioned many merits to be the reward of those who
would observe fasting on these two days. On the other
hand, the Holy Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) are reported
to have warned against observing fasting on these two
days in general and on the tenth of Muharram, the Day of
`Ashura’, in particular.
‫ﺑ اﻣﯿﮧ اور ان ﭘ وی ﮐﺮ وا ﺑﺮﮐﺖ ﺧ ﺎل ﻋﺎﺷﻮرا دن ﺳﺎل ﺑﮭﺮ‬
‫ﺎ ﺧﺮﭼﮧ ﺟﻤﻊ ﮐﺮ رﮐﮫ ﻟﯿ ﺗﮭ ا ﺑﻨﺎ ﭘﺮ اﻣﺎم رﺿﺎ ﻣﻨﻘﻮل ﮐﮧ ﺟﻮ‬
‫ﺷﺨﺺ ﯾﻮم ﻋﺎﺷﻮر اﭘﻨﺎ دﻧ ﺎوی ﺎرو ﺎر ﭼﮭﻮڑ ر ﺗﻮ ﺣﻖ ﺗﻌﺎ ٰ اس دﻧ ﺎ و‬

The Umayyads—may Allah curse them—used to store up


their annual nutriment in their houses on the tenth of
Muharram; accordingly, Imam al-Riz¡ (as) is reported to
have said, “If one refrains from arranging for any worldly
benefit on the tenth of Muharram, Almighty Allah will grant
him all his needs for this world and the world to come. If
one considers the tenth of Muharram to be the day of his
misfortune, sadness, and weeping, Almighty Allah will
make the Resurrection Day the day of his delight and
happiness; and he will be delighted by us in Paradise. If
one considers the tenth of Muharram to be a blessed day
and he thus stores up any annual nutriment on that day,
Almighty Allah will not bless that which he stored up and
will add him to the gang of Yazid, `Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad,
and `Umar ibn Sa`d—may Allah curse them all.”
‫اور‬ ‫اس ﻟ ﯾﻮم ﻋﺎﺷﻮر ﻣ ﮐ ا ﺴﺎن ﮐﻮ دﻧ ﺎ ﺎرو ﺎر ﻣ ﻧﮩ ﭘﮍﻧﺎ ﭼﺎ‬
‫ﻧﻮﺣﮧ و ﻣﺎﺗﻢ اور رﻧﺞ و ﻏﻢ ﻣ ﻣﺸﻐﻮل ر ﻨﺎ ﭼﺎ‬، ‫اس ﺠﺎ ﮔ ﮧ و زاری‬

‫ﺮﮔﺰ‬ ‫ اور ﮐﮭ ﻞ ﮐﻮد ﻣ‬،‫ﭘ ﮐ ﮟ‬ ‫آج دن ﺴ‬، ‫ﺟ ﺲ ﺟﻤﻊ ﻧﮧ ﮐﺮ‬
‫ﺰار ﻣﺮﺗﺒﮧ ﻟﻌﻨﺖ‬ ‫ﻗﺎﺗﻠﻮں ﭘﺮ ان اﻟﻔﺎظ ﻣ‬ ؑ ‫ﻣﺸﻐﻮل ﻧﮧ ﻮں اور اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ‬
:‫ﮐ ﮟ‬
In conclusion, it is required to suspend any worldly activity
on this day and to devote oneself to weeping, mourning the
martyrdom of Imam al-Husayn (as), recalling his
misfortunes, and ordering one’s family members to hold a
consolation ceremony in the same way as one may hold for
his dearest people. It is also required to abstain from
eating and drinking up to the last hour of the day at which
one may break the abstention with a drink of water at
least, without intending ritual fasting, since to observe
fasting on this day is discommended except in cases of
obligatory fasting, such as vow fasting and the like. It is
also required not to store up anything in the houses, not to
laugh, not to entertain oneself, and not to play. It is
recommended, on this day, to invoke Almighty Allah to lay
curse on the slayers of Imam al-Husayn (as) one thousand
times by saying following statement:
‫اﻟﻠ ُـﻬ ﱠﻢ اﻟ َﻌ ْﻦ َﻗ َﺘﻠ َﺔ اﻟ ُﺤ َﺴ ْ َﻋﻠ ْ ﻪ ﱠ‬
ُ‫اﻟﺴﻼم‬
ِ
‫ﻗﺎﺗﻠﻮں ﭘﺮ ﻟﻌﻨﺖ ﮐﺮ‬ ؑ ‫اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ‬:‫اے ﷲ‬
O Allah, (please do) curse the slayers of al-Husayn, peace
be upon him.
‫ﻣﺆﻟﻒ ﮐﮩ ﮨ اس ﺣﺪ ﺚ ﻇﺎ ﺮ ﻮﺗﺎ ﮐﮧ ﯾﻮم ﻋﺎﺷﻮر ﺎ روزە رﮐﮭ‬
‫ﺎر ﻣ ﺟﻮ ﺣﺪﯾﺜ آﺋ وە ﺳﺐ ﺟﻌ اور ﺑﻨﺎو ﮨ اور ان ﮐﻮ ﺟﮭﻮﭨﻮں‬
: ‫ﺣ ت رﺳﻮل ﻃﺮف ﻣ ﺴﻮب ﮐ ﺎ‬
The summary of the aforementioned worthy essay of
`All¡mah al-Majlis¢ is that the reports that are ascribed to
the Holy Prophet (PBUH) concerning the merits of the tenth
of Muharram, the Day of Ashura’, are all in all fabricated.

‫اﻟﻠ ُﮭ ﱠﻢ ان ﮬﺬا ُﯾ ْﻮ َم ﺗ َ َ ﺖ ِﺑﮧ َﺑﻨ ْﻮ ا َﻣ ﱠ ِﺔ ۔‬

O Allah, verily, the descendants of Umayyah saw a good
omen in this day

This topic has been discussed at length by the author of Shifa’


al-Sudur at explaining the famous Ziyarat Ashura’ and,
precisely, the statement that reads, “O Allah, verily, the
descendants of Umayyah saw a good omen in this day... etc.”
The summary of the author’s explanation is as follows:
‫ﺑﻨﺎ ﭘﺮ ﺎﺑﺮﮐﺖ ﺗﺼﻮر ﮐﺮ ﺗﮭ‬ ‫ﻣﻨﺤﻮس دن ﮐﻮ ﭼﻨﺪ وﺟ ﺎت‬ ‫ﺑ اﻣﯿﮧ آج‬
‫۔‬
The Umayyads used to regard this day as good omen and they
thus used to do many things on it.
﴾۱﴿
‫ﺑ اﻣﯿﮧ آج دن آﯾﻨﺪە ﺳﺎل ﻟ ﻏﻠﮧ و ﺟ ﺲ ﺟﻤﻊ ﮐﺮ رﮐﮭ ﮐﻮ‬
‫ ﭼﻨﺎﻧﭽﮧ‬،‫ﻣﺴﺘﺤﺐ ﺟﺎﻧﺎ اور اس ﮐﻮ وﺳﻌﺖ رزق اور ﺧﻮﺷﺤﺎ ﺎ ﺳ ﺐ ﻗﺮارد ﺎ‬
‫اﮨﻠﺒ ﺖ ﻃﺮف ان اس زﻋﻢ ﺎﻃﻞ ﺎر ﺎر ﺗﺮد ﺪ اور ﻣﺬﻣﺖ ﮔ‬

(1) They betook as custom on this day storing up the annual
nutriment considering such to achieve happiness, good
livelihood, and luxury up to the next year. In order to deny this
bad habit, the Holy Imams (`a) warned against it in many
narrations.
﴾۲﴿
‫ﺑ اﻣﯿﮧ آج دن ﮐﻮ روز ﻋ ﺪ ﻗﺮار د ﺎ اور اس ﻣ ﻋ ﺪ رﺳﻮم ﺟﺎری‬
‫ ا ﮏ دو‬،‫ﮐ ۔ ﺟ اﮨﻞ و ﻋ ﺎل ﻟ ﻋﻤﺪە ﻟ ﺎس و ﺧﻮرا ﻓﺮا ﻢ ﮐﺮﻧﺎ‬
‫ﻣﻠﻨﺎ اور ﺣﺠﺎﻣﺖ ﺑﻨﻮاﻧﺎ وﻏ ە ﻟﮩﺬا ﯾﮧ اﻣﻮر ان ﭘ و ﺎروں ﻣ ﻋﺎم ﻃﻮر‬
‫ﭘﺮ راﺋﺞ ﻮ ﮔ ۔‬
(2) They considered the tenth of Muharram a feast day on
which they would commit to the manners of celebration, such
as conferring upon the family members with whatever they
need, procuring new clothes, having one’s mustache cut,
trimming the nails, and shaking hands with each other as well
as other norms.
﴾۳﴿
‫وﺿﻊ ﮐ‬ ‫ﺣﺪﯾﺜ‬ ‫ﺑﮩﺖ‬ ‫ﻓﻀ ﻠﺖ ﻣ‬ ‫اﻧﮩﻮں آج دن ﺎ روزە رﮐﮭ‬
‫اور اس دن روزە رﮐﮭ ﭘﺮ ﻋﻤﻞ ﭘ ا ﻮ ۔‬
(3) They and their fans have been observing fasting on the
tenth of Muharram after they have fabricated numerous
traditions entailing the significance of observing fasting on this
day.
﴾۴﴿
‫اﻧﮩﻮں ﻋﺎﺷﻮر دن دﻋﺎ ﮐﺮ اور اﭘ ﺣﺎﺟﺎت ﻃﻠﺐ ﮐﺮ ﮐﻮ ﻣﺴﺘﺤﺐ ﻗﺮار‬
‫ﻧ آج دن‬، ‫د ﺎ اس ﻟ اس ﻣﺘﻌﻠﻖ ﺑﮩﺖ ﻓﻀﺎﺋﻞ اور ﻣﻨﺎﻗﺐ ﮔﮭﮍ ﻟ‬
‫دﻋﺎﺋ ﺑﻨﺎﺋ اور اﻧﮩ ﻋﺎم ﮐ ﺎ ﺗﺎ ﮧ ﻟﻮﮔﻮں ﮐﻮ ﺣﻘ ﻘﺖ‬ ‫ﻟ ﺑﮩﺖ‬ ‫ﭘﮍﮬ‬

‫ﻧﺠﺎت ﺣﺎﺻﻞ ﻮ ﻌ ﯾﮧ ﺳﺐ اﻣﻮر آج دن وﻗ ع ﻣ آ ۔ ﺗﺎ ﻢ ان ﺎ ﯾﮧ‬
‫۔‬ ‫ﮐﮩﻨﺎ ﺳﻔ ﺪ ﺟﮭﻮٹ ﺳﻮا ﮐﭽﮫ ﻧﮩ‬
(4) They and their fans have declared that it is recommended
to supplicate Almighty Allah on this day. In order to confirm
this forgery, they have invented many merits for this day,
included them with fabricated supplications, and taught them
to the miscreants of the nation so that they would confuse
people and make the matter ambiguous for them. The pro-
Umayyad orators used to declare before people that a good
event occurred to each Prophet on this day, such as that the
fire that Nimrod the tyrannical ruler provoked in order to throw
Prophet Abraham (`a) there was extinguished on the tenth of
Muharram! Pharaoh who chased Prophet Moses (`a) was
drowned on the tenth of Muharram! Prophet Jesus was saved
from crucifixion on the tenth of Muharram!([4])

‫ ﺧﺪا ﻗﺴﻢ ﯾﮧ اﻣﺖ اﭘ ﻧ ﷺ ﻓﺮزﻧﺪ ﮐﻮ‬: ‫ﺗﻤﺎر ﺳﻨﺎ وە ﮐﮩ ﺗﮭ‬
‫اور ﺧﺪا دﺷﻤﻦ اس دن ﮐﻮ ﺎﺑﺮﮐﺖ دن‬ ‫دﺳ ﮟ ﻣﺤﺮم دن ﺷﮩ ﺪ ﮐﺮ‬
‫اور ﯾﮧ ﺎﺗ ﷲ ﻋﻠﻢ ﻣ آﭼﮑ‬ ‫ﺗﺼﻮر ﮐ ﮟ ﯾﮧ ﺳﺐ ﺎم ﻮ ﮐﺮ ر‬
ؑ ‫ ﺟﻮ ﻣﺠﮫ ﮐﻮ اﻣ اﻟﻤﺆﻣﻨ‬، ‫ﻣﻌﻠﻮم‬ ‫ﮨ ﯾﮧ ﺎت ﻣﺠﮭ اس ﻋﮩﺪ ذر‬
‫ﻃﺮف ﻣﻼ‬
Supporting this, Shaykh al-Saduq has reported that Jibillah al-
Makkiyyah said that she heard Maytham al-Tammar—may
Allah sanctify his soul—saying, “By Allah I swear, this nation
will kill the grandson of their Prophet on the tenth of
Muharram. The enemies of Allah will betake that day as
blessed day. This shall inevitably take place, because it has
been already cited in the eternal knowledge of Almighty Allah.
I knew these facts from my master and the commander of the
believers (namely, Imam `Ali ibn Abi-Talib) (as).”
‫روز‬ ؑ ‫ﮐﮧ وە ﻟﻮگ اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ‬ ‫ﻣﯿﺜﻢ ﻋﺮض‬ ‫ﺟ ﻠﮧ ﮐﮩ ﮨ ﮐﮧ ﻣ‬
‫؟‬ ‫ﺷﮩﺎدت ﮐﻮ ﮐﺲ ﻃ ح ﺎﺑﺮﮐﺖ ﻗﺮاردﯾﮟ‬
Jibillah (the reporter) then said that she asked Maytham, “How
come that the people will betake the day on which al-Husayn
(as) will be slain as blessed day?”
‫ﺟﺲ ﻣ‬ ‫ﺣﺪ ﺚ وﺿﻊ ﮐ ﮟ‬ ‫ﺗﺐ ﻣﯿﺜﻢ رو ﭘﮍ اور ﮐﮩﺎ ﻟﻮگ ا ﮏ ا‬
ؑ ‫ت‬
‫آدم ﺗ ﮧ‬ ‫ﺣ‬ ٰ ‫ﮐﮧ آج ﺎ دن وە دن ﮐﮧ ﺟﺐ ﺣﻖ ﺗﻌﺎ‬ ‫ﮐﮩ‬
‫ﻗﺒﻮل ﻓﺮﻣﺎ ۔‬
As he wept, Maytham answered, “They will fabricate traditions
and will falsely claim that Almighty Allah accepted the
repentance of Prophet Adam on the tenth of Muharram.
‫ﺗ‬ ‫ﻗﺒﻮل‬ ‫ﺗ ﮧ ذی اﻟﺤﺠﮧ ﻣ‬ ‫ان‬ ٰ ‫ﺣﺎﻻﻧﮑﮧ ﺧﺪا ﺗﻌﺎ‬
The truth about this is that Almighty Allah accepted the
repentance of Prophet Adam (`a) in Dhi’l-hijjah.
‫ﺎ ﺮ‬ ‫ﭘﭧ‬ ‫ﺲ ﮐﻮ ﻣﭽﮭ‬ؑ ‫آج دن ﺧﺪا ﺣ ت ﯾﻮ‬ ‫وە ﮐﮩ‬
‫ﻧ ﺎﻻ ﺗﮭﺎ‬ ‫ﻧ ﺎﻻ ﺣﺎﻻﻧﮑﮧ ﺧﺪا ان ﮐﻮ ذی اﻟﻘﻌﺪە ﻣ ﺷ ﻢ ﻣﺎ‬
They will falsely claim that Almighty Allah saved Prophet Jonah
from the fish that had swallowed him on the tenth of
Muharram. The truth about this is that the event was in Dhi’l-
Qa`dah.
‫ﺟ ﮑﮧ‬، ‫ﮐﺸ ﺟﻮدی ﭘﺮ ر‬ ‫ت ﻧ ؑح‬ ‫وە ﺗﺼﻮر ﮐ ﮟ ﮐﮧ آج دن ﺣ‬
‫ ذی اﻟﺤﺠﮧ ﮐﻮ ر ﺗ‬۸۱ ‫ﮐﺸ‬
They will falsely claim that the Ark of Prophet Noah rested on
Mount Judi on the tenth of Muharram. The truth about this is
that the Ark rested on the tenth of Dhi’l-hijjah.
‫ت ﻣﻮ ٰؑ ﮐ ﻠ در ﺎ ﮐﻮ ﭼ ا‬ ‫ﺣ‬ ٰ ‫ﮐﮧ آج دن ﺣﻖ ﺗﻌﺎ‬ ‫وە ﮐﮩ‬
‫ﻮا ﺗﮭﺎ‬ ‫ﺣﺎﻻﻧﮑﮧ ﯾﮧ واﻗﻌﮧ ر ﯿﻊ اﻻول ﻣ‬،
They will falsely claim that Almighty Allah split the river for
Prophet Moses to cross on the tenth of Muharram. The truth
about this is that the event occurred in Rabi` al-Awwal... etc.”
‫ﺧﻼﺻﮧ ﯾﮧ ﮐﮧ ﻣﯿﺜﻢ ﺗﻤﺎر اس روا ﺖ ﻣ ﻣﺬﮐﻮرە ﺗ ﺤﺎت وە ﮨ ﺟﻮ اﺻﻞ‬
‫ﻣ ﻧﺒﻮت و اﻣﺎﻣﺖ ﻋﻼﻣﺎت ﮨ اور ﺷ ﻌﮧ ﻣﺴﻠﻤﺎﻧﻮں ﺑﺮ ﺣﻖ ﻮ‬
‫روﺷﻦ دﻟ ﻞ ﮨ ۔ ﮐﯿﻮﻧﮑﮧ اس ﻣ ان ﺎﺗﻮں ﺎ ذﮐﺮ ﺟﻮ ﻮ ﭼ ﮨ اور ﻮ‬
‫ﺎوﺟﻮد ان ﻟﻮﮔﻮں‬ ‫ر ﮨ ﺲ ﯾﮧ ﺗﻌﺠﺐ ﺎت ﮐﮧ اس واﺿﺢ ﺧ‬
‫اﭘ و ﻢ و ﻤﺎن ﺑﻨﺎ ﭘﺮ ﻗﺮاردی ﻮ ﺟﮭﻮ ﺎﺗﻮں ﻣﻄﺎﺑﻖ دﻋﺎﺋ ﺑﻨﺎ‬
‫ﮨ ﺟﻮ ﻌﺾ ﺧ اﺷﺨﺎص ﮐﺘﺎﺑﻮں ﻣ درج ﮨ ﮐﮧ ﺟﻦ ﮐﻮ ان‬
‫اﺻﻠ ﺖ ﺎ ﮐﭽﮫ ﺑ ﻋﻠﻢ ﻧﮧ ﺗﮭﺎ ۔‬
This narration of Maytham al-Tamm¡r has, openly and plainly,
confirmed that such traditions were invented and fabricated
against the Holy Infallibles (as). It is also one of the signs
indicating the true Prophethood of the Holy Prophet
Muhammad (as) and the true Divinely commissioned
leadership of the Holy Imams (as). Finally, it acts as one of the
proofs on the veracity and honesty of Shi`ism. In this
narration, Imam `Ali (as) undoubtedly predicted that which we
have been experiencing and witnessing, which is the
fabrications and the forgery of lies against the Holy Infallibles
(as).

Despite all that, the most surprising thing is to notice that


some people contrive a prayer comprising the
aforementioned lies and some unskilled and inexpert writers
add such a fabricated supplication to their books that take
their way to the publics who will then recite it, although it is
surely forbidden to believe in such a false supplication,
because it is fabricated. Beginning with statements of praise
and glorification of Almighty Allah

‫ﺟﻮ‬ ‫ اس ﻃ ح اس وە ﻇﻠﻢ ﮐ ﺎ‬، ‫ﻢ ﻋﻘ ﺪە ﮔﮭﮍی‬ ‫ﺎ ان ﮐ‬
‫ﺑ اﻣﯿﮧ ﻇﻠﻢ ﮐﻮ اﻧﺘﮩﺎئ ﺗﮏ ﭘﮩﻨﭽﺎ دﯾﺘﺎ ﯾﮧ ﺑ ﺎن ﮐﺘﺎب ﺷﻔﺎئ اﻟﺼﺪور‬
‫ﻣﻨﺪرﺟﺎت ﺎ ﺧﻼﺻﮧ ﺟﻮ ﯾﮩﺎں ﺧﺘﻢ ﻮ ﮔ ﺎ ۔‬
Undoubtedly, this supplication was invented by the Nasibis of
al-Madinah, the Khawarij , or their likes who imitated the
Umayyads in their wrongdoings against the Household of the
Holy Prophet.
‫اﮨﻞ ﺣﺮم اﻧ دﺧ ان‬ ؑ ‫ﺑﮩﺮﺣﺎل ﯾﻮم ﻋﺎﺷﻮر آﺧﺮی وﻗﺖ ﻣ اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ‬

‫۔ﺟﺐ ﮐﮧ وە دﺷﻤﻨﻮں ﮨﺎﺗﮭﻮں ﻗ ﺪ ﻣ ﮨ‬ ‫ﮐ ﻼ ﻣ ان ﭘﺮ ﮐ ﺎ ﺑ ﺖ ر‬

ZIYARAH OF CONDOLENCE TO HOLY PROPHET (S)
AND HIS IMMACULATE PROGENY
: ‫آﺧﺮ وﻗﺖ ﮐﮭﮍا ﻮ ﺟﺎ اور ﯾﮧ ز ﺎرت ﭘﮍ‬ ‫ﯾﻮم ﻋﺎﺷﻮر‬
After that, it is recommended to stand up and address and
offer the following form of Ziyarah:
‫ ﺟﻨﺎب‬، ؑ ‫ اﻣ اﻟﻤﺆﻣﻨ‬، ‫ﯾﻮم ﻋﺎﺷﻮر آﺧﺮ وﻗﺖ ﮐﮭﮍا ﻮ ﺟﺎ اور رﺳﻮل ﷲ‬
‫ ان ﺳﺐ ﭘﺮ‬، ‫ﮨ‬ ؑ
‫اﺋﻤﮧ ﺟﻮ اوﻻد اﻣﺎم ﺣﺴ ؑ ﻣ‬ ؑ
‫ﺣﺴﻦ اور ﺎ‬ ؑ
‫ اﻣﺎم‬،‫ﻓﺎﻃﻤﮧ‬
: ‫ﺳﻼم ﺑﮭﯿ اور ﮔ ﮧ ﺣﺎﻟﺖ ﻣ ان ﮐﻮ ﭘﺮﺳﮧ دے اور ﯾﮧ ز ﺎرت ﭘﮍ‬
After that, it is recommended to stand up and address and
offer condolences to the Holy Prophet, Imam Ali, Lady Fatimah
al-Zahra’, Imam al-Hasan, and the Holy Imams from the
offspring of Imam al-Husayn - the chief of martyrs - on these
astounding misfortunes with passionate heart and teary eyes.
Then, it is recommended to address them with the following
form of Ziyarah:

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Adam the choice of Allah.

َ ْ ‫ﻟﺴ َ ُم َﻋﻠ‬
