Chapter A
Design Philosophy
This report summarizes the design philosophy, primary assumptions, methods of analysis / design,
performance criteria adopted for the structural engineering design of the BURNT STORE LAKES PROJECT,
(BUILT AREA 4112.3 Sq-ft for Each unit), FLORIDA CITY
The aim is to formulate a structural system which can adequately resist loads due to gravity, wind
with maximum efficiency. The primary structural members consists of 6" & 4" Precast walls
to resist the vertical and lateral loads. LGS Roof Truss system provided to act as diaphragm in order to
transfer the lateral load within the horizontal plane to the shear walls.
The report lists down all the design standards, codes, technical literature and materials that have been
adopted for the preliminary design and is the basis for subsequent detailed design.
For structural analysis of the structure under gravity & wind, a three dimensional elastic structural
finite element model has been made using ETABS software. The shear walls are also
designed using Eriksson software. Foundation is designed using SAFE software.

Test for Enclosed Building: Ao < 0.01Ag or 4 sf, whichever is smaller
Test for Open Building: All walls are at least 80% open.
Ao ≥ 0.8Ag
Test for Partially Enclosed Building: Predominately open on one side only
Input Test
Ao 500.0 sf Ao ≥ 1.1Aoi NO
Ag 600.0 sf Ao > 4' or 0.01Ag YES
Aoi 1000.0 sf Aoi / Agi ≤ 0.20 YES Building is NOT
Agi 10000.0 sf Partially Enclosed
Conditions to qualify as Partially Enclosed Building. Must satisfy all of the following:
Ao ≥ 1.1Aoi
Ao > smaller of 4' or 0.01 Ag
Aoi / Agi ≤ 0.20
Where:
Ao = the total area of openings in a wall that receives positive external pressure.
Ag = the gross area of that wall in which Ao is identified.
Aoi = the sum of the areas of openings in the building envelope (walls and roof) not including Ao.
Agi = the sum of the gross surface areas of the building envelope (walls and roof) not including Ag.
Test for Partially Open Building: A building that does not qualify as open, enclosed or partially enclosed.
(This type building will have same wind pressures as an enclosed building.
NOTE:
See figure in ASCE7 for the application of full and partial loading
of the above wind pressures. There are 4 different loading cases.

|Warnings & Notes |
|Note [3]|Design strength is based on a reduced maximum concrete strain to avoid steel slippage or rupture. See |
| | Flexural Design Detail Report and Help file's Technical Background for more information. |
| * |Minimum Flexural Strength is 1.2 Mcr or 4/3 Mu [ACI 318-14::9.6/Option F10] |
|ØMn(As,min) is the factored flexural strength based on the minimum required area for tensile steel required by the |
| selected code. |
| Note |A 1% overstress is allowed without a warning to allow for accuracy of numerical methods (Option G3). |
|See the Flexural Design Details text report for more details. |

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
| Note |Shear steel requirements for pre-tension bursting have been included (calculation |
| | option S8). |
| Note |A 1% overstress is allowed without a warning to allow for accuracy of numerical |
| | methods (calculation option G3). |
| * |Portion of the total stirrup area required to resist torsional shear flow (one leg |
| | around periphery). |
| ** |Allowable reduction within flexural compression zone [ACI 318-14::9.5.4.5]. Limited to|
| | half the Total and Al minimum. |
|See the Shear Design Check Details text report for more details. |

DESIGN FOR 8" THICK VERTICAL PRECAST SANDWICH WALLPANEL DESIGN TYPE
D Run4
Design Notes:
* Wallpanel is located near grid "3" and b/w Grids "E & F" @ North Elevation.
* Critical Wallpanel is designed for Roof Truss load and C&C Wind Loads.
* Assume the Wall panel is pinned at Roof deck Level.
* Design will be valid for 8" Thick Sandwich WP.
* 44" Critical width of panel is considered as design section Conservatively.
* 4" Interior Wythe is designed as Load bearing for Vertical Load ( DL + Live) and Wind load on conservative side
Ignoring composite behaviour of the section (also a separate calculation is attached For composite action for
reference).
Design section is considered as 8" x 21.75"
DESIGN LOADS:
Live Load (Refer Lintel beam design concise LB-05) = 0.93 Kip
(P4) Components & Cladding Wind (Pressure) = 64.00 psf (Refer Wind Load Calculation Sheets)
(For an exposed area of 24.60 Sq. Ft) = 1.81' x 11.50' = 20.82 sq.ft
(Postive Zone 4 & 5)
Wind Pressure at the areas exposed in plf = 64.00 psf x 1.81' = 115.8 plf
(P5) Components & Cladding Wind (Suction) = 84.00 psf (Refer Wind Load Calculation Sheets)
