Piping Painting Procedure

1. Scope

This procedure applies to mechanical chiller water system. Piping and other works
associated with the installation provided by the Lead management shall be painted.
Identification bands and symbols shall also be provided.

Where specified to be painted, metal surfaces shall be primed, given one coat of approved
undercoat and one finish coat of approved full-gloss synthetic enamel as a minimum.

All painting shall be carried out before erection on site, and this requirement shall be
strictly complied with.

2. Purpose

2.1 Main purpose of the painting procedure is to control the storage, surface
preparation, primer coat, intermediate coat, final coat and safety precaution.

2.2 To control, monitor the movement and use of hazardous materials and substances
or chemical on site.

2.3 To ensure workers are aware of the hazards when dealing and handling of
chemical or working in a chemical environment.

2.4 Paint Data Sheet shall be submitted for approval. Manufacturer's


recommendations as to application and system, combination of paints shall be
followed. All superimposed primers and paints shall be compatible.

4. Paint Preparation and Application

4.1 Submission of Paint Products for approval; only approved paint product can be
used.

4.2 Paints and primers shall be delivered to the job site in the original package
bearing the manufacturer's name and brand.

4.3 All paints shall be stored, thinned, applied and cured strictly in accordance with
manufacturer's recommendation.

4.4 No mixing of different manufacturer's paints will be permitted without written


permission from the System Owner.

4.5 Painting shall not be done in rainy or damp weather.

5. Painting Procedure for pipes

5.1 Surface preparation

5.1.1 Surface to be painted shall be free of all grease, oil, and rust and loose mill
scale. All oil, grease and salts must remove thinner wiping.

5.2 Processing Rules

5.2.1 The coating material only applied to surface that are dry, clean and free of
grease.

5.2.2 The drying times between applications of the individual coats must be
strictly observed
5.2.3 Coating only be performed in dry weather and at temperatures above 5
deg C

5.2.4 Transportation of the coated parts may commence only after the coating
has hardened and dry.

6. Testing & Test certification


The stated required layer for each coat is to be checked and verified by the QC
inspector from Lead Management.

8. Repair of Damaged Paint Surface

When shop paint has been damaged in transit or where damage has occurred to field
coats, all damaged and loosely adhering paint shall be removed and the surface
thoroughly cleaned. Edges of the breaks shall be feathered and the designated number of
primer and finish coats shall be applied.

The color of the finish paints shall be in accordance with the schedule provided by M+W
Group

9. Responsibilities

9.1 Manager shall ensure the employees and contractor understands the hazards and
risk control of the chemical usage. They shall approved the Risk control
measures prior of work commencement.

9.2 They shall provide all the required PPE for the job. They shall review and update
Safe work practices.

9.3 Project Engineer and Site supervisor to ensure all the safety measures are taken
prior to instruct the workers to work on height.

9.4 Employees shall be aware of body harness provision and M+ W Group safety
requirement working at height of 1.8 meter regulations and buddy system when
working.

9.5 Project Engineer to ensure that proper working platform is provided for all
employees under his /her charge.

9.6 Project Engineer and safety supervisor shall ensure that all electrical equipment
and appliances are LEW approved type.

9.7 Project Engineer to ensure that all paint comes with updated MWZ Coshh form
and Safety data sheet.

10. Safe work procedures receiving of chemicals

10.1 Inspect the conditions of containers, drums, carboys before accepting


them. Check for damages or unusual dents, bulge, or leaks on the containers.

10.2 Ensure containers are correctly labeled.

10.3 Ensure all chemicals come with a copy of Safety data sheet (MSDS).

10.4 PPE to be used when handling and using of Chemicals

10.5 Know the name of chemical you are handling and obtain, read and understand
the MSDS.

10.6 Read all instructions on containers. Use chemical according to the MSDS and
work procedure.

10.7 Prepare yourself to handle or use the chemical by wearing the required PPE.

10.8 Avoid splash /spill when pouring or transferring chemical. Immediately clean
up any spills.

10.9 Dispose of chemical waste according to adopted procedure.

10.10 Know the location of emergency showers and first aid treatment in case of
chemical contact.

11. Personal Protection equipment

11.1 Personnel protection equipment shall be providing to all employee:

A) Hard Hat,
B) Body Harness with absorber device and double lanyard.
C) Safety glasses and safety glove
D) Safety Shoe with steel toe cap
E) Ear plug or Ear muff for noisy work area
F) Face masks requirement.
