CHAPTER 4 – Specific Issues in Science, Technology, and Society

Lesson 4– The Nano World

ACTIVITY

- Give examples of fields of study or applications where size and weight of materials are
key considerations. Explain why.
-Aerospace Engineering: In the aerospace industry, such as in aircraft and spacecraft
design, size and weight play a crucial role in determining fuel efficiency, range, and
payload capacity. Lighter materials are preferred to reduce fuel consumption and
increase the payload capacity, allowing for more passengers or cargo.

Enumerate and explain the applications of nanoparticles in the following areas.

Electronics - Nanoelectronics: Nanoparticles are used

to create electronic components on a
nanoscale, leading to smaller, faster, and
more efficient devices.
- Nanoparticle-based Conductive Inks:
Used in printed electronics for flexible
displays and circuits.
- Nanoparticle-enhanced Batteries:
Nanoparticles improve battery
performance, increasing energy storage
capacity and charging rates.

Medicine
- Drug Delivery: Nanoparticles act as
carriers to deliver drugs to specific
targets in the body, improving drug
efficacy and reducing side effects.
- Imaging and Diagnostics: Nanoparticles
are used as contrast agents in medical
imaging techniques such as MRI and CT
scans for better visualization of tissues
and organs.
- Theranostics: Combining therapy and
diagnostics, nanoparticles can be
designed to simultaneously deliver
treatment and monitor its effectiveness.

Communication - Nanoscale Transistors: Nanoparticles

enable the development of smaller and
more efficient transistors for high-speed
communication devices.
- Nanophotonics: Nanoparticles are used to
manipulate light at the nanoscale,
facilitating faster data transmission in
optical communication.

Space Science - Nanosatellites: Nanoparticles and

nanomaterials are used in the
construction of miniaturized satellites
(nanosatellites) for space exploration and
data collection.
- Solar Sails: Nanoparticles can enhance
solar sail performance, enabling
spacecraft propulsion using solar
radiation pressure.

Agriculture - Nanopesticides: Nanoparticles are used in

pesticides to improve their delivery,
adhesion, and targeted release, reducing
environmental impact and increasing
efficiency.
- Soil Remediation: Nanoparticles assist in
soil remediation by removing pollutants
and enhancing nutrient availability.
Environment - Nanofiltration: Nanoparticles are used in
water purification processes to filter out
contaminants and impurities, improving
water quality.
- Air Filtration: Nanoparticles in air filters
can capture and neutralize harmful
pollutants, improving indoor air quality.
