1. Beaty, A., & Griffith, Theanne. (2022). The Science of Baking (Ada Twist, Scientist: The Why
Files). Amulet Books.

This is a book all about the science behind baking. It breaks down all the

ingredients and what affect they have on the baking process. Each ingredient

causes the reaction to become a chemical or physical property of the baked

goods. It also includes experiments that how the effect of not adding specific

ingredients to the mix. This connects baking to full chemical reactions that

change both properties.

Anticipation Guide Strategy


When reading over this book, anticipation guides will help students be engaged even

though it is a kids book. It is a way to get students to think about what they have learn

previously about chemical reactions and changes. If there is no strategy attached to this book,

students would have more of a desire to not pay attention. This book walks through how each

part of baking is science and how it affects the way things bake. Students should have some

prior knowledge on how different things are taken into consideration when cooking but have

never thought of it as chemistry. The anticipation guide will help reveal misconceptions that

have been made previously and specifically address the common misconceptions. The after part

allows students to see what the correct answer is and provide a description of why if needed.
2. Sterer, Gideon., & Cho, Lian. (2021) It Began with Lemonade. Penguin Publishing House.

This is a book about a little kid who was bored on a hot summer day. She wanted

to sell lemonade. She made the perfect mixture and set off to sell lemonade. She

could not find an empty street around her house anywhere. Her lemonade stand

began to roll away from her. It ended up landing near the river where she was

able to sell to one client. Students can see which parts of the lemonade make it a

homogeneous mixture and what makes it heterogeneous.

Mentimeter Online Discussion

Using the online discussion strategy for this tradebook, it allows students to place their

thoughts and answers on the board anonymously. This book will be used to try and deceiver

which of the parts of the lemonade making is chemical properties/reactions and which are

physical. This strategy would go well with this book because of there being so many different

aspects of making lemonade and chemical reactions that the discussion strategy allows

students to be slowly walked through each part by starting with simpler questions for the to

answer. These progressively get harder, and they all will relate to the final questions at the end

which are which are chemical properties, chemical reactions, and physical properties.

3. Chad, Jon. (2023). Science Comics: The Periodic Table of Elements: Understanding the
Building Blocks of Everything, First Second.
Chemistry experiments have gotten placed in the hands of a bad guy. Mel can

use her knowledge of the periodic table to stop the evil experiments. The book

helps quickly understands all the elements on the table. Each elements can be

see how it behaves in actual experiments and it offers trends and predictions of

what the next element will be. This is the best one that connects. Students will

need to know how to predict characteristics and elements on the exams.

Vocabulary Demonstration Word Strategy

This strategy will work very well with this tradebook. Since this book walks through each

of the elements and where they are on the periodic table, the different lists of words will

require students to pay close attention to the test and where the elements are placed on the

periodic table. Each list of words are related in some way to their place on the periodic table.

The lists could include families, trends, columns, rows, and classifications. The vocabulary that is

used in the lectures and in the tradebook need to be known. The lost are not straight forwards

so the students must critically think about how they all relate to each other.

These are an explanation of each term and picture with great descriptions about

the different bonds. It also includes links to topics thar relate to the current content as well as

real life examples of polar and non-polar molecules.

Unsent Letter Strategy

This strategy allows student to become extremely creative. They will have to write a

letter coming from either a polar or nonpolar bond to the opposite. They must talk about

aspects of their types of bonds and their relationships with the opposite kind. They will also

have to include how they learned about their type of bond and how they will teach the

opposite type about themselves. This strategy is ideal for this text because it is so full of content

and important information that needs sorted through. Writing a letter to the opposite type of

bond makes students have to thoroughly explain which they are.

Science of Everyday Life. Greystone.

Chemistry is everywhere. It is in every think we eat, make and even in the alarm

clock that wakes us up in the morning. There is chemistry in our stress hormones

and baking. This book breaks it all down into simple terms and ideas that allow

children to see how science is in their lives every day. Each of these everyday life

items, both mixtures will be included and could be determined by the students.

Graphic Organizer

Each student/group of students are given a piece of the book to read. The students will

use a graphic organizer to organize their topic within their section. The organizer will help

students know what to talk about and what part of the section are important. Since the

sections can be confusing, each group will then share their graphic organizers with the rest of

the class.
