Nosedive Paragraph

In computers class we watched a series called Black Mirror. The episode we watched was called

Nosedive. In the episode it showed a situation where an app took over the world. The app gave

you an average rating based on how many stars people would give you (1-5 stars) I wouldn’t say

I enjoyed this episode, but I wouldn’t say I didn’t enjoy it either. I have mixed feelings about it.

The episode has a good point, but the way they addressed the point was a little odd. The main

character was named Lacie. She was super focused on her rating all the time and then she

found out she could get a discount on her house if her rating went up more so that made her

even more focused on her rating. Everyone only cares about their rating in this world and

people are a lot more judgemental towards each other based on ratings. If this app was in the

world we live in today, I would not get it because I think that getting to know someone is more

important than what other people think of them. Different people think different things so

some one could encounter a person, get five stars by them, do the same thing to someone else

and get 1 star. The people with the lowest stars in the fil are the most likeable. Like the trucker

lady for example, she has a 1–2-star rating but she is still friendly despite what she has been

rated in the past. This kind of relates to today because you may not look like a nice person, but

you could be. People judge by looks in our society, and ratings in theirs.
Some of the scenes in this film I found quite weird or even disturbing. Like when Lacie would

laugh at herself in the mirror because of her rating or when she started going crazy trying to get

to the wedding. This app clearly drives people insane because they lose connection to what’s

important all because of a number that appears by their face. High or low, Lacie still didn’t seem

like a person in our society because of the rating. She acted very different around people with

high numbers and was disgusted by lower numbers at the start of the movie. When she was at

home with her brother alone she acted different so she’s clearly acting like someone she is not

and it isn’t healthy. You should be able to be yourself without consequences. Even in our world

people can sometimes get bullied for being themselves, so imagine what it felt like for their

society.
