SCHOOL
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the (Pre Calculus (Senior High School) Module on Hyperbolas: Vertex at
(h,k) !

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the Learner:

Welcome to the (Pre Calculus) Module on Hyperbolas: Vertex at (h,k) !

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an
active learner.

2. Which of the given equations with vertices of (-

3. Which of the given equations with foci of (0,-6) and (0,6)?

4. Which of the given equations with asymptote of yx?

5.Which of the given equations with vertices (-10,0) and (10,0)

LESSON

This time let us consider a hyperbola with vertex (h,k) with transverse
axis parallel or horizontally and vertically coinciding with center coordinate
axes but not in the origin.

Thus, the standard equation of hyperbola with vertex at (h,k) can be

written in any of the following two(2) cases.

If the transverse axis is horizontally coinciding with the x-axis whose

vertex is not on the origin or parallel to the x-axis, then the standard
equation is

x2h2 

y2k2 1 a
b
While if the transverse axis is vertically coinciding with the y-axis
whose vertex is not on the origin or parallel to the y-axis, the standard
equation is

y2k2 x2h2
1 a b

Note the following observations:

 if ( xh )2 comes first before ( yk )2 or when( xh )2 is positive ,then the
transverse axis is horizontal and the opening of the curve is right side
and left side. Also,

 if h0and k0 or k0, then the transverse axis is parallel to

the x-axis.

 If h0or h0 and k0, then the transverse axis coincides

with the x -axis.

 If ( yk )2comes first before ( xh )2 or when( yk )2 is positive, then the
transverse axis is vertical and the opening of the curve is upward and
downward.

 h0and k0 or k0, then the transverse axis coincides with

the y-axis.

 If h0or h0 and k0, then the transverse axis is parallel to

the y-axis.

best moment , feelings, people , places and events we experience with
them . Also, photographs connect us to our past and bring back the best

As a student, what is the best photograph you had with your family?
Look for it, paste it on a sheet of paper and write a catchy title for the short
story that you will write below it.
