BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Definition of Sociolinguistic

Sociolinguistics is a branch of linguistics that studies the relationship between language

and society. This discipline investigates how social factors, such as social status, ethnic group,
gender, social class, and other cultural factors, influence language use and language variety
within a community.

Sociolinguistics views language as a social phenomenon that cannot be separated from its social
context. This branch studies how language is used by people in daily interactions, how language
variations are formed, how language is used to convey social identity, and how language changes
occur in different communities.

1. Code Mixing (Code Village):

Code mixing occurs when someone uses two or more languages or language variations in one
utterance or utterance. In code mixing, the use of the language is usually not clearly separated,
but combined in one sentence or utterance.

Code mixing can occur in a variety of social contexts, such as in informal conversations,
ethnic groups with their language peculiarities, or in interactions with people who have different
cultural or linguistic backgrounds. Code mixing is often used as a form of identity expression or
as a means of communication with groups who speak different languages.

2. Code Switching:

Code switching occurs when a person consciously or unconsciously switches from one
language or language variety to another in the same conversation or utterance. In code switching,
the switch between languages or language variations occurs explicitly and is usually preceded by
an identifier or signal indicating the change.Code switching can occur for various reasons, such
as to express cultural identity, emphasize certain meanings or nuances, or as a communication
strategy in situations that require the use of different languages. Code switching can also be used
to show membership groups or create social ties with the other person.

I
3. Intrasentential Code Mixing/Switching: Occurs when a change between languages or
language variations occurs within a single sentence.
4. Intersentential Code Mixing/Switching: Occurs when a change between languages or
language variations occurs between different sentences.
5. Tag-Switching: Occurs when speakers combine tags in different languages into their
sentences.
6. Metaphorical Code Switching: Occurs when speakers use different languages or
variations of language to create rhetorical or creative effects in their conversations.

2. Factors Causing the Occurrence of Code Mix

The occurrence of code-mixing is due to the reciprocal relationship between role

(speakers), language form and language function. This means that speakers who social
background, tend to choose certain forms of code-mixing to support certain functions (Suwito,
1985: 78). Meanwhile, according to (Suandi, 2014: 143- 146), the factors that cause code-mixing
are the limited of use of the code, the use of terms that are more popular, the speaker and the
speaker/s personality, the speaking partner, the place of residence and the time when the
conversation takes place, and the mode of conversation, the topic, function and purpose, the
variety and level, the subject matter, to evoke a sense of humor and for prestige.

3. Data from video

Starting from a boy who was in America who wanted to meet his beautiful friend named
Maudy Ayunda who was studying at Stanford San Francisco, the boy and his family of Maudy
Ayunda fans After meeting, the boy asked how he was using English and Maudy also replied in
English, they talked about the last time they met while making a video on YouTube, a Wilaim
boy named nebeng boy, communicated with each other on walks, and occasionally Maudy
Ayunda used Indonesian.

Boy asked about education at school/university why does Maudy like education at all
schools Maudy did that I did business and education and Maudy returned to being a student

I
againBoy asked what building this was, Maudy answered that this was the Stanford campus but
not part of the business school and Maudy rarely went there, and when Maudy went there just to
enjoy a break from studying and going out to do business, and Maudy showed that this was a
beautiful place, and the place was usually used for picnic people There they students opened
books and there they studied, and they went there on Sundays so the place was not too crowded,
the boy asked the class schedule every day, Maudy said it depended, sometimes Maudy had class
8.am then there were 3 or 4 classes in 1 day until the afternoon like high school kids every day,
it's not always mandatory for collectors Maudy gave a statement that it is mandatory to attend
every day, boy said this is like a dream they are living you are realizing your dream, to be honest
they are very blessed and very lucky. I understand that this is like a once in a lifetime
opportunity, and Maudy has burdens and responsibilities answer too.

Every year there are only 2 to 3 Indonesian children every year usually only 1 Indonesian
child is accepted, Maudy makes the best of this opportunity, yes I have to be a few about the
positive effects, especially for Indonesia, and Maudy Ayunda has a PPI collection Maudy made a
small dinner for her international friends and Maudy made Indonesian food. Maudy cooked
rendng, liwet rice and fried chicken, they were surprised Maudy said I can't cook, and they
continued the conversation with how many people know people who know you here, Maudy
answered from an ig follower his 10 million know him there Maudy felt incestuous because there
were smart people there and Maudy said we couldn't feel great, they continued on to the park,
and the people there liked the sun, and the boy leaked that the cameramen were fans of Maudy
Ayunda, and they sat on the grass where in the garden while continuing the conversation, they
were talking about a cameraman named Delia, she is an Indonesian celebrity who likes you,
Maudy answered that you were very sweet and they laughed together.

Maudy is an insecure person, and insecure, because she has to learn a lot of recipes from
other people's experiences, and that is motivation for me and that is very important for young
people, and sometimes her dreams are only about going forward and walking, they continue
walking.

And they will be cycling, we can rent bicycles at my hostel, you are here far away from
Indonesia, you are pursuing your education and what if someone in Indonesia knows that that is
someone named Maudy Ayunda, friends can still co-connect with me on social the media, and

I
when I come back and no one knows anymore Ill be okay Because it's not for fame, that I'm in
the industry team because of the creative process, and they pretend to be Caucasians and use the
code switching method, switching languages from mixing to switching, they use English And
they are back again using mixed code mixing of 2 languages Maudy shows a place that is usually
used to gather called thiovel, lots of tourists play here, Maudy's business is traveling,They rented
bicycles and talked back, I did a lot of sports but in terms of eating like a boarding school boy or
an ordinary girl, sometimes Maudy makes her own food, it's impossible to eat salmon every day,
it's broke.Boy asks what is the definition of success? Maudy I don't know I hope independence in
work is very important, I'm young in spirit, and you are an inspiring person.

Discussion

after knowing some of the meanings of code mixing and code switching above, let's enter
into the discussion of the video, and I found several types of code mixing and code switching
from the video such as:

1. Insertion

Insertion of material (lexical items or entire constituents) from one language into
a structure of the other language. Insertion is the constraint in the terms of structural
properties of some base or matrix structure. The process of code mixing is conceived as
something skin to borrowing and insertion of an alien lexical or phrasal category into a
given structure. The difference is simply the size and type of element inserted noun,
adjective, verb.

No. Insertion
1. Kalo di Oxford ga selalu wajib kalo untuk college
2. Manasin something
3. Then kadang” mimpi itu tentang berjalan maju aja terus tanpa harus tahu persis
4. Jadi kita kaya harus pake cap
5. Aku passionated

I
2. Alternation

Alternation between structures from languages. Alternation is the constraint of mixing in

terms of compatibility or equivalence of the languages involved at the mix point, and clause.

No. Alternation
1. Orang sini, tahu who you are ga sih?
2. You know, gini aku selalu ngomong bahwa intinya aku tuh
orangnya minderan
3. I feel like, oke berarti kalo setiap tahun
4. How many Indo kids? Sekarang Boy?

From the data , the utterance is code-mixing because the speaker inserts elements of
another language (English) in the form of the clause “Who you are”,”You know”,”I feel
like”, and ”How many Indo kids?”

CHAPTER III
