ADJECTIVES. (ADD + JECTIVE)

• Adjectives are those words which add some thing to


‘jectives’ i.e. SUBJECTS and OBJECTS. Since Nouns
and Pronouns are used both as Object and Subject,
hence ADJECTIVE is that word which describes or
limits noun or a pronoun. It tells something more
about the noun or the pronoun.
KINDS OF ADJECTIVES.
• Adjective of Quality.
• Adjective of Quantity.
• Adjective of Number.
• Distributive Adjectives.
• Demonstrative Adjectives.
• Possessive Adjectives.
• Participial Adjectives.
• Interrogative Adjectives.
• Exclamatory Adjectives.
1. ADJECTIVE OF QUALITY.

• Words which describe the Quality of a Noun or


Pronoun are called Adjective of Quality.

• a. I have a nice doll.


• B. Anand is a good boy.
2. ADJECTIVE OF QUANTITY.

• Words which describe the quantity of the noun or


pronoun is called Adjective of Quantity.
• An adjective which answers for “how much” is a
Adjective of Quantity. Much; little; enough; half;
sufficient etc. are used as Adjective of Quantity.

• a. I have much work to do.


• b. A little knowledge is dangerous.
3. ADJECTIVE OF NUMBER.

• Adjective of Number are sub-divided into two


types. They are:

• A. Definite Numeral Adjectives.


• B. Indefinite Numeral Adjectives.
A) DEFINITE NUMERAL ADJECTIVE.

• Definite Numeral Adjectives are again sub-divided into


two types. They are:

• A. Cardinals: Eg. One; Two; Three etc.


• B. Ordinals: Eg. First; Second; Third etc.

• Eg. There are thirty five students in our class.


Mohan is the 1st rank holder.
Cardinals denotes ‘how many’, where as ordinals denotes
order of things in a series.
B. INDEFINITE NUMERAL ADJECTIVES.

• The Numeral Adjective which does not denote an exact


number of a person or thing is called Indefinite
Numeral Adjective.

• Words such as many; some; much; little; few; several;


none; all etc. are used as Indefinite Numeral Adjective.

• A. Many people attended the class.


• B. Few women can keep secret.
4. DISTRIBUTIVE ADJECTIVES.

• “Distributive” means one by one separately.


Words such as every; either; neither etc. are used
as Distributive Adjectives.

• A. Each row has ten chairs.


• B. There are trees on either side of the road.
5. DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES.

• The adjective that points out a person, thing or animal is called


Demonstrative Adjectives.

• Words such as this; that; these; those; such are used with nouns
as Demonstrative Adjectives.
• A. This book is mine.
• Note: A, an, the are used as demonstrative adjectives.

• An apple a day keeps the doctor away.


6. POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES.

• Words such as my; our; your; his; her; their; its


etc. are used as Possessive Adjectives.

• A. This is my wallet.
• B. Its tail is long.
7. PARTICIPIAL ADJECTIVES.
• Words such as “ing” form (present participle) &
“ed” form (past participle) used to describe the
nature of the noun are called Participial
Adjectives.

• A. This is a swimming pool.


• B. This school is only for coloured people.
8. INTERROGATIVE ADJECTIVES.

• Words such as what; which; whose can be used


as Interrogative Adjectives used with nouns to
ask questions.

• A. What kind of man are you?


• B. Whose bicycle is this?
9. EXCLAMATORY ADJECTIVES.

• The “what” is used as Exclamatory Adjective to


express a strong feeling.

• A. What an idea!
• B. What a wonderful feeling!
