FIELD STUDY 1 NARRATIVE REPORT

(5-day observation)
Field Study 1 is all about the learner’s development and environment. We, as FS students, have
the chance to have an experiential process of witnessing and exploring the characteristics and
behaviors of learners in an authentic learning environment. Because of this, we are able to
recognize the characteristics and needs of diverse learners.

Through observation, we learned that every student differs in their characteristics as well as their
daily needs. This field study observation helps us a lot to understand the real situation when it
comes to teaching. We also learned that being a teacher is difficult yet enjoyable, especially as an
aspiring elementary teacher.

Our first day of observation started on October 19, 2023. It was an overwhelming feeling when I
saw the children at Bagumbayan Elementary School. Every staff member, teacher, and student is
very hospitable. The teacher guided us through this observation, and it feels nice knowing that
every student is gladly welcoming us. We were first assigned to Grade 6, where the room is
pleasant to the eyes, students are very active, and teachers are teaching well. You can clearly tell
that the teacher is doing well when the students are participating. They use different learning
materials, and we learned a lot from them.

On the second day, I was assigned to the lower grade, which is grade 3. I noticed that, unlike in
the upper grades, the students here are very energetic and playful. The surroundings are vibrant,
there are a lot of teaching aids from the current lessons, and the teacher used a lot of instructional
materials because they say that when it comes to lower grades, students are likely to get bored
easily, so we must be more creative in teaching to get the attention of the students. Though it was
a lower grade, I was shocked to see how active the students were in participating.

On the third day, we spend the day observing the school itself and looking for facilities and
resources in the school. The school has a library, canteen, faculties, clinic, and so on.

On the fourth day, I was assigned to the grade 1 level. And I noticed that it is more difficult than
the higher grade levels. You must pay attention to every student; they also have different
behaviors when it comes to discussion that I think may make it harder for the teacher.

Last day of observation, day 5. It is quite different because our last day is the student's
examination. We don't do much because students need to focus, and we just observe how they
take the exam and how the teacher handles them.

Through this 5-day observation, we learned a lot, not just from teachers but also from the
experiences that we had with the students. It gives us ideas on how the real situation is going. It
may be difficult, but as an education student, I am more excited to feel and to experience
teaching students. This observation helps us to be more responsible and creative, to have more
patience, and, of course, to be a great teacher. A big applause to all the teachers at Bagumbayan
Elementary School for their outstanding cooperation and for guiding us through this observation.
