7 APPARATUS REQUIRED
All the apparatus used for conducting plate load test shall conform to JGS 1521-2012. The major
apparatus required for conducting plate load test as per JGS 1521-2012 is shown in Figure 4. The
description of the apparatus as per JGS 1521-2012 is explained in the next section.
Figure 4
(Typical Test set-up for Plate load test with Apparatus)
7.1 Loading Plate
Loading plate of minimum 300 mm diameter and minimum 25 mm thickness as per Clause 4.2 of JGS
1521-2012. However, the contractor is proposing the loading plate of 300 mm diameter with 25 mm
thickness for conducting plate load test. The loading plate is provided with reinforcing ribs as per JGS
1521-2012.
The jack is the device that gives the actual load applied to the loading plate. In general, the jack loading
capacity should be 1.2 times the maximum test load as per Clause 4.3.2 of JGS 1521-2012. The jack
shall also be capable of smooth loading and unloading, and it shall be able to maintain a specified load
during testing.
Figure 5
(Typical Set-up of Hydraulic Jack along with Loading plate and dial gauges)
The support post is the component that transmits the load produced by the jack against the reaction
members (Excavator 210) to the loading plate. It shall have sufficient load-bearing capacity and
stiffness with respect to the maximum test load. The support post may be provided depending up on the
site requirement.
The reaction force for jacks shall be supported by reaction force components. When the test is
conducted outdoors, anchors or an actual load shall be used to form the reaction structure. The reaction
force components by actual load shall be sufficiently stable with respect to movement and toppling
under such a load. Excavator 210 is used as the actual load and its capacity shall be at least 1.2 times
the maximum test load as per Clause 4.3.5 of JGS 1521-2012. Reaction is offered through stand in
excavator.
As per clause 5.3.5 of JGS 1521-2012 and as per site conditions, if the real load pedestal cannot be
placed at a distance of five or more times the diameter of the loading plate from the center of the loading
plate, displacement gauges should ideally be placed near the loading plate and the reference point to
enable the status of the ground shall also be checked. As the proposed plate load test is being carried
out on rock surface for which no disturbance or movement of ground is anticipated the above method
is proposed at this particular location at Ch. Km -205.447.
The loading gauge shall have capacity at least equal to the maximum test load. As per Clause 4.4.2 of
JGS 1521-2012, the accuracy of the loading gauge shall be within ± 2.5 % of the maximum test load.
The pressure gauge or loading gauge shall ideally have capacity in the range of 1.2 times to 5 times the
maximum test load. Either load cell or proving ring or the like is often used a loading gauge. The loading
gauge or pressure gauge shall be capable of measuring with a precision of 1%.
Figure 6
(Typical Pressure/Loading gauge)
7.6 Displacement Gauges
Minimum four number of dial gauges shall be used as displacement gauges installed at regular intervals
around the edge of the plate. Displacement gauges shall have sufficient range with respect to the
anticipated displacement in response to the maximum test load. It shall have a precision that enables
readings to be displayed down to 0.01 mm or less. It shall be able to withstand vibration and
temperature variation, etc. The displacement gauges shall ideally have a range of at least 30 mm as per
Clause 4.4.3 of JGS 1521-2012.

(Typical Dial gauge with stand)
7.7 Stopwatch
8 TEST DETAILS
The test shall be conducted at chainage km 205.447 km at an elevation of proposed foundation level of
the pier.
8.2 Test load/Pressure
The maximum test load that is applied is equal to the ultimate bearing capacity required for the
particular test location. The UBC is checked for 1500 kN/m2 at this test location as per Standard
drawings of Employer’s Requirements.
The proposed loading plate size is 300 mm diameter with 25 mm thickness. The loading plate is
provided with reinforcing ribs as per JGS 1521-2012.
The proposed loading platform for conducting plate load test is Excavator 210 to provide reaction to
the hydraulic jack.
9 TEST PROCEDURE
9.1 General
For conducting plate load test, the loading plate shall be placed at the foundation level and the load is
applied by means of hydraulic jack. The reaction to the jack is provided by the Excavator 210. The
Excavator 210 (as loading platform) is used to provide reaction. The settlement of the plate is measured
by four dial gauges which are placed at the ends of the plate. The dial gauges are fixed to the reference
beam which remain undisturbed during the test. The generalized procedure for conducting plate load
test is presented in the flow chart in Figure 8.
Figure 8
(Flowchart for generalized procedure for conducting plate load test)
This section describes the process of open excavation for plate load test.
➢ Before the excavation for the plate load test is commenced, the site shall be cleared of
vegetation, brushwood, stumps of trees etc. The working area is thus established on the site and
the levels from nearest benchmark shall be transferred to particular location, establishing
temporary benchmark.
➢ Open excavation method shall be carried out using excavators for soil strata and rock breakers
for rocky strata. Open excavation shall facilitate the conduction of plate load test which is used
to ensure the ultimate bearing capacity.
➢ Detailed site survey shall be conducted to record existing ground level conditions and to mark
the area required and the obstructions. All the required equipment, manpower and supervisory
staff shall be mobilized.
➢ Excavation shall be carried out as per the design profile using Excavators/Rock breakers (if
required). At locations where the water table is above the founding level of excavation,
dewatering shall be carried out. Dewatering shall be carried out according to the scheme suitable
for the existing soil profile, soil strata and discharge. The excavated materials suitable for
backfilling shall be carried out at the designated locations.
➢ Excavation inside/near any part of the existing services, structures shall always be properly
fenced and marked with suitable warning boards or lights. Measures shall be taken to safeguard
the utilities encountered during excavation. Material shall not be stacked near the edge of the
excavation or opening in the ground.
➢ Movement of equipment, trucks, and storage of excavated materials shall be such that it will not
obstruct any construction activities of adjacent structures. Wherever required, safety barriers
during excavation shall be provided.
Figure 9
(Typical Cross section showing the sloped arrangement to reach test level)
9.2.1 Excavation in Soil
The soil profile as mentioned in the borelog shall be referred for excavation depth. The Borelogs are
attached as Annexure -III and open excavation is possible for shallow depth as per Borelogs. Safe slope
shall be maintained during excavation in soil. Soil properties and layer thickness shall be chosen from
the nearest available bore log.
9.2.2 Excavation in Rock
Rock breakers shall be used for carrying out excavation in rocks. Boulders shall be handled carefully
while disposing the excavated rock mass. Water seepage if any shall be controlled by sump pumping.
9.3 Dewatering
This is the most common method of dewatering as gravity is the main playing force.
i. Sump is created in the excavated area into which the surrounding water converges and
accumulates facilitating easy discharge of water through robust solid handling pumps.
ii. Since the bottom of the sump is situated at a level lower than that of the excavation bottom, it
will abridge the seepage way along which groundwater from outside seeps into the excavation
zone and as a result the exit gradient of the sump bottom will be larger than that on the
excavation surface.
iii. If the excavation area is large, several sumps may be placed along the longer side or simply use
a long narrow sump which is called a ditch. Whereas in our case excavation area for plate load
test is very minimal, dewatering shall be carried out with single sump system. The water
collected in the sump shall be pumped out periodically using submersible pump.
Figure 10
(Typical arrangement of sump pumping method)
9.4 Detailed Procedure for conducting plate load test
1. The identified test location shall be sealed and barricading to be provided. The test is conducted
at the proposed founding level. To reach the founding level sloped arrangement is made from
the ground level. Safety to be ensured for the slope provided during execution.
2. The surface area of the test ground shall be levelled over an area at least three times the diameter
of the loading plate from the centre of the plate as per Clause 5.2.1 of JGS 1521-2012. A final
levelling operation shall be carried out prior to the test. The bottom of the test location shall be
coinciding with the level of the foundation.
3. If in case water table is above the level of foundation, water level to be lowered. The water level
shall be lowered below the level of foundation.
4. The ground shall be levelled and the loading plate shall be placed over it.
5. At the proposed test location, stand in Excavator 210 is used as the loading platform.
6. The CG of the loading plate shall coincide with the CG of the Excavator 210 platform.
7. An initial seating pressure of 7 kPa is applied as a preliminary loading to improve the contact
between the ground and the loading plate. The seating pressure is released before starting the
test. In order to increase contact between the loading plate and the test ground, a thin layer of
dry sand may be spread over the test ground.
8. The load for first stage is then placed on plate and settlements are recorded by means of dial
gauges.
9. The load increments shall be one-eighth of the ultimate bearing capacity
10. Displacement measurements at every loading step shall be recorded at 0, 1, 2 and 5 minutes and
thereafter for every 5 minutes up to 30 minutes as per Clause 5.4.4 of JGS 1521-2012.
11. The load at every step during loading is maintained for 30 minutes approximately.
12. After reaching the maximum test load, the unloading shall be carried out in stages with holding
time of 5 minutes for every stage.
1. During the preparation of test surface, any parts of the rock that have been loosened by
excavation or any damaged rock shall be removed. The surface shall be levelled to eliminate
significant irregularities. The minimum extent to be finished is around 1.5 to 2 times larger than
the diameter of the loading plate as per Clause 5.2.2 of JGS 1521-2012.
2. In order to ensure proper contact between loading plate and test rock surface, a cement paste or
other facing material shall be applied to the test ground before placing the loading plate
3. The load at every step during loading is maintained for 5 minutes approximately instead of 30
minutes.
The loading steps, rate of loading & unloading and holding time for loading & unloading step is
mentioned in the Table 2.
Figure 11
(Typical Loading pattern for loading in stages (JGS 1521-2012))
As indicated in Table 2, the maximum test load is applied in eight stages. The loading pattern is
indicated in the Figure 11. The load increment for every step is presented in Table 3.
10 TEST COMPLETION
As per Cl 5.4.5 of JGS 1521-2012, when one of the following conditions is met, the final unloading
step of the test shall begin and the test shall then be concluded.
1. When the final stage in the set loading pattern has been reached and the prescribed time of load
maintenance has expired.
2. If the displacement suddenly increases drastically and when it becomes difficult to maintain the
load or apply new loading.
3. If cracks appear in the surrounding ground and the loading plate has tilted significantly, or
otherwise if the ground has been judged to have reached the fracture point.
The interpretation of plate load test results based on the recorded data shall be as per clause 6 and 7 of
JGS 1521-2012. A separate report shall be submitted to Engineer after completion of the test.
11.1 Method of processing test results for determining UBC of the ground
Interpretation of test results shall be done as per Clause 6 of JGS 1521-2012. For the determination of
bearing characteristics of ground, loading pressure versus settlement (P v/s S) curves shall be prepared.
As per clause 6.1.3, UBC is taken as the loading pressure corresponding to the failure state of the
ground. If no failure of ground is confirmed even after reaching maximum test load, the maximum test
load is taken as UBC.
If multiple failure states are confirmed, smallest of the loading pressure values shall be taken as the
UBC.
a) Loading pressure at the point at which settlement increases dramatically until it becomes
generally parallel to settlement axis in ‘P v/s S’ curve (Figure 13 curve A).
b) If (a) cannot be clearly determined and as long as the settlement of the plate does not exceed
10% of the plate diameter, UBC shall be interpreted to be the smaller of below
i. Loading pressure at which settlement linearly increases on ‘P v/s S’ curve (Figure 13
curve B)
ii. Loading pressure at which settlement becomes parallel to settlement axis on ‘log P v/s
S’ curve (Figure 14)
c) If it is difficult to determine either (a) or (b) and it is confirmed that settlement of the plate
exceeds 10% of the plate diameter, loading pressure corresponding to the point at which
settlement is equal to 10% of plate diameter is considered as UBC.
d) If there is a sudden and dramatic change in state of loading plate and surrounding ground and it
begins to be difficult to maintain the load or apply a new staged load, the corresponding loading
pressure is taken as UBC.
12 BACKFILL
