V. Procedures Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

A. ELICIT Good afternoon STEM 12-A! Good afternoon, Ma’am.

I am Demarie M. Junas, your teacher for

General Chemistry.

Kindly go back to your proper seats and

pick up the scattered papers under your
chairs.

Are you all settled? Yes ma’am.

That’s good! Let’s begin our lesson with a

prayer.

May I ask, Pia to lead the prayer? (student’s prayer)

Mister Secretary who is absent today? No one is absent Ma’am.

Okay very good. How are you today? We’re good ma’am.

That’s nice!

Before we start, let me first remind you

once again of our classroom rules.
Kindly read our set of classroom rules?
Yes, Eira?  Listen and follow instructions.
 Be attentive and respectful.
 Treat others kindly.
 Participate in class activities.
 Raise your hand if you want to
recite or say something.
Thank you for reading.

Is that clear? Yes ma’am.

Okay, before we proceed to our new
topic, let’s have first a quick review on
your previous topic discussed by teacher
Marina.

I prepared an engaging an activity

entitled, “Like and Dislike”.

I will present some questions about your

last topic with teacher Marina and you are
going to identify if it is true or false by
raising like emoji as true; otherwise
dislike emoji.

Let’s start.

1.Organic and natural compounds are the

two main types of compounds.

Why did you raised your dislike emoji, Ma’am, the two main types of
Shanlee? compounds are organic and inorganic.

Very good!

2. Alkanes came from two main sources:

natura and synthetic.

Correct!

3. The general formula for alkanes is

CnH2n+2.

4. Alkanes has a high melting point?

Why did you raised your dislike emoji,

Unshay Dy?
Ma’am, alkanes has a low melting
point.
Excelent!

5. The condensed structural formula for

methane is CH4.

That’s right!

Alright, class! It’s good to know that

you’re able to recall your previous lesson
and now you are ready to move on to our
new lesson. But before that, we will have
a game first.

B. ENGAGE What we have here is a different image of

memes connected to alkene which
I told you to have an advance reading.

I will show you some meme pictures, and

then you are going to explain what you
understand or observe from the images.

Is that clear class?

Alright! Yes ma’am.

So, for the first meme, who wants to

explain their interpretation of this
picture?

Yes, Mylene?

People with dyslexia might struggle to

write and spell words like "alkane" and
"alkene" because they find it hard to
process sounds and recognize words

Excellent! how about the second meme?

Yes, Annamae? The ending "-ane" is suffix of alkane

and the airplane is indicating a single
bond. On the other hand, the "-ene" is
suffix of alkene and the two airplane is
representing a double bond.

Very good! how about this one, who want

to share their viewpoint on the
interpretation of this image?

Yes, Pearl?
Ma’am based from the picture it seems
that the man got confused because the
octene has a 8 carbon atoms while in
the month of October has a 10 months
and soon.

That’s right! how about the fourth meme?

Ma’am, pants + ene = pantene. The ene
Yes, Rizalyn?
is suffix of alkene.

Great! And for the last meme, who wants

to describe what they see in this image.
Ma’am the barrier represents the single
Yes, Dominic? bond of alkane, and the double bond of
alkene.

Very good!

Class, what can you derived from that

activity?

Yes, Aira Jane?

Ma’am the task involves contrasting
That’s right! So our topic for today has alkanes with alkenes.
something to do with alkenes.

Let’s now proceed to our next activity.

But before we proceed to our next

activity, what are we expected to
accomplish today?

Kindly read our learning objectives for

today’s lesson.

Yes, Jemma?
At the end of the discussion, students
are expected to:
 identify alkenes based on their
properties and characteristics;
 write the correct chemical formula
and name for alkene; and
 appreciate the use of alkenes to
common household.
Thank you for reading, Jemma.

C. EXPLORE To spice up our discussion, let’s have

activity called “Picture analysis ”

INSTRUCTION:

 I'll be displaying images/model of

alkenes, and then you are going to
describe and compare their
structures.

Who wants to describe and compare the

first two image, in relation to your last
discussion about alkane?

Yes, Marie? Ma'am, the first image illustrates an

alkane structure of hexane, whereas
the second illustrates an alkene
structure of hexene.
Correct! What can you tell me about the
second image? Can you compare the
locations of double bonds?

Yes, Dem? Ma’am, based from the picture the

location of double bond in the first
picture is different from the second
picture.

Very good! The two picture shows an open

structural formula of 1-pentene and 2-
pentene. The only difference is the
placement of double bond.

Let’s now proceed to the last image. What

Ma’am, the first picture is a chemical
can you observe about how it is written.
formula of ethene, while the second
picture is an open structural formula of
Yes, Leishane?
ethene.

You’re right!

This activity will be your guide and warm

up as we go through with our discussion
which is alkene. This will be used to
identify them later on.

Let’s now move on to our lesson proper.

D. EXPLAIN In this lesson we will explore another type

of hydrocarbon which is the alkene.

You already discussed one hydrocarbon

which is alkanes compound, lets now
proceed to alkenes.

Who among you has an idea about

alkenes?
Yes, Rholyn? An alkene is a kind of chemical
compound. It has a special feature
called a double bond between carbon
That’s right! alkenes are unsaturated atoms
hydrocarbons, containing double bond
between two carbon atoms.

What do we mean by unsaturated The term "unsaturated" indicates that

hydrocarbons? these compounds have double or
triple bonds between carbon atoms.
Correct!

General Formula of Alkenes - CnH2n

- where n is the number of carbon atoms
in a molecule.

Take this image as your guide.

Let’s try this example:

CH3 – CH2 - CH2 - CH = CH2

How many carbon atoms are there? 5 carbon atoms ma’am.

What alkene has 5 carbon atoms? Pentene ma’am.
That’s right! So, now we are going to find
on how to compute the molecular formula
of alkene.

CH3 - CH2 - CH2 - CH = CH2

= CnH2n
= C5H2(5)
= C5H10

Who wants to try this one?

Yes, Kyle?

CH3 - CH2 - CH = CH2 CH3 - CH2 - CH = CH2

= CnH2n
= C4H2(4)
= C4H8
Correct! How about this?

Yes, Jaira?

CH2 = CH - CH2 – CH2 – CH2 - CH2 – CH3 CH2 = CH - CH2 – CH2 – CH2 - CH2 – CH3
= CnH2n
= C7H2(7)
= C7H14
Okay then, let’s proceed to naming of
alkenes.

Alkenes are named in much the same way

as alkanes, except we change the -ane
ending to -ene.

Naming of Alkenes
1. Prefixes
2. Prefixes + ene
3. Parent chain – longest continuous
chain.
4. Number the parent chain
according to what is nearest to the
double bond.
5. Number the carbon atom-
substituent.
6. Number the parent chain – double
bond.

No. of Prefixes Prefixes +

carbon ene
atoms
1 meth methene
2 eth ethene
3 prop propene
4 but butene
5 pent pentene
6 hex hexene
7 hept heptene
8 oct octene
9 non nonene
10 dec decene

Let’s do this example:

CH3 - CH2 - CH = CH - CH2 - CH3

Or

H H H H
I I I I
H-C–C-C=C–C–C–H
I I I I I I
H H H H H H
Parent chain: heptene
IUPAC name: 3-heptene

Some textbook might write it this way “

hept-2-ene”, so you can also write it that
way.

How about the next example?

The carbon atom with a red highlight is

what we call substituents.

CH3
I
CH3 - CH2 - CH = C - CH2 - CH3

Parent chain: hexene

IUPAC name: 3-methyl- 3-hexene

Do you understand?
Yes ma’am.
Alright! Who wants to try this example?
Yes, Kevin?

Please come forward and write your

answer on the board.

1.CH3 - CH = CH - CH3
2-butene
That’s right! But what if I put a
substituent in here?
CH3
I
2.CH3 - CH = C - CH3
2-methyl- 2-butene
Correct!

Who wants to try this another example?

Yes, Samantha?

CH3
I
3.CH3 – CH2 - C = CH - CH3
3-methyl-2-pentene
Okay good! How about this one? This is
what we call IUPAC name.

4. 3-octene
CH3 – CH2 – CH = CH – CH2 - CH2- CH2 – CH3

Very good! Do you already know on how to Yes ma’am.

name alkenes?

Physical properties of alkenes

 Non polar molecules

What do we mean by non- polar

molecules? Ma’am non- polar molecules are
insoluble and do not dissolve in solvents
like water.

That’s right! But alkenes can be soluble in

non-polar organic solvents such as
benzene and acetone.

 They are less dense than water

How would you define a substance that is

less dense than water? For example ma’am is when we when
we add an alkene to a container of
water, it will float rather than sinking
Correct!
to the bottom.
 Low melting and boiling points

Who could provide an explanation behind

substances that has a low melting and
boiling points? Low melting and boiling points indicate
that a substance can readily change
from a solid to a liquid at low
temperatures and vice versa.
Do you understand the physical properties
of alkene? Yes ma’am.

Okay then, let’s proceed to the uses of

alkenes.

In manufacturing, alkenes find many

diverse application in industry. They are
used in the synthesis of alcohols, plastics,
detergent, and fuels as starting materials.

What do we mean by starting materials?

Starting materials" are the first things

That’s right! you use when making something. It's
In medicine, alkenes are used in synthesis
like the basic ingredients or parts you
of drugs. Alkenes are used to make need at the beginning before you
steroids, anti-inflammatories, and create or do something.
cholesterol lowering agents, and also used
to make drugs for cancer and other
diseases.

And finally, alkenes are important

research tools in organic chemistry. The
study of alkenes has led to important
discoveries such as the development of
new drugs.

Do you understand class?

Let’s move on to the sources of alkenes.

Yes ma’am.
So, alkenes are produced from the alkanes
in crude oil by a process of cracking.

Cracking uses heat and catalyst to

decompose alkanes. The cracking process
is important because it turns less useful
alkanes into more useful alkenes like
ethene, the starting material for many
plastics.

Do you have any questions, clarifications

and reactions?

None ma’am.
E. ELABORATE Since you don’t have any questions, then
it’s time for me to assess if you really
learn something from our discussion.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. I have prepared a list of
statements that you need to
determine as either true or false.
2. The same group that we had last
meeting.
3. You can answer within a given
time (30 seconds per question).
4. Write TRUE for every correct
statement; otherwise FALSE.
5. Write your answer on the
illustration board, and after 30
seconds raise your answers.
6. And kindly explain why did you
choose that answer.
7. Give yourself one (1) point for
every correct answer.
8. Throughout the quiz, I encourage
you to have fun, enjoy the
experience and learn from it.

Are my instructions clear? Yes ma’am.

Okay good!
Let’s begin the TRUE OR FALSE QUIZ!

1. Alkenes have single bond between FALSE

carbon atoms just like alkanes.
Alkenes have at least one double bond,
not a single bond.

You’re right!

2. Alkenes are saturated hydrocarbons. FALSE

Ma’am, alkenes are unsaturated

hydrocarbons.

Correct!

3. Ethene is an example of an alkene. TRUE

Ma'am, ethene (C2H4) is a basic

example of an alkene containing a
carbon-carbon double bond.

Very good!

4. Alkenes are non-polar molecules. TRUE

Ma’am alkenes are non- polar

molecules because they are insoluble
and do not dissolve in solvents like
water that makes them non-polar.

5. Alkenes are named in much the same FALSE

way as alkanes.
Ma'am, alkenes are described similarly
to alkanes, with the only difference
is that the -ane ending is replaced with
-ene.

Nice input!

It seems that you really understand our

lesson today.

Okay, let’s proceed now to your self

check to assess if you really understand
