1. Purpose
1.1 The purpose of this procedure is to provide the minimum requirements for the
fabrication and erection of Platform and Ladder work, to meet the contractural
specifications and requirements of a project, Basrah Refinery Upgrading Project.
2. Scope
2.1 This procedure applies specifically to Basrah Refinery Upgrading Project and
covers the Platforms, Handrails and Ladders for Equipment of structural steelwork.
3. Definitions

5. Shop Fabrication
5.1 Materials and Material handling
5.1.1 All material, pre-fabrications and components shall be inspected on receipt in
accordance with work instruction HSS-000-13525-0001_A_Fabrication
Specification for Equipment Platform and Ladder and SS-000-15200-0101_04
_Quality Control Requirements to Vendor. Material certificates shall be
submitted during inspection of material.
5.1.2 All materials shall be kept free from dirt, grease and other foreign matter and
shall be protected from corrosion. All materials shall be properly laid down on
wooden supports.
5.1.3 All material shall be ·in accordance with the spec. SS-000-15200-
0102_04_ Material Certification and Traceability, and approval drawings.
Upon receipt of raw material at shop, they shall be inspected as per Material
Certificates and Specification.
5.2 Fabrication
5.2.1 The fabrication of Platforms & Ladders shall conform to AWS D 1.1 and
approved drawings. Fabrication of Platforms & Ladders work shall be done at
KOVIS work shop and consist of Platforms, Stairway, Ladders, Handrails, Toe
plates, supports and any other items.
5.2.2 Welder shall be qualified in accordance with approved Welding Procedure
Specification and AWS D 1.1.
5.2.3 All welding procedure qualification shall be in accordance with work instruction
of Project Specifications and meet the requirements of AWS D.1.1. Prequalified
welding procedures shall be used whenever possible.
5.2.4 Welding consumables shall be controlled in accordance with work instruction as
below.
Arc welding electrodes shall be in accordance with AWS as :
Manual shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) : E70xx series.
Semi-automatic flux cored wire Arc welding (FCAW) : E71T series.

3. Fit up outer and inner rings
4. Fit up side frames
5. Floor plate fit up
6. Fit up handrail posts
7. Fit up handrail
8. Fit up knee rail. After completion of dimensional inspection, welding shall be
carried out
9. Inspection on Trial assembling Condition with handrail & Grating
10. Dis-assembling Handrail & Grating
11. To start shot-blasting and painting works
12. Final assembly and start packing works.

6. Erection at Site
6.1 When all loads are received at site, they are correctly off loaded and suitable slings are
used and paint finishes are not damaged. All Platforms and Ladders is stacked correctly
and placed on wood off ground level.
6.2 Platforms and Ladders may be erected in individual pieces or in pre-assembled
sections. Appropriate methods of handling, Lifting and fixing shall be employed to avoid
any damage to Install work.
6.3 Permanent bolting shall not be carried out, until corrected positioning and alignment of
structural members has been archived. If necessary, Temporary braces and guys shall
be used to minimize erection stress.
6.4 Bolting
6.4.1 Bolt holes shall be drilled or throated holes. Bolting Materials shall meet the
requirements of project specification and shown on Erection Drawings.
6.4.2 Bolt:

When two ladder sections meet, it is required to connect the ladder sections together.
Use (2) two hex bolts and (2) two hex nuts and (1) one Ladder Connection Strap on
both sides of the (2) two ladder sections to make the connections.
The Platform Cage Straps have a subtle centerline bend. When installing the straps
make certain that the bend is facing outward away from the Ladder and Equipment.
