1. Purpose
1.1 The purpose of this procedure is to provide the minimum requirements for the
fabrication and erection of Platform and Ladder work, to meet the contractural
specifications and requirements of a project, Basrah Refinery Upgrading Project.

2. Scope
2.1 This procedure applies specifically to Basrah Refinery Upgrading Project and
covers the Platforms, Handrails and Ladders for Equipment of structural steelwork.

3. Definitions

5. Shop Fabrication
5.1 Materials and Material handling
5.1.1 All material, pre-fabrications and components shall be inspected on receipt in
accordance with work instruction HSS-000-13525-0001_A_Fabrication
Specification for Equipment Platform and Ladder and SS-000-15200-0101_04
_Quality Control Requirements to Vendor. Material certificates shall be
submitted during inspection of material.
5.1.2 All materials shall be kept free from dirt, grease and other foreign matter and
shall be protected from corrosion. All materials shall be properly laid down on
wooden supports.
5.1.3 All material shall be ·in accordance with the spec. SS-000-15200-
0102_04_ Material Certification and Traceability, and approval drawings.
Upon receipt of raw material at shop, they shall be inspected as per Material
Certificates and Specification.
5.2 Fabrication
5.2.1 The fabrication of Platforms & Ladders shall conform to AWS D 1.1 and
approved drawings. Fabrication of Platforms & Ladders work shall be done at
KOVIS work shop and consist of Platforms, Stairway, Ladders, Handrails, Toe
plates, supports and any other items.
5.2.2 Welder shall be qualified in accordance with approved Welding Procedure
Specification and AWS D 1.1.
5.2.3 All welding procedure qualification shall be in accordance with work instruction
of Project Specifications and meet the requirements of AWS D.1.1. Prequalified
welding procedures shall be used whenever possible.
5.2.4 Welding consumables shall be controlled in accordance with work instruction as
below.
 Arc welding electrodes shall be in accordance with AWS as :
 Manual shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) : E70xx series.
 Semi-automatic flux cored wire Arc welding (FCAW) : E71T series.

 Storage of Welding Electrodes


Welding electrodes that have been removed from the original package
shall be protected and stored so that the welding properties are not
affected. Electrodes shall be dry and baked in accordance with welding rod
control manual.
5.2.5 All fabricated items shall be identified by punching drawing number, item
number etc. prior to release for painting / galvanizing. Galvanizing items shall be
inspected at Galvanizing work shop.
5.2.6 Painting and coating systems shall be in accordance with the project
specifications and comply with the requirements. The approved paint system
summary, the surface preparation and the painting / coating application shall be
in accordance with procedure SS-000-13A00-0001_03_General Specification
for Painting.
5.2.7 Storage at shop and site shall be such a way to allow draining of rain water.
5.2.8 Erection Drawings and Erection marks
 Erection drawings with Erection marks shall be provided by KOVIS in
Attachment. And Cutting Plan Details Parts of each separately shipped also
shall be shown on Erection Drawings.
 Erection marking shall be provided for identifying all fabricated members.
The I.D nos shall be the same as item number indicated on the shop details
drawing.
5.2.9 Packing and Marking
Packing and markings for fabricated items will be made in according with the
requirements of Project Specifications.
5.2.10 Marking and Tagging, Shop inspection, Material traceability shall be performed
in accordance with Project Specification of SS-000-15200-0101, Material
Certification and Traceability: SS-000-15200-0102_04 and SS-000-14500-
0001_01_Project Shipping and Packing Instructions to Vendors.
5.3 Trial Assembly Works
Trial assembly of platform with gratings shall be provided during fabrication and final
assembly inspection. The assembled platform with gratings shall be considered as
maximized packing size within allowances.

carried out

6. Erection at Site
6.1 When all loads are received at site, they are correctly off loaded and suitable slings are
used and paint finishes are not damaged. All Platforms and Ladders is stacked correctly
and placed on wood off ground level.
6.2 Platforms and Ladders may be erected in individual pieces or in pre-assembled
sections. Appropriate methods of handling, Lifting and fixing shall be employed to avoid
any damage to Install work.
6.3 Permanent bolting shall not be carried out, until corrected positioning and alignment of
structural members has been archived. If necessary, Temporary braces and guys shall
be used to minimize erection stress.
6.4 Bolting
6.4.1 Bolt holes shall be drilled or throated holes. Bolting Materials shall meet the
requirements of project specification and shown on Erection Drawings.
6.4.2 Bolt:

6.5 Suggested equipment for Site Erection


KOVIS recommends the following equipment and tools needed for the
construction/installation of all Platforms and Ladders:

6.6 General outside ladder assemblies


Ladder to wall connection:
When installing the first section of ladder to any Equipment whether it be unstiffened,
fully two stiffened or fully three stiffened the ladder’s left side mounting brackets will
need to be assembled on brackets.

When two ladder sections meet, it is required to connect the ladder sections together.
Use (2) two hex bolts and (2) two hex nuts and (1) one Ladder Connection Strap on
both sides of the (2) two ladder sections to make the connections.

6.8 General Ladder Cage Assembly


A typical installation of Ladder Hoops and Cage Straps is assembled during fabrication at
shop as below sketch. The ladder with cage assembly has to connected on Platform clip
by using specified bolts and nuts.

The Platform Cage Straps have a subtle centerline bend. When installing the straps
make certain that the bend is facing outward away from the Ladder and Equipment.

6.9 Platform Installation


Base platforms are located at the equipment. The base platform is designed to allow
personnel to access for maintenance and operation of equipment.
Locate and attach the posts, hand rails and top braces to the platform base are using bolts
shown on erection drawings.

Step 1 : Install Frame (Gratings shall be installed on platform before packing)

Step 2 : Install vertical bracing by using bolts & nuts

7. Touch-up Painting at Site


7.1 Painting work be applied and done at shop during fabrication in accordance with the
project specifications and comply with the requirements of SS-000-13A00-
0001_03_General Specification for Painting and Approved Painting and Rust
Prevention Procedure.
7.2 Touch-up painting work at site shall be done as same as the applied painting materials
to recover and protect damaged surface during transportation and erection.

8. Inspection after Install


8.1 All inspection after install at site shall be performed in accordance with approved
Erection Drawing prior to assembly, during assembly, during install and after install to
ensure that materials and workmanship shall meet the requirements of this procedure
and Quality Control Requirements.
8.1.1 Material inspection (material inspection before assembly)
8.1.2 Dimensional inspection (dimension check based on erection drawing)
8.1.3 Frame inspection (assembled main beam with gratings)
8.1.4 Handrail inspection
8.1.5 Assemble materials with bolts, nuts and tools inspection
