And Sew It Begins… 3 Hand-sewing
Lesson Description/Summary:
In this lesson, students will apply the knowledge about sewing equipment and try out hand-sewing. We will
go over the basic stitches and how to do them without materials, and then each student will have to complete
each stitch on a single piece of fabric. Students will also make a small button coin pouch.
Objective(s)
Students will be able to complete a running stitch, straight stitch, blanket stitch, blind stitch, and backstitch.
Students will create a design using embroidery thread.

During: Powerpoint, Google Form Bellringer, Needles, Thread, Embroidery Hoops, Fabric Squares,
Embroidery Thread, and Buttons
After: Needle Check In/Out Sheet
Time Required for Lesson:
50 minutes
Lab or Classroom Set-Up (including safety precautions):
Projector on with PowerPoint ready. Students will have to check out a needle and gather the rest of the
supplies needed. Supply list written on the board.

Have students read and annotate the sewing benefits for your mental health and wellness. Discuss in small
groups.
Lesson Content – Teaching Timeline (include formative assessment):
Check out sewing needles and additional materials needed.
Demonstrate the different types of stitch without using materials or watch a video.
Demonstration on how to tie a thread on a hand-sewing needle.
Students complete the running stitch, straight stitch, blanket stitch, and backstitch on small fabric scrap.
Students then complete an embroidery design of their choice as long as it is school appropriate.
