OPERATION ON SETS VENN DIAGRAM

SET OF OPERATIONS
 Can be defined as the operations that are performed on two or more sets to obtain a single
set containing a combination of elements from both all the sets being operated upon.

Example of Set Operation: if A= {1,2,3} B= {4,5} then AB {1,2,3,4,5}

A VENN DIAGRAM
 Illustrates the relationships between two or more data sets. Venn diagrams are especially
useful for highlighting similarities and differences and are commonly used to compare and
contrast the characteristics of different data sets.

Example of Venn Diagram:

1. All student in a class were surveyed regarding what type of pet they own at home.
20 students said they own cats and 25 students said they own dogs and 8 students said they
own both and 12 students said they own neither

A. How many students own cats but no dogs?

B. How many students own dogs but no cats?
C. How many students are in the class?

Intersection A∩B

Complement A (or AC) All elements which are not in A

INTERSECTION OF SET EXAMPLE:

 The second operation on two sets is intersection By the intersection of set A and B we mean
the set having those elements that are common to both A and B the symbol we use for
INTERSECTION (Bali nga U)
UNION OF SETS
 The union of two sets A and B is defined as the set of all the elements which lie in set A and
set B or both the elements in A and B altogether. The union of the set is denoted by the
symbol ‘U’.
EXAMPLE:
A = {1,2,3} B {3,5,7} then AUB would be the set {1,2,3,5,7}

DIFFERENCE OF SET EXAMPLE:

A {1,2,3} B {4,5}
So A-B is {1,2,3}

COMPLIMENTS OF SETS EXAMPLE:

U = {2,4,6,8,10,12}
A = {4,6,8}
A,A “= {2,10,12}
