Drone Delivery Partnership with Wilmont's

Wilmont's, a large retail pharmacy chain, is exploring delivering prescriptions and items via drones and has partnered with DroneTech, a small San Francisco drone delivery startup, to pilot the program. The project manager from DroneTech will oversee customizing their systems to integrate with Wilmont's processes for order entry, delivery notifications, and customer approvals. Both companies will collaborate on developing the necessary interfaces between their IT systems to enable customers to place drone delivery orders through Wilmont's online platforms and receive updates, while preventing direct access to DroneTech's regular customer interfaces.

1 Issue Scenario: Engineering Student Information Part 1 ISSUE SCENARIO – Part 1:

Wilmont’s, headquartered in St. Louis, MO, is a prominent retail pharmacy company in the United
States with over 8,000 stores nationwide, spanning all 50 states and employing more than 244,000
people. Recognized for its innovative business practices, the company is discreetly exploring a
cutting-edge concept – the delivery of prescriptions and drugstore items via flying drones. The
concept is not entirely new; your company, a San Francisco, CA-based small firm named
DroneTech, disclosed this approach in March and is seeking to establish partnerships with
drugstores nationwide to materialize the concept. Wilmont’s could potentially be the significant
breakthrough your firm is pursuing! George Cranston, the Vice President of Operations at
Wilmont’s, aims to initiate a pilot project to test the waters and understand its viability. He will
allocate the necessary funds and oversee all aspects of this initiative. Mr. Cranston has forged an
agreement with DroneTech CEO and founder Jordan Kempler to prototype this project in the San
Francisco area, the home base of DroneTech, where the system was originally developed.
DroneTech will tailor its systems, interfaces, and business processes to align with Wilmont’s
project requirements. You, as the Project Manager for DroneTech, will oversee the general
customization project and act as DroneTech’s liaison for Wilmont’s. You report directly to Jordan
Kempler, recognizing the visibility of this project and its potential impact on DroneTech’s future.
Although your company's drones will carry Wilmont's branding, establishing a successful long-
term relationship with a large-scale company like Wilmont’s will contribute to making DroneTech
a stable entity by all measures. II-83 Regarding DroneTech’s interface with Wilmont’s, the project
is expected to achieve the following to seamlessly integrate with Wilmont’s pharmacy customers:

• DroneTech will manage drone piloting and product delivery. While your existing processes
handle order entry, delivery confirmation, and a mobile app on the DroneTech side, these
need to be customized for Wilmont’s to present a unified front to customers. Eileen
Seymour, the IT point of contact at your firm on the DroneTech information systems side,
will oversee the data interface team collaborating with counterparts at Wilmont’s. Mary
Pearson, Wilmont’s internal IT department Project Manager assigned by CIO James
Connor, will lead the information systems development needed to support the initiative.
Phillip Greenberg, the project manager on Wilmont’s business operations side, will
collaborate with you to coordinate Wilmont’s resources for interfacing with DroneTech’s
flight operations and other management systems that control the drone delivery system.
• Interface with Wilmont’s enhanced online order entry process, enabling customers in the
San Francisco area to express their willingness to have a drone deliver their orders through
online or smartphone entry. Significant restrictions on customer approval for this service
will require a process segment for Wilmont’s management to approve the customer, send
confirmations, etc. Although DroneTech systems already perform these functions,
interfacing your systems with Wilmont’s is necessary to prevent customers from directly
accessing DroneTech’s regular customer websites or mobile applications.
• Interface electronic communications about deliveries for Wilmont’s customers through
email, online channels, and mobile alerts as per customer requests.
