6. Procedure For Applying PY15 / PY15HY

1.0 Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to ensure the detailed control for surface preparation and application
of Pyrolite 15 over steel substrates (primed / unprimed)

2.0 Responsibilities

2.1 The Contractors QC Inspector shall be responsible for final inspection prior to submitting a
request for inspection by Client Representative.

2.2 In case dispute regarding the materials and its application, manufacturer’s recommendation
shall apply

3.0 Access

3.1 Proper access to be provided by the main contractor to prepare the surface and apply Pyrolite
15.

4.0 Environmental Protection

4.1 All works will be carried out in dry and atmospherically correct conditions.

4.2 The working area will be kept clean at all times.

4.3 Spillage of all materials will be cleaned immediately to prevent contamination.

5.0 Surface Preparation

5.1 If the steel is primed, do a cross hatch or an X-cut as per ASTM D 3359 for the adhesion of
the primer to the surface.

5.2 If the steel is not primed, it can either be blasted to have a profile or can be mechanically
prepared (free from mill-scale, loose rust etc.

5.3 If the steel is primed, do a cross hatch or an X-cut as per ASTM D 3359 for the adhesion of
the primer to the surface.

5.4 If the steel is not primed, it can either be blasted to have a profile or can be mechanically
prepared (free from mill-scale, loose rust etc.

6.0 Mixing And Application

1. Following the inspection of the prepared surface, the next step is to mix the materials as follows

2. Check the application conditions, ambient temperature, humidity etc and record it.

3. Use a suitable pump, for e.g. Putzmeiser’s SP 11 for mixing and spraying.

4. Mix one bag of Pyrolite 15 in the mixer, add 30 +/- 4 ltrs of water to the dry powder and start
the mixer. Allow it to mix for 2minutes. Do not allow running for more. Depending on the size
of the mixing chamber/ pot two bags can be added.

5. After mixing the material for 2-3 minutes, drop it to the hopper for spraying.

6. Do not allow the mix material to stand for more than one hour in the hopper (begins to get
hard in time).

7. Apply 8-9mm of key coat on the substrate with the suitable nozzle. Adjust the pressure so that
the over-spray is minimum.

8. Build up the thickness in subsequent coats. Allow enough time between the coats to dry. Do
not apply thick to sag.

9. On the edges and corners, make sure the thickness is correct.

10. All application will be carried out by suitable trained / experienced operatives.

11. The selection of materials, mixing, application and achieved thickness will be overseen and
monitored by the foreman, client QC. Refer to respective technical data sheets for details on
mixing and application.

12. When dry, thickness and film integrity shall be checked by the Inspector

13. The information given in the data sheet is for guidance only. If in doubt consult Carboline for
advice.

14. Repairs on the surface to be done as follows

6.14.1 Clean the damaged area and remove all delaminated materials. Prepare a V cut
wherever possible.

6.14.2 Touch up with primer if required by brush and allow it to cure.

6.14.3 Apply by manually if the area is small and gradually build up the thickness. Allow it to
cure properly. If the damaged area is large, spray application is necessary. Typically
if an area more than 0.25Sq.mtr, spray is advisable.
