Q1: What does the story of the BBC’s failed Digital Media Initiative suggest to you about the importance of carefully
managing not only the project, but the “message” of the project? That is, why is “benefits management” critical for
project success?
After reading the whole case I came to believe that it is crucial to plan carefully the project from the begging till the
closing and to develop a clear vision of the goal by sitting a list of goals to achieve within a timed plan. Moreover,
making sure that these goals are well understood by all team. One of the issues in this case study was a lack of
understanding of exactly what digitizing the BBC’s system would do? And what benefits BBC will gain from this
project? Because the goals weren’t clear enough it was impossible to understand the real benefits of the new
system and when facing a problem there was a person or company to blame.
Q2: Successful project management requires clear organization, careful planning, and good execution. How was the
absence of each of these traits shown in this example?
As mentioned previously in this chapter it is important to have a clear careful well organized groups and teams
within a project. So The BBC Digital Media case provided the best example for these needs. Verity of team such as
contractors and stakeholders. Their roles are to make sure that the entire team members are trying their best to
achieve the desired goal. The missteps and technological failures clarified that BBC has a problem not only on
technologies of the project but also with relationship within its team. Once the problems started the management
failed to deliver the message to public at the same time the new technology showed examples of failure.
