1. Discussion of the Lesson “ Properties of Multiplication”

Concept Note:

Linda has 3 jars of cookies. Each jar contains 12 cookies. How many cookies
does she have?
Multiply 3 jars by 12 cookies per jar to get the number of cookies.
That is,
3 x 12 = 36.
Multiplication has certain important properties that can help you perform the
operation easily.
The different properties are;

 Commutative Property
Changing the order of the factors does not change the product.
Example 1: 3 x 12 = 12 x 3
36 = 36
 Associative Property
Changing the grouping of the factors does not affect the product.
Example 1: (3 x 6) x 2 = 3 x (6 x 2)
18 x 2 = 3 x 12
36 = 36
 Distributive Property
Decomposing one factor as a sum and multiplying each addend to the other
factor and getting the sum of the product does not change the original
product.
Example 1: 3 x 12 = 3 x (10 + 2)
36 = (3 x 10) + (3 x 2)
36 = 30 + 6
36 = 36
