Introductory Message
Welcome to TLE 9 – AFA (Animal Production-Swine)!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Negros Occidental and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TLE 9 – AFA (Animal Production-Swine) Activity Sheet will help you
facilitate the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The TLE 9 – AFA (Animal Production-Swine) Activity Sheet is developed

to help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material
provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being
an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the
agreed schedule.

PREPARATION OF TOOLS AND OUTFITS

I. Learning Competency with Code

1.4 Prepare appropriate tools, materials and outfits in line with job requirements
TLE_AFAAPS9-12ASMFO-Ia-b-1
1.4.1 Identify appropriate tools, equipment, materials and outfits needed in swine
raising by its correct name
1.4.2 Understand the purpose for the tools, equipment, materials and outfits and its
use in the swine industry

II. Background Information for Learners

Simple farm equipment makes work easy for farmers and it’s no different for
pig farmers either.
If you are going to be successful in the piggery farming business, you will need to
have the right tools, equipment, materials and outfits for pig production.
Using proper pig farming tools, equipment, materials, outfits on your farm makes
your daily management operation very easy to do.
The more tools, equipment, materials and outfits you have on your farm, the more
pigs you can keep and the less labour you require.
Some of the equipment is basic and easy to source in the local market. In fact, you
can decide to locally fabricate some equipment depending on the need of the farm.
Having the proper tools, equipment, materials, and outfits to feed and protect pigs
can not only keep them safe and happy, but also give farmers peace of mind from
African Swine Fever (ASF) and COVID19 and that they’ve made good tools and
equipment investments.

Pig Waterer
The pig will drink from a variety of devices. The amount of water needed daily by the
pig depends on numerous influences, including temperature, feedstuffs, stage of
production and health.
Because pigs don’t sweat, access to lots of fresh water is important to help keep
them cool. Swine watering systems can be customized to fit the farmer’s needs.
From drinking cups and bowls, to hose fittings designed to fit the mouths of sows
and piglets.
Pig Feeder
Pigs tend to have a hearty appetite and keeping it satisfied is an important part of
raising animals that produce high quality meat. Automatic feeders are available to
help the pig maintain a healthy diet while maximizing input costs by giving a pre-
determined amount of feed. Troughs can be used in instances where many pigs are
eating at once, helping to create a family atmosphere among them.

Feed Cart
Feeding carts are available to walk the feed to the pigs, while cart covers help keep
the feed protected from insects and other animals.

Heat Lamps
Pigs, like most animals, prefer to be kept warm during cold weather. There are many
heat lamp and brooder options available to keep the pigs warm. Heating pads are
also available to give the pigs a warm place to walk and rest. The heating pads are
also helpful in keeping new piglets safe and preventing crush losses.
Pressure Washers
Pressure washers can be ideal to wash hard to reach areas and clean off hardened
messes.

Personal Protective Equipment

With African Swine Fever (ASF), a highly contagious haemorrhagic viral disease of
pigs, which is responsible for serious economic and production losses in the swine
industry and COVID19 pandemic, the use of PPE is of utmost importance.
Respirators, rubber gloves, rubber boots, coverall and face mask can help keep the
farmer clean and safe from breathing in any airborne sicknesses.

Respirator - is a device designed to protect the wearer from

inhaling hazardous atmospheres, including fumes, vapours,
gases and particulate matter such as dusts and airborne
microorganisms.

Rubber gloves - is a glove made out of natural rubber or

Synthetic rubber. Its primary purpose is protection of
the hands while performing tasks involving chemicals.

Rubber boots - a knee-length waterproof rubber or plastic

boot. They are usually worn when walking on wet or
muddy ground, or to protect the wearer from heavy
showers and puddles.
Coverall - are waterproof or splash proof against
harmful liquid chemicals commonly used in many
industries. These waterproof coveralls also protect
against dry particulates and are made of durable,
but breathable and comfortable materials that allow
ease of movement while working.

Face mask - an item of protective equipment that primarily

guards the airways. A covering that you wear over your
face, for example to prevent yourself from breathing in
germs or from spreading germs and microorganisms.

Crates
When it comes to having the pigs tagged or checked for veterinary purposes, crates
can help keep the animals safe and secure.

Medical equipment
Swine tools and equipment for administering treatment, grooming and medical
procedures or operations are scalpel, castration kits, needle tooth nipper for clipping
the sharp needle teeth of piglets, syringe for administering vaccination or injection.
and wound dressing equipment s and materials.

Scalpel - a small and extremely sharp bladed instrument

used for surgery, castration or anatomical dissection.
Castration kits - is used when removing the testicles
of male piglets.

Needle tooth nipper - was made specifically for clipping

sharp needle teeth of suckling pigs.

Syringe - are used to administer medications to

animals. They are typically plastic and have
measurements down the side to properly measure the
correct dose of supplements, medicine and vaccines.

Foot Bath- is a vital tool of an effective biosecurity program;

footbath is a very simple form of biosecurity that helps
preventing the potential spread of disease.
This measure prevents dangerous microbes that attach to the
sole of shoes or sandals from transferring into the farm.
