Record Data
INTRODUCTION
This module is written in support of the K to 12 Basic Education Program to
ensure attainment of standards expected of you as a learner.
This aims to equip you with essential knowledge on recording data.
This includes the following activities/tasks:
■ Expected Learning Outcome — this lays out the learning outcome that you
are expected to have accomplished at the end of the module.
■ Pre-test — this determines your prior learning on the particular lesson you
are about to take.
■ Discussion of the Lesson —this provides you with the important knowledge,
principles and attitude that will help you meet the expected learning outcome.
■ Learning Activities — these provide you with the application of the
knowledge and principles you have gained from the lesson and enable you to further
enhance your skills as you carry out prescribed tasks.
■ Post-test — this evaluates your overall understanding about the module.
With the different activities provided in this module, may you find this material
engaging and challenging as it develops your critical thinking skills.
What I Need to Know
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

LO 5. Record data

 Update farrowing card following enterprise procedures

 Monitor farrowing schedules with reference to work plan
 Record production performance and reported to immediate authority

Why is it important to record necessary

UPDATE FARROWING CARD

Records should provide two types of information, end data which identifies what is
being achieved, and epidemiological data which gives the detailed components that
have been responsible for this achievement. End data on its own is not of great value in
understanding a problem. There must be the facility to collect, examine and learn from
the components. For example, 3% piglet mortality due to diarrhea is of little value in
helping to decide action without the knowledge of the sows involved, their parity and
the age of the deaths. Within the management system of the farrowing house, detailed
observations and time scales should be recorded on the sow and litter cards. Such
information will help you to understand a problem if it arises. Records identify
achievements that can be assessed against target levels of efficiency.

Monitor farrowing schedule

Due to the genetic improvement seen in the last years, the current sows'
prolificacy has increased considerably. The so-called 'hyperprolific sows' farrow a
high number of piglets, so the monitoring of all the factors that have to do with the
farrowing gains more importance than it already had.

The monitoring of farrowing’s requires a certain degree of experience in order to

know the mechanisms that trigger it, as well as the actions that must be carried out
depending on the situation.

A very simple aid for establishing if the moment to help during a farrowing has come
is this card with the shape of a watch.

This watch has three circles: the blue one represents the hours, the green one the
liveborn piglets, and the inner red circle the stillborn piglets.

In this very simple way we can monitor the situation of the farrowing, so, each time
we monitor the sow we will move the circles that have suffered changes.

If we only move the hours' circle and we do not have to move the liveborn nor the
stillborn piglets' circles, this can be a sign that we have to help the sow. The same
could happen if, when monitoring the sow, we only move the hours' and stillborn
piglets' circles. We will be facing a normal farrowing if when coming back to monitor
the sow we move the hours' and the liveborn piglets' circles. Once the farrowing has
ended we will be able to move away the watch and use it with another sow.

This simple aid helps us to monitor the farrowing and its evolution.

The farrowing is a moment during which we must be as attentive as possible in order

to reduce to the maximum the number of stillborn piglets. This tool can be of great
help to attain our goals.

What is it to ‘keep records’?

To keep records is simply to collect relevant information that can help you to take
good decisions and to keep track of activities, production and important events on a
farm. Records can be about any performance of the animals, economic
development, or any activity of the farmer or veterinarian. It is important to keep
record keeping simple, and to keep records systematic. If records should be of use
for the farmer, than they must be complete (none missing), they should be true
(collected carefully). When record can’t be trusted because they are not complete or
true, time should not be spent on it at all.

The records can:

 Be used in determining profitability of various techniques used at the farm

 Be used to keep your memory on what you did and/or what happened
 Be used in decision making, especially on a strategic level

TVE – ANIMAL PRODUCTION (Swine) 4|Page

 Be used to compare the efficiency of use of inputs, such as land, labour and capital,
for example when implementing a new / alternative system
 Help the farmer / investor in improving the efficiency of farm’s operations

Record production performance

This interactive form is designed to help 4-H'ers document a sow’s farrowing record
and the litter’s weaning record. It includes space to list litter size, farrowing date and
piglet weights. Suggestions for using the card are included. (2 pages, 1985)
