Preparing for All Souls Day

Jose: will you come with us in Balara this
Saturday?

Ramon: I’m afraid I cant. A week from now

is All Souls Day. We will be busy then. We
will attend to the cleaning of

Grandmother’s tomb.

Jose: its only Wednesday today. You have

plenty of time. Haven’t you?

Ramon: we can do the work only during the

weekend. Father has planned the activities.
He expects us to carry out his plan according
to schedule so that by Sunday: we will have
wound up the work. (the students are reading)

Jose: what will you have done by Sunday?

Ramon: angie and I will start weeding the

grasses around the grave on Saturday
morning. In the afternoon, we shall have
weeded all the surroundings. Lito will have
whitewash it before Sunday evening.

Jose: does lito know how to whitewash?

Ramon: he’ll see carding about it. Carding is

an expert at it because he is the son of the
caretaker.

Jose: so what else will you do?

Ramon: we will clean the marble tombstone

so that the epitaph can be read. But before
we do this, we shall have painted it already.

Jose: I see that you’ll be busy indeed.

Ramon: mother and anta will prepare for the

usual family vigil at the cemetery. They will
also shop for the tapers to be lighted on that
special day. They will make wreaths too but
they won’t buy flowers yet. If they do, they
will have withered it before All Souls Day.
Jose: you certainly have a lot of works to do.
Can I be of any help? I won’t join the group
of Balara anymore. I’d rather go with you to
the cemetery.

I’ve put away some white paints. We can

give the image on the tombstone a fresh-coat
of paint.

Ramon: fine! I’ll count on you then.

Jose: I won’t fail you.
