Wheel Loader:

993K (S/N: LWA1-UP; Z9K1-UP)

Introduction
This special instruction provides information that is required to remove the pin joint cartridges with
oversized threads or shallow threads in the puller hole on 992G, 992K, and 993K Wheel Loaders. The
threads of the cartridge could fail at less than the rated load for the service tooling.

Do not perform any procedure in this publication or order any parts until you understand the information
that is contained in this publication.

ReferenceRefer to Special Instruction, REHS2648, "Procedure To Replace Loader Linkage Pins On Wheel
Loaders".

Spring force can cause personal injury or death.

Do not repair until you have read the Operation and Maintenance
Manual.

Procedure
The threads in the end of the cartridge should be inspected with a Go/No-Go gauge before attempting to
remove the cartridge from the machine. The 281-7179 Cartridge As has 1.5-12-2B inch threads. All other
cartridges have 2-12-2B inch threads. Use Go/No-Go gauges which can be traced to the National Institute
of Standards and Technology (N.I.S.T.) or an equivalent national standard to measure the threads. The
threads are oversized if the No-Go end of the gauge can be threaded more than three full turns into the end
of the cartridge. Do not use oversized threads to pull the cartridge.

For the 281-7179 Cartridge As with oversized threads, push a 289-0008 Puller Stud through the center hole
in the cartridge and install a reaction plate on the opposite end in order to pull the cartridge out of the

machine. For a 281-7183 Cartridge As or a 281-7187 Cartridge As with oversized threads, push a 9U-6698
Puller Stud through the center hole in the cartridge and install a reaction plate on the opposite end in order
to pull the cartridge out of the machine.

For the 281-7169 Cartridge As , 314-6764 Cartridge As , and 311-1897 Cartridge As with oversized
threads, install a tool that has been fabricated by the dealer. See Illustration 1. Install the tool onto the
outside end of the cartridge with twelve 8T-0358 Bolts or 8T-4175 Bolts . Thread the 9U-7763 Puller Stud
into the plate in order to pull the cartridge out of the machine.
