Operation of the Swing Drive Gear Section

The swing drive gear section consists of two sets of sun gears, ring gears and planetary gears. The
planetary gears reduce the rotating speed of the swing motor. The swing motor is bolted on the
swing brake housing (6). The swing drive housing (25) is bolted to the upper structure. The teeth
of the swing drive output pinion shaft (27) engage with the swing bearing gear which is located in
the lower structure. Pinion shaft (27) provides motion to the upper structure by rotating around the
swing bearing gear.

The swing drive gear section consists of the following two sections:

• The first section functions as a double reduction of motor speed. The first stage reduction
consists of sun gear (13), planetary gears (16), carrier (17) and ring gear (15). The second
stage reduction consists of sun gear (20), planetary gears (19), carrier (22), and ring gear
(15).

• The second section functions as the drive for the reduced swing motor output. The second
section consists of pinion shaft (27), roller bearings (23), and roller bearing (26) in housing
(25).

The planetary reduction gears reduce the swing speed. The speed is reduced in a ratio of sun gear
tooth numbers to ring gear tooth numbers. Since the sun gear is inside of the ring gear, the swing
drive is more compact than reduction units with external teeth.

The swing motor output shaft is splined to first stage sun gear (13). First stage planetary gears
(16) of first stage carrier (17) mesh with first stage sun gear (13). When first stage sun gear (13)
rotates counterclockwise, first stage planetary gears (16) rotate in a clockwise direction. First stage
planetary gears (16) move counterclockwise around ring gear (15). Ring gear (15) is bolted to
housing (25). First stage carrier (17) rotates counterclockwise.

Splines on the inner circumference of first stage carrier (17) engage with the splines on second
stage sun gear (20). This action causes second stage sun gear (20) to rotate counterclockwise
when the first stage carrier rotates. Second stage planetary gears (19) turn clockwise on the shafts
and second stage planetary gears (19) move in a counterclockwise direction around ring gear (15).
Second stage carrier (22) turns counterclockwise. The splines on the inner circumference of second
stage carrier (22) engage with the splines of pinion shaft (27). When the second stage carrier turns
counterclockwise, pinion shaft (27) rotates counterclockwise.

Pinion shaft (27) engages with bearing gear (28) on the inner circumference of the swing bearing.
As pinion shaft (27) rotates counterclockwise, pinion shaft (27) moves in a clockwise direction
around bearing gear (28). The bearing gear is bolted to the lower structure. This rotation causes
the upper structure to swing to the right (clockwise rotation).
