1. Enthusiasm
Definition: a feeling of energetic interest in a particular subject or activity and
an eagerness to be involved in it.
Example: After the accident he lost his enthusiasm for the sport.
2. Positive
Definition: full of hope and confidence or giving cause for hope and confidence.
Example: On a more positive note, we're seeing signs that the housing market is
picking up.
3. Imaginative
Definition: new, original and clever.
Example: The architects have made imaginative use of glass and transparent
plastic.
4. Emotion
Definition: a strong feeling such as love or anger, or strong feelings in general.
Example: Like a lot of men, he finds it hard to express his emotions.
5. Defective
Definition: something that is defective has a fault in it and does not work
correctly.
Example: I think that theory is defective.
6. Affirmative
Definition: relating to a statement that shows agreement or says "yes".
Example: an affirmative answer/response.
7. Loan
Definition: an amount of money that is borrowed, often from a bank, and has to be
paid back, usually together with an extra amount of money that you have to pay as
a charge for borrowing.
Example: She's trying to get a $50,000 loan to start her own business.
8. Finance
Definition: to provide the money needed for something to happen.
Example: The city council has refused to finance the project.
9. Exhausted
Definition: extremely tired.
Example: By the time they reached the summit they were exhausted.
10. Dizzy
Definition: feeling as if everything is turning around, and that you are not able to
balance and may fall down.
Example: I felt dizzy with excitement as I went up to collect the award.
11. Cast.
Definition: a covering made of plaster of Paris that is put around part of someone's
body, forming a hard case to protect them while a broken bone repair itself.
Example: For example, the pre-operative treatment required that the child should
be in a plaster cast.
12. Sling
Definition: a device for supporting a broken or damaged arm in which the arm is
held in front of the body in a piece of cloth that is tied around the neck.
Example: I had my arm in a sling for six weeks.
13. Containers
Definition: a hollow object, such as a box or a bottle, that can be used for holding
something, especially to carry or store it.
Example: an airtight container
14. Unattended
Definition: not being watched or taken care of.
Example: Please do not leave your luggage unattended.
15. Trails
Definition: a path through a countryside, mountain, or forest area, often made or
used for a particular purpose.
Example: a forest/mountain trail.
16. Dark
Definition: with little or no light.
Example: It was too dark to see much.
17. Virus
Definition: an extremely small piece of organic material that causes disease in
humans, animals, and plants.
Example: Evidence suggested that the AIDS virus was spreading very quickly
among the heterosexual community.
18. Strange
Definition: unusual and unexpected, or difficult to understand.
Example: I had a strange feeling that we'd met before.
19. Technology
Definition: (the study and knowledge of) the practical, especially industrial, use of
scientific discoveries.
Example: What this country needs is a long-term policy for investment in science
and technology.
20. Infinite
Definition: without limits; extremely large or great.
Example: With infinite patience, she explained the complex procedure to us.
21. Weird
Definition: very strange and unusual, unexpected, or not natural.
Example: Her boyfriend's a bit weird but she's nice.
22. Vision
Definition: an idea or mental image of something.
Example: We see in his novels his sinister, almost apocalyptic, vision of the
future.
23. Wild
Definition: uncontrolled, violent, or extreme.
Example: The audience burst into wild applause.
24. Extra
Definition: added to what is normal.
Example: If you need any extra help, just call me.
25. Career
Definition: the job or series of jobs that you do during your working life,
especially if you continue to get better jobs and earn more money.
Example: He's hoping for a career in the police force/as a police officer.
26. Personality
Definition: the type of person you are, shown by the way you behave, feel, and
think.
Example: She has a very war.

Definition: extremely funny and causing a lot of laughter.
Example: He didn't like the film at all - I thought it was hilarious.

Definition: the possibility of something bad happening.
Example: In this business, the risks and the rewards are high.

Definition: known and recognized by many people.
Example: Marie Curie is famous for her contribution to science.
30. Blood pressure
Definition: the pressure of circulating blood against the walls of blood vessels.
Example: The blood pressure of the patient is high.
31. Fatigue
Definition: extreme tiredness
Example: She was suffering from fatigue.
32. Nauseous
Definition: feeling as if you might vomit.
Example: Roller coasters make me feel nauseous.
33. Stuffed-up
Definition: If you are stuffed up, your nose is blocked with mucus, usually
because you have a cold.
Example: He sounds all stuffed up - is he all right?
34. Fever
Definition: a medical condition in which the body temperature is higher than usual
and the heart beats very fast.
Example: He's got a headache and a slight fever.
35. Chills
Definition: a slight fever.
Example: Don't go out with wet hair, you might catch a chill.
36. Muscle aches
Definition: a continuous pain that is unpleasant but not very strong.
Example: As you get older, you have all sorts of aches and pains.
37. Runny nose
Definition: If your nose is runny, it is producing more mucus than usual, usually
because you are ill.
Example: I've got a runny nose.
38. Pull a muscle
Definition: to injure a muscle by stretching it too much.
Example: I pulled a muscle in my back lifting some drawers.
39. Sprain
Definition: to cause an injury to a joint (= a place where two bones are connected)
by a sudden movement.
Example: She sprained her ankle playing squash.
40. Dislocate
Definition: to force a bone suddenly out of its correct position.
Example: She dislocated her knee falling down some steps.
41. Ice
Definition: water that has frozen and become solid, or pieces of this.
Example: The pond was covered in ice all winter.
42. Compression
Definition: the act of pressing something into a smaller space or putting pressure
on it from different sides until it gets smaller.
Example: Tectonic forces caused compression in the earth’s crust.
43. Elevate
Definition: to raise something or lift something up.
Example: The platform was elevated by means of hydraulic legs.
44. Rest
Definition: to (cause someone or something to) stop doing a particular activity or
stop being active for a period of time in order to relax and get back your strength.
Example: The doctor told him that he should rest for a few days.
45. Brace
Definition: something that is used to support or connect things, or to make
something stronger.
Example: He was recently fitted with a brace for his bad back.
46. Crutches
Definition: a stick with a piece that fits under the arm, that you lean on for support
if you have difficulty in walking because of a foot or leg injury.
Example: Martin broke his leg and has been on crutches for the past six weeks.
47. Microbe
Definition: a very small living thing, especially one that causes disease, that can
only be seen with a microscope.
Example: The microbe is often isolated only from patients but not from the water
source.
48. Cell
Definition: the smallest basic unit of a plant or animal.
Example: Looking for the exit: how do malaria parasites escape from red blood
cells?
49. Existence
Definition: the fact of something or someone existing.
Example: Many people question the existence of God.
50. Antiseptic
Definition: a chemical used for preventing infection in an injury, especially by
killing bacteria.
Example: Antiseptic is used to sterilize the skin before giving an injection.
51. Vaccine
Definition: a substance that is put into the body of a person or animal to protect
them from a disease by causing them to produce antibodies (=proteins that fight
diseases).
Example: This vaccine protects against some kinds of the bacteria.
52. Gut
Definition: the long tube in the body of a person or animal, through which food
moves during the process of digesting food.
Example: Meat stays in the gut longer than vegetable matter.
53. Digest
Definition: to change food in your stomach into substances that your body can
use.
Example: I find that I don't digest meat easily.
54. Immune
Definition: protected against a particular disease by particular substances in the
blood.
Example: Most people who've had chickenpox once are immune to it for the rest
of their lives.
55. Bloodstream
Definition: the flow of blood around the body.
Example: The drug works more quickly if it is injected directly into the
bloodstream.
56. Sterile
Definition: (of a living being) unable to produce young, or (of land) unable to
produce plants or crops.
Example: One of the side effects of the drug could be to make men sterile.
57. Cancer
Definition: a serious disease that is caused when cells in the body grow in a way
that is uncontrolled and not normal, killing normal cells and often causing death.
Example: He died of liver cancer.
58. Detect
Definition: to notice something that is partly hidden or not clear, or to discover
something, especially using a special method.
Example: Some sounds cannot be detected by the human ear.
59. Seizure
Definition: the action of taking something by force or with legal authority.
Example: Seizures of illicit drugs have increased by 30 percent this year.
60. Identify
Definition: to recognize someone or something and say or prove who or what that
person or thing is.
Example: Even the smallest baby can identify its mother by her voice.
