Preface
Thank you for your purchase of Halo XB-10/VIS-20 UV/VIS spectrophotometer.
Statement: Both common and difference of XB-10 and VIS-20 UV/VIS
spectrophotometer will be introduced in this service manual.
The service manual has been compiled for reference for operators to allow them
to grasp, diagnose and remedy the spectrophotometer trouble quickly in the event of
XB-10/VIS-20 UV/VIS spectrophotometer.
Before using the instrument, be sure to read through the manual and according to
the operation manual to use it. Correct operation can reduce trouble and slow down
lifetime.
Once XB-10/VIS-20 UV/VIS spectrophotometer is faulty, please stop working,
disconnect the power cable.
Please use this service manual combined with the operation manual.

Use method of the service manual


This service manual involves the principle and the structure of XB10/VIS20, as
well as the diagnoses and adjustment when the instrument is in trouble. It also
includes introduction of general parts.
In this service manual, every primary part has its picture, name and part number.
Please refer to the parts list in Chapter.6 to order spare parts. There is possibility of
change of part number.
This service manual may be revised without notice.

1. Introduce

1.1 Outline

The wavelength range of XB-10 UV/Vis spectrophotometer is from 190nm to


1000nm, and the wavelength range of VIS-20 Vis spectrophotometer is from 320nm
to 1100nm. They are compact, easy to operate, rich function, sensitive and
inexpensive. Operation panel has button and LCD, which can do certain wavelength,
multiple-wavelength and quantitative measurement. And they are automatic,
Lamp source of XB-10 UV/Vis spectrophotometer is xenon lamp, which has
wide spectrum range and good quality instrument. In addition, microprocessor system,
reasonable structure and display screen and button control mode makes spectrogram
show on the screen instantly and print through the printer directly. So XB-10 can do
most kinds of analytical tests with quick, effective, intuitive and humanizing.
XB-10/VIS-20 UV/Vis spectrophotometer is widely used in organic, inorganic,
pharmacy, environment, biochemistry and food. And it is also used in Quality Control
(QC) and Quality Analyze (QA).

1.2 Principle

According to Lambert-Beer's Law, there are three conditions, monochromatic


light, homogeneous medium and non-interaction between light-absorbing substance,
and determination of light-absorbing substance’s concentration can be directly
attributed to absorbance test.

1.3 Structure

1.3.1 Shape

1) XB-10/VIS-20 spectrophotometer is compact, simply operated and powerful.


2) Instrument usage and application can be expanded by replacing optional
accessories. XB-10/VIS-20 spectrophotometer’s accessories are temperature
controlled cell holder, 50uL or 100uL micro-cell holder, flow cell holder, five-cell
holder, rectangular long-path cell holder and autosampler.
3) The instrument is small and circular.

The optical path of XB-10 is the same as VIS-20’s, and the light of the two
spectrophotometers is single beam, only the lamp source is different.
The wavelength range of VIS-20 Spectrophotometer is from 330nm to 1100nm,
and XB-10 Spectrophotometer’s wavelength range is from 190nm to 1000nm. XB-10
has two filters, and VIS-20 has only one filter. As shown in Fig.1-2, in general,
optical path is covered in order to prevent outside interference.

XB-10 UV/Vis spectrophotometer tests UV light, so XB-10 is different from


VIS-20 in some regions.

2.4 Environment Requirement

Good operation environment is to ensure the proper use of the instrument.


A. Worktable is steady and flat.
B. Avoid strong and continuous shock.

C. Avoid direct blow.
D. Free from corrosive substance and toxic gas, and keep air flow.
E. Avoid placing sample on the instrument when it is not under test, and please
put it on the worktable.

2.5 Cautions about Electromagnetic Wave

2.5.1 Electromagnetic wave interference by this instrument to the surroundings

Please do select the connect wire in electric circuit which is specified in the
manual to minimize the interference of electromagnetic wave.
Operation of this instrument may cause electromagnetic interference on the
electronic equipment nearby such as TV Set or radio. If you suspect that this
instrument is responsible for any electromagnetic wave interference, turn off the
power of this instrument to check it by observing the signal received of TV or radio.
Remark: Electromagnetic waves generated by the instrument will not affect
people's normal life, and meets the nation’s standard. Under good operation
environment, you can use the instrument without worries.
If the interference of electromagnetic wave is confirmed, you can try the
following ways to improve.
· Make the troubled equipment such as TV or radio apart from the other site.
· Avoid using same power line.

2.5.2 Electromagnetic wave interference by the surroundings to this instrument

Operation of this instrument in the vicinity of equipment that generate strong


electromagnetic wave may cause poor performance or dysfunction of the instrument.
Please select the connect wire in electric circuit which is specified in the manual
to minimize the interference of electromagnetic wave.
If you suspect that a specific type of large scale equipment is responsible for any
electromagnetic wave interference on this instrument, turn off the power of the
equipment and check the improvement of the instrument’s work state.
If the interference of electromagnetic wave is confirmed, you can try these ways
to improve.
· Change the orientation of equipment.
· Make this instrument apart from the equipment suspected to be the source of
the interference.
· Avoid using the same power line.
If the instrument operator gets his own way when trouble occurs, the user should
be responsible for the damage or error.

3. Optical Path System

Optical path system includes light source, lens, grating, sample cell and detector
board and so on. Optical path accuracy is related with instrument’s performance and
parameters, and only professional person can calibrate optical path system by tools
and equipment.
This manual describes XB-10 and VIS-20 Spectrophotometer’s optical path
system. And we suggest that only professional serviceman can align optical path.

3.1 Basic Optical Path

XB-10 and VIS-20 Spectrophotometer are both single beam spectrophotometer,


their optical paths are same and lamp source are different.

In general, optical path is covered in order to prevent interference.
Refer to Fig.3-2, lamp 1 emits polychromatic light and enters into the lens 2,
then grating 3 changes the polychromatic light into monochromatic light (tested
wavelength). Through the slit on lens 4, light beam enters into sample cell 5 in the
sample compartment and go through the detector board 6. Finally, the photoelectric
converter converts optical signal to electrical signal.
When sample absorbs light, signal will change.

3.2 Spare Parts

3.2.1 Lamp Source ASSY

XB-10 Spectrophotometer’s lamp source assembly includes xenon lamp


assembly (position slot, screw and lamp holder) and xenon lamp cable (plug, soft
magnetic roll and xenon lamp).

VIS-20 Spectrophotometer’s lamp source assembly includes WI lamp (WI lamp,


pressure panel and lamp holder) and WI lamp cable (cable, plug and soft magnetic
roll).

3.2.2 Entrance Lens ASSY

Entrance lens of XB-10 is different from VIS-20’s, but its function is the same as
VIS-20’s. Light crosses the slit and display on the grating.
Entrance lens assembly includes entrance and exit slit, lens, lens holder and slit
holder.

3.2.3 Grating ASSY

Grating assembly includes grating, aperture, control board, sheathing and holder.
Remark: Only professional serviceman can remove the grating assembly.

3.2.4 Exit Lens ASSY

XB-10’s exit lens assembly is different from VIS-20’s. But their functions are
same. Spectrum focuses on grating and cross the cuvette in the sample compartment.
Use filter to ensure light’s monochromaticity. Two filters (yellow one and white
one) are placed in the XB-10 Spectrophotometer to test high wavelength region, and
one black filter is placed in the VIS-20.
Exit lens assembly includes filter, holder, lens and exit slit.

3.2.5 Sample Compartment

Sample compartment is usually called as regular cuvette assembly, and it is used


to place sample. Choose different way to analyze sample.

3.2.6 Photocoupler

The photocoupler is used to detect zero light.


Photocoupler assembly includes photocoupler, screws, photocoupler cable, board,
and plug.

3.3 Detector Board ASSY

Detector board assembly includes lightproof film, detector board, lens and
photodiode.
As Fig.3-2 shown, photodiode converts optical signal to electric signal.
XB-10 spectrophotometer’s wavelength range is not same as VIS-20’s, so the
function of detector board is different. The detector boards of XB-10/VIS-20
spectrophotometer are also different.

4. Electric Circuit System

Electric circuit of this instrument is simple, and easy to maintain.

4.1 Electric circuit

As Fig.4-1 shown, and refer to the Fig.5-11 on the service manual when
maintaining the instrument.

The joint of main control board is for PC connection.


See Fig.4-2 (Wavelength motor is under the grating.), switch power board is
under the main control board, the optical source lamp of XB-10 is xenon lamp and
VIS-20 is WI lamp.
The spectrophotometer’s optical path is simple, so it is easy to maintain.

5. Replacement and Maintenance of Lamp Source ASSY

XB-10 and VIS-20 UV/Vis spectrophotometer’s lamp source is easy to be


replaced according to the manual.

5.1 Replacement of WI lamp

VIS-20 Spectrophotometer
: Switch off the power (OFF), and let the lamp cools down.
: Loose off the screw and remove the cover, as Fig.5-1 shown.

: Loose off the two screws on the cover, as Fig.5-1 (1) shown, and keep the
cover vertically upward, as Fig.5-2 shown.

: Loose off the two screws on the WI lamp holder (as Fig.5-2(2) shown). Hold
the old WI lamp by forefinger and thumb (as Fig.5-3(3) shown) gently pull it up, and
remove it from the lamp holder.
: Check and replace the new WI lamp. The key is that the new WI lamp
filament and pin must be same as the old lamp ones. If there is difference, please
correct to prevent displacement of the optical path.
: When check or replace the new WI lamp, please wear soft gloves or hold the
new WI lamp by soft cloth. Don’t leave the fingerprint on the new WI lamp.
: When installing the new WI lamp, push down the pin in the lamp holder.
: Reverse the removal procedures to install.

Finish the installation and check the optical path.


Inspection method: Switch on the instrument, open the sample compartment,
remove the cuvette and put it on the paper. The left of the instrument emits a light
beam, if the optical path is correct, rectangular light spot will display on the paper.
Vague light spot means the position of new WI lamp is not well assembled and it
needs to be adjusted.

5.2 Replacement of xenon lamp

XB-10 Spectrophotometer’s light source is xenon lamp and it is easy to be


replaced.
The first two steps are as same as the replacement of WI lamp.
: Unplug the cable(Fig.5-4(1)) and loose the two screws (Fig.5-4(2)).

5.3 Clean of sample compartment

If the cuvette is placed in the sample compartment, it is easy to be polluted.


Distilled water is the best solution to clean the sample compartment and 75%
ethanol is used to wipe off serious dirty.
In order to keep the sample compartment dry after wiping, please open it.

5.4 Clean of cover

Please don’t place the chemical reagent or sample on the cover of the instrument.
In case chemical reagent or sample is spilled on the cover, remove the chemical
by a piece of soft cloth or whip firstly, clean the cover with water or mild detergent
and then dry it as soon as possible to avoid corrosion.
▲ Attention:
1. Don’t spill out liquid on the LCD panel and keypad assembly.
2. Please unplug the power cable before cleaning the cover.

5.5 Clean and storage of cuvette

After measurement of the sample, rinse the cell with distilled water thoroughly
and wipe the cell with soft cloth.
Please place the cell in the sealed box and put the desiccant in it when storing the
cell. You also can place the cell in the box filled with distilled water such as beaker,
cover the cap. Please take note that the storage place of the box must be clean.
Clean the transparent side of the cell with Alcohol/Ether in the ratio of 1 to 1 as
required.
Replace the new cuvette if there is nick or stain.

5.6 Clean of lens

Serious dirty and poor environment will contaminate the sample compartment,
which effects photometry accuracy and stability. So clean it if necessary. Before
wiping, clean the hands. As following steps to clean the lens.
Steps
(1) Turn off the instrument and disconnect the power cable.
(2) Open the cover of the sample compartment and remove the cell holder.
(3) Wipe off the dirty with a piece of soft paper or cloth soaked with
Alcohol/Ether (mixed in the ratio of 1 to 1) and dry it.
(4) Install the cell holder.
△ Cautions
(1) When cleaning the lens, it only needs to wipe off the side facing to the
sample compartment. The other side is sealed and it is difficult to be contaminated.
(2) Do not remove the lens or lens assembly to prevent the displacement of
optical path.
(3) Do not leave the fingerprints on the lens.

6. Routine Maintenance and Trouble Shooting

6.1 Routine maintenance

Correct use and maintenance ensures that the instrument works and extends the
lifetime of the instrument.
1) Operate the instrument according to the instruction manual strictly. Adopt
containment to keep the instrument work normally.
2) Compile operation rule and regulate user action.
3) Prohibit the excess liquid sample placed in the cuvette.
4) Know well about function and instruction of auxiliary equipment and keep the
replaced spare parts in a safe place.
5) Wipe the cover by warm water and soft cloth, and do not use alcohol, ether
and acetone. Please use dust cover when the instrument does not work.
6) Check the instrument regularly.

8 . Quality Guarantee

(1)Guarantee Scope (a) Free maintenance to instrument noumenon for errors caused by
fabrication fault.
(b) When maintenance, some substitute may be used and some damaged
parts might be replaced with identical parts instead of on-site service.
(c) Sometimes the same products like computer and printer used in
the instrument are not able to be supplied, because they are
eliminated in the market.
(d) Free maintenance is not provided for deserted maintenance or
those resold instruments and parts without our permission even
during the guarantee time.

(2)Guarantee Period One year from the delivered date.


Notice: Some consumable parts such as Xenon lamp and WI lamp are not
included in the guarantee list.

(3)Non-guarantee The following case cannot be service freely even if it is within

(k)Errors of consumable parts and parts which have limited guarantee time.
(l) Errors of the parts except for the guarantee items recorded in the
instruction manual.
(m) Errors caused by fire, earthquake, typhoon, flood, thunder and
lightning, riot, crime, terrorism, war, radioactive contamination,
hazardous materials and other irresistible reason.
