KKP History

The Kaibigan ng Kalikasan Program (KKP for short) was conceived as an institutionalprogram, aimed at
making the University an environment friendly school.

Through the help of the Saint Mary’s University CHSF Staff, a core group of Administrators,
Faculty, Personnel and students have undergone a training held on the third week of October 2000.

Some 50 members of the USLT Academic Community underwent a two- day seminar-workshop.
Thereafter, a training for all employees, including the security guards was also conducted.

Believing that the students and pupils comprise the greater majority of the Academic Community that
are exposed to the environment, they too, have undergone a similar training. Till then, every Louisian
embraced the program.

On January 10, 2001, the whole Louisian Community witnessed the launching of the program with a
Field Mass and a General Clean and Green Day.

Consequently, KKP Days have been scheduled by different sectors. Through the years, the Louisians have
celebrated 5 KKP anniversaries to date

During the school year 2003-2004, the university likewise saw the birth of the Sanggunian ng mga Mag-
aaral para sa Kalikasan, a group of student leaders whose dream was to make a difference in the life of
their fellow students. They have undergone a four-day Eco-Camp at the Cagayan Economic Zone
Authority, Sta. Ana, Cagayan.

Inspired by this training, they proposed several activities in order to instill environmental consciousness
among the Louisians. One of the highlights of the proposed activities was an environmental dance
drama titled Bin-I which was staged on the occasion of the schools 39th Founding Anniversary.

Likewise in 2003, the school has adopted a “No-Burning Policy” in any part of the school to ensure that
it will be pollution-free for all its clients and the entire academic community.

This was done on top of the long-cherished tradition of declaring the school as a No-Smoking Campus.

In the early part of 2004, it has embarked on a two-way garbage segregation scheme with two big
square trash cans in the key areas of the university. The trash cans are painted blue and green. The
green trash can was for biodegradable wastes and the blue one for non-biodegradable wastes.

On August 8, 2005, on the occasion of the 3rd Anniversary of the Inauguration of the School as a
University, the school has adopted a Theme: USLT@3 and the 4 E’s – Environment, Energy
Conservation, Evangelization, and Education, to be relevant to the needs of the times. Again, the
university has launched another Clean and Green Competition among the departments, in the same way
as the past.
In order for the school to help the LGU in its garbage collection, the university purchased a dump truck
so that those which are no longer useful are thrown directly by the university to the City’s Dumping
Area.

Our realization as a school…

The quest for a clean and green environment cannot be attained overnight. Much more, if the
stakeholders do not own the program. Our environmental program is relatively young, but our initial
activities proved that constant repetition of endeavors for environment become a good reminder for
everyone in the school.

In support to the university-wide KKP, the High School Department has launched several programs to
contribute towards the attainment of a clean, orderly, healthy, safe and friendly Louisian environment.

For the last five years, the following programs have been institutionalized and proved to be successful:

1. Search for Best Classroom of the Month-This is a monthly contest among all classes. This is a
search for best and cleanest classroom.
2. Search for Best KKP area-This is a contest for the best, cleanest and most creative park.
3. Waste Segregation particularly on plastic bottle segregation.

For this year, a new program was launched dub as “Mug-to-Go”.Every Louisian High School mentor and
student brings his/her mug to be used to purchase softdrinks and or water. In this way, the use of
plastics is reduced.
