MASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

INTRODUCTORY RITES

Commentator: Good morning, we are gathered here today to celebrate the Holy
Mass of the Holy Spirit.

We need to ask the help of God’s spirit so that we can learn, grow,
and discover in the coming year. But we also need to remind ourselves
that all the good that we have done and are now capable of doing are,
in very large part, God’s gift to us. So our achievements should lead,
not to our own glorification, but to praise of and gratitude to God.

And, as a people grateful to God for our gifts, we should seek to be

gracious to others. We should treat the struggles, tragedies, and
suffering of others not with indifference, but with compassion and
care.

As we begin the year at this Mass of the Holy Spirit, let us pray that
this year is full of discovery, growth, the building of community, and
many, many good works, but that we never fall to the temptation of
thinking that we alone are the objects of praise for our
accomplishments. Let us pray that we never lose concern for,
compassion for, those who are less fortunate than we are or who
have not accomplished what we accomplish, and that we do all we can
to be agents of resilience and catholic society.

Our mass presider is the Most Reverend Ruperto Cruz Santos,

bishop of the Diocese of Balanga.

Let us all rise and sing the entrance hymn.

ENTRANCE HYMN…

gifts of the Holy Spirit, enlighten our hearts and minds.

PENITENTIAL ACT

Celebrant: Brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves
to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

what I have failed to do. Through my fault, through my fault, through my
most grievous fault. Therefore, I ask the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, all the
Angels and Saints, and you my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING: Acts 2, 1-11

Lector: A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,

they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky
a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,
which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak in different tongues,
as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation

under heaven staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd,
but they were confused
because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
They were astounded, and in amazement they asked,
"Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
Then how does each of us hear them in his native language?
We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites,
inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,
Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia,
Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene,
as well as travelers from Rome,
both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs,
yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues
of the mighty acts of God."

The Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

Bless the LORD, O my soul!

O LORD, my God, you are great indeed!
How manifold are your works, O Lord!
The earth is full of your creatures; (R)
May the glory of the LORD endure forever;
May the LORD be glad in his works!
Pleasing to him be my theme;
I will be glad in the LORD. (R)

If you take away their breath,

they perish and return to their dust.
When you send forth your spirit,
they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. (R)

SECOND READING: 2 Cor 12, 3b-7. 12-13

Lector: A Reading from the Second Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.

No one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;
there are different forms of service but the same Lord;
there are different workings but the same God
who produces all of them in everyone.
To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit
is given for some benefit.

As a body is one, though it has many parts, and all the parts
of the body, though many, are one body,
so also Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons,
and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

The Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

Commentator: Please all rise to honor the Holy Gospel.

ALLELUIA…

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

All: And with your spirit.

Celebrant: A proclamation of the Holy Gospel according to John

All: Glory to you, O Lord!

GOSPEL: Jn 20, 19-23

On the evening of that first day of the week,

when the doors were locked, where the disciples were,
for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst
and said to them, "Peace be with you."
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you."
And when he had said this, he breathed on them
and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained."

The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Commentator: Please be seated.

that true wisdom comes from you alone.
Send your Spirit upon these students, teachers and support staff

God our Almighty Father,

and the work that we do this year.
Open our minds and our hearts
so that together we may be grateful for our gifts and the gifts of others;
generous to become men and women for others;
attentive and discerning in the events of daily life;
compassionate with the needy;
loving towards others;
faith-filled in our beliefs, with hope in the future;
eloquent and truthful in our speech;
learning to find God in all things;
curious to know;
engaged in the world;
committed to change for the better.
May we use the resources of the earth prudently
and set a prophetic example by our conduct,
so that we my employ our knowledge to benefit others
and create one family of all nations
to the greater glory of God.
May Mary, the mother of your Son,
and our mother too,
assist us in all that we do
and make us more like her Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Before He was given up to death, a death he freely accepted, he took the

bread and gave you thanks. He broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and
said: “Take this, all of you, and eat it, this is my body which will be given up
for you.” When supper was ended, he took the cup. Again he gave you
thanks and praise, gave the cup to His disciples, and said: “Take this, all of
you, and drink from it, this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and
everlasting covenant. It will shed for you and for all so that sins may be
forgiven. Do this in memory of me.
