Additional student instructions

2. NO emailed scripts will be accepted.
3. Students are advised to preview submissions (answer scripts) to ensure legibility
and that the correct answer script file has been uploaded.
4. Students are permitted to resubmit their answer scripts should their initial
submission be unsatisfactory.
5. Incorrect file format and uncollated answer scripts will not be considered.
6. Incorrect answer scripts and/or submissions made on unofficial examinations
platforms (including the invigilator cellphone application) will not be marked and no
opportunity will be granted for resubmission.
7. Mark awarded for incomplete submission will be the student’s final mark. No
opportunity for resubmission will be granted.
8. Mark awarded for illegible scanned submission will be the student’s final mark. No
opportunity for resubmission will be granted.
9. Submissions will only be accepted from registered student accounts.
10. Students who have not utilised invigilation or proctoring tools will be subjected to
disciplinary processes.
11. Students suspected of dishonest conduct during the examinations will be
subjected to disciplinary processes. UNISA has a zero tolerance for plagiarism and/or any
other forms of academic dishonesty.
12. Students are provided one hour to submit their answer scripts after the official
examination time. Submissions made after the official examination time will be rejected.

1.2 Draw an illustration of a typical 16 mm diameter steel rod reference peg which is
500mm long and set in a 300 mm diameter by 200 mm deep concrete block. The peg
is standing 30mm above (NGL) natural ground level. (4)

Question 2

2.1 A mining town is to be developed near Kuruman in the Northern Cape (inland region). The
new township will be 500 ha in area, comprising of 20% downtown business district; 10%
neighborhood shops, 30% apartment dwellings, 10% of asphalt paved streets and the
remaining area is occupied by single family residential dwellings. The average slope of the
hillside in Kuruman is mostly soft and moderate. The catchment is 10 km2 in area, is
covered in thin desert bush, and cultivated vineyards on permeable soil. The length of the
longest stream, which is a natural channel, is 10.5 km and the height difference between
the remote point on the watershed and the discharge point is 420 m. Calculate the change
in peak discharge (i.e. before and after the township is built) for 20-year return period storm.
The average rainfall in the region is 200 mm per annum. (Use the lowest of the range of
values given in the appendices to calculate the run-off coefficient C for Urban areas)
